We stayed four nights at the Munroe House. The pictures do not do justice to this beautiful and historic home. The rooms are incredibly spacious (ours included a couch, sitting area and huge dining room table) and despite being close to everything, it was perfectly quiet. Our host, Mark, was amazing. We were staying at two different guest houses during our stay, and needed to drop our bags early, and then leave them for late check out. Mark accommodated every need. There is no breakfast served, but there is a grocery store within a 5-min walk of the house (as well as several excellent cafes), and you're welcome to use the double-sized fridge in the kitchen to store your food and drinks (there is also a bar fridge in the room). Tip: we saved $ by buying breakfast and lunch supplies at the grocery store and storing them in the fridge. You can walk anywhere from here. We hiked to Signal Hill, Quidi Vidi, Water Street, Gower Street, Duckworth Street, the Rooms, the Folk Festival in Bannerman Park and much more from here. Would definitely stay there again.

A lovely refurbished historic home on a quiet residential street, yet minutes walk to St. John's waterfront, shops and restaurants. When you step into this restored home and its guest rooms, you feel like you’ve taken a step back in time!

Guests rooms are beautifully decorated with antique furnishings. You have full house access, including kitchen. Excellent complimentary in room wifi also included in your stay.

Perfect for both business and pleasure travelers to the city.

We found this Guest House and are so happy we did! It is close to the airport and after a long flight from Portland Oregon, we were happy for that! Eric was the host and provided all the needed information before we arrived. We were exhausted but were astonished by the beauty of the house. I wish we had booked more nights for sure! Close in but far enough that there wasn't noise and traffic. We loved it! Don't hesitate to book for your adventure in Newfoundland.

This was a wonderful stay in St John's. Eric was always just a text away and we really loved the location and enjoyed our 4 day stay. The house was beautifully done. I would totally recommend to anyone!

We spent two days at Monroe House after arriving in Newfoundland for a 2 week roadtrip.
Check-in was easy. The house is lovely and has the look and feel of a true heritage property. The rooms are spacious, and well equipped. There 2 large rooms that guests can use to relax and/or eating.
Well located for exploring St Johns and the surrounding area.
The only drawback, was having to go out for breakfast, but there is a decent breakfast restaurant within 100 yards.
Very good value for money.

This beautiful home previously belonged to the Prime Minister of Newfoundland. We were alone in the very large home when we first arrived and were able to take a quick look at each room as we climbed to the third floor. Every room looks well done and beautiful. There is an elevator in the home but I did not realize it was functional until our departure. The chandeliers, staircases, floors, and rooms were all stunning. If you were having a family reunion or a work retreat this home could likely accommodate. The antiques and art work really add to the home. Staff were great, and while I only texted with the host Eric, he seems very personable and responsive.

The kitchen is an industrial/commercial kitchen is likely best for large groups. The jacuzzi indicated in the listing was not functional and I was notified after arriving that it was broken.

The house unfortunately was very very hot. Unbearably hot. Not just warm, but sweating uncomfortable hot. While it has been warm in St. John’s, I looked for a place with air conditioning. There is a portable air conditioner in the room, but it only works for three hours before it beeps, and turns off indicating the water needs to be emptied. This resulted in very interrupted sleep and a room that was always warm. Wifi was out during my entire stay. The wifi was not fixed during my stay and the property was unaware the wifi was not working until I was insistent they check. While there was one other wifi connection available on the main floor that could be used, those areas have no air conditioners. Some investment in an alternate drainage system, or central air, would make the home substantially more enjoyable. I would also recommend opening the house up to catch a breeze or turning the air on prior to a guest’s arrival to avoid being hit by a huge wall of hot air when they arrive. While it’s warmer than normal in St. John’s, a property that advertises air conditioning shouldn’t be using that as an excuse.

The area is great. Walkable to the harbour , signal hill and downtown if you’re ok with a little exercise and the hills that make St. John’s, St. John’s.

We stayed at the Sheraton the prior week. This was priced about 40 dollars per night less however it doesn’t have a gym, pool, view of the harbour, central air, daily housekeeping or breakfast included. Parking was free however; while parking at the Sheraton is nothing short of a gong show and costs $15.00 per day. If the property were full parking would be tight; however with only one other guest during my stay I had no trouble. I really shouldn’t compare the two properties however I could literally see the Sheraton parking lot as my view from the third floor.

There is access to a newer front load washer dryer in the home (shared with stafff who are washing towels etc). There is a sign saying $5.00 per load. There are also pop and bottles of water in the fridge with an hounesty system container for payment of $1.00 for water and $1.50 for pop.

Access to additional towels was not an issue at all and the staff during the day were apologetic about the wifi and checked in to see if we needed anything. Unfortunately they were not able to fix the wifi, tub or lack of central air though.

The house really is beautiful and if they fixed the issue with the how unbearably hot it was, I would possibly return, otherwise next time I’ll likely just go back to a large corporate hotel chain.

We stayed in the Sir William Whitehall room. The room was upstairs and absolutely delightful. We had a jetted bath and a shower with multiple heads. The twin and double bed were very comfortable. The house was extremely clean, beautifully restored, and we were able to view (and use) each room. [dining, kitchen--fully stocked, den with games, and outside]

All were helpful and we needed help with what Budget car rental did! The wine helped also!

You can purchase wine, beer, pop--which is in the refrigerator. There is parking space. You can walk to tourist areas from this residential district.

This is one of our 2 favorite hotels. The only negative is that we did not stay another day to enjoy this lovely house. A must stay.

Not really a boutique hotel, certainly not a B&B, this was an amazingly beautiful place to stay for 3 nights at the end of our 2-week Newfoundland trip. Located just at the edge of downtown St. John's, it is literally across the street from the Commissariat and convenient to coffee shops, restaurants, shopping and the downtown scene.

Our room was on the third floor, and although the spiral staircases were gorgeous, the self-operated elevator was a bonus we appreciated. Comfortable beds, well-appointed bath, lovely lounges in the common areas, and huge communal kitchen available to guests, it would be hard to find fault.

That said, it's not a B&B. You are on your own here - and this was not a problem for us at all. This might more appropriately be an ideal setting for corporate retreats than vacationers, but we found it offered us just what we needed - great location and the comfort of a residential setting.

The room was magnificent. We stayed in the Walter Monroe Suite. Very comfortable and private. Loved all the original art. The location was walking distance to downtown, Quidi Village and the gigantic Dominion Store. Since we had accessibility to a huge kitchen, we sometimes brought food in. We stayed 6 nights and took day trips from St John's. The only negative thing is that there is no staff most of the time so nobody to answer questions. Do you research first.
