Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The first thing that strikes you about the Sheraton in St John's is that you have been transported back to the 80s... and there is nothing wrong with that. I mean, a handwritten chitty for breakfast, who does that? Let's start with breakfast. It was decent. Standard fare, eggs (scrambled) overcooked most days. Nothing to write home about, but no one does breakfast like us Brits, right? Only ate in the hotel twice other than breakfast. The chowder was impressive, as was the calamari.
On to the room. 80s chic (or dated if you prefer). Usual barely adequate lighting (why do hotels think everyone lives in the dark). Large, roomy and with an excellent super large and comfy bed. One day the North American continent will wake up to the benefit of having kettles in rooms, rather than some ridiculously slow coffee percolating device. Whilst the room was made up every day, it wasn't particularly well cleaned, especially the bathroom.
Other facilities of note... a decent gym (though some of the equipment was broken) including a separate weight room and fitness room. The pool and the hot tub were welcome... but why are the saunas in the changing rooms, meaning a couple cannot enjoy together.
But I am picking holes. For the price (<ÂŁ250 a night for a suite with breakfast), the location (near some great restaurants - give Vu and the Battery Cafe a try - and walks), the hospitality (the staff are magnificent), the 80s vibe and the ease of accessibility, including a really good cab rank, this has to be one of the best hotels for a stay in St John's.

Great location. Easy walking distance to restaurants, bars. Five minute drive to tourist attractions such as Quidi Vidi, Signal Hill, etc. We had a room overlooking the harbour and were able to see trawler boats, a Canadian Navy destroyer and an Ocean liner arrive. Room was a good size and well maintained. The only suggestion I would give is it should have a walk-in shower versus having to stand in a tub for a shower. The service was superior.

Our room was clean and comfortable. The front desk staff were very kind and greeted us warmly. The hotel location was an easy walk to the waterfront shops. The hotel seemed short-staffed and was unable to clean up meeting rooms or bring towels to the pool after multiple requests. A nice place to stay, but bring your patience.

This hotel is ideally located just steps from nice cafes and the main downtown district while somehow being separate from any bustle. St. John’s is a very hilly city and this Sheraton is on top of a rise, so heading into the action is a downhill stroll. The rooms are comfortable, though many hotels in Newfoundland only offer rooms with two double beds instead of two queens, including this one, which was the main disappointment. The hotel lives up to Marriott standards, with attentive housekeeping and a great restaurant. Newfie hospitality was on full display, with the staff all being friendly and helpful, especially Ashley at the front desk and Jacquina (not sure if I spelled that right) at the restaurant. This is a good hotel to choose for your stay in St. John’s.

Check in was a disaster. Checked in as part of a group and no one's key cards had been activated. Had to go to reception to have fixed. Second cards also not activated so had to make a third trip to reception. Then only one of the two cards worked. There was a nail sticking out of the wall on which I caught my sleeve. Reported to reception whose reply was "sorry, we'll fix it in the morning" Nothing at all about the hole in my sleeve. Not fixed the next day so reported to reception again. Housekeeping removed used towels but didn't leave fresh ones. Would have called them about it but the phone had no dial tone and was inoperable so down to reception again. Food was fine in the restaurant. Bed was comfortable.

If this platform had half marks this rating would be 4.5 because the rooms need an upgrade. The hotel is very clean and the bed was very comfortable. We had a harbour view which was nice. There was a bit of noise with a group of young people across from our room. I called down and they were there in about 5 minutes. The noisy neighbours were quieted. The front desk staff were very pleasant and professional. Parking is outside and is $15 per day. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

Built in 1982 with rooms and bathrooms furnished about the I would guess. Lobby is fresh and redone, the rooms are not. Old old style bathroom with tub shower and single vanity. Room is small and basic with no safe or mini bar. There is a refrigerator and there are wall outlets so at least you can charge your devices. Bed is comfortable Tv is large and modern. Everything else (design, carpet which is disgusting, drapes, heat/ac, bathroom) is faded and in desperate need of modernization and updating. The window wall ac/heat is ridiculously noisy so hopefully you won't need it or your won't be able to sleep. Walls and doors are sooo thin you can hear everything. Check in was interminably slow at 430am!!! Could not get anyone to answer room service for more than an hour one night so gave up...a big event meant I guess they had no staff to pick up the phone. A very very mediocre hotel. Stay somewhere else.

This was a nice hotel with clean rooms. The hotel staff were incredibly friendly, and accommodating. I am a celiac, and while they are not used to fixing food for celiacs they were very careful. I ate several meals and the food was well prepared, especially the steak. The bar had a lovely late-night atmosphere between locals and tourists. The sunrise from my room was amazing

We arrived after being dropped off at the wrong hotel by the taxi driver. The small walk to the Sheraton at 1:30 AM had us greeted by the most friendliest staff and ensure the registration was seamless and expedited with finesse.
Our room overlooked the city at first. We had to be moved to another room (which was so overly efficiently manipulated!) and it overlooked the harbour.
Both views in the morning greeted you with the warmth of Newfoundland landscape, regardless of the temperature outside. We were in awe.
This hotel is so conveniently located, great walking distance to Water and George St., Signal Hill is a kilometre away.
The staff are amazing, nothing less can be said about them. Will definitely be booking with this hotel the next round!
If a 10 out of 5 rating could be given, this hotel would certainly be granted it in our books!

I would say what makes this hotel are the people who work here. Everyone was just so friendly and nice!
We stayed on the Club Floor and had an amazing view of the harbour. I worked from the hotel room for two days and the work space was excellent. While the bed was comfortable, the room was dated and we hard a difficult time regulating the room temperature. The ventilation from the bathroom also wasn’t the best which lead to some condensation building up in the room. The club lounge was great, however the breakfast offerings got very repetitive after 6 nights. The gym surpassed my expectations and has everything required for a decent workout.
I wouldn’t hesitate staying here again, however I think it is time for a minor refresh of the hotel?
