We stayed in this excellent b & b during our recent stay in St Johns. Audrey, the owner, was so accomodating and helpful - from providing early check in, to wonderful breakfasts and very clean rooms. Every morning of our visit Audrey prepared a different and tasty hot full breakfast. The room was spacious, clean and the en suite bath was excellent. On the 3rd floor there is a patio with an unbelievable view of the harbour and Signal Hill. This b & b is full value for the price in our opinion. The b & b is located within easy (not taking into account the hills) walking distance of all of the major sights, bars and restaurants of St. Johns.

We stayed at Cantrell House several years ago before Audrey took it over. We loved it then and love it now. It’s a beautiful “Jellybean” home in the heart of St.John’s that is immaculate and wonderfully appointed. The rooms are spacious and so comfortable and there is a fridge in each room which is a bonus. There is a balcony and sitting area for guests that overlooks St. John’s Harbour and once you’re there you never want to leave. Audrey is a warm, friendly, knowledgeable host that clearly loves what she does. Breakfasts were delicious and varied and the coffee was just the best. I can’t recommend this B and B enough and look forward to returning. Tracie O’Keefe and Paul McGoveran

My wife and I loved our stay here. Very comfortable room, fantastic breakfast prepared by Audrey, incredible view looking toward the harbour from the 3rd floor balcony. Location was terrific and easy walking distance to The Rooms, the harbour and George St. It's on a fairly busy street but no issues with noise inside the house and parking was easy to find, often right in front of the house. Audrey was wonderful, very welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend a stay here!

Absolute horrible place to book with. I booked over a month in advance, and two days before I was to arrive I recieved a phone call from the owner to say that they were working on the stairway and she couldn't have me stay but booked for me at another B and B. She never asked if this was what I would like, she just stated it. The place she booked me with, did not seem to have very good reviews, so I found accomodations else where, which was next door to the Cantwell House. So it was easy to see the other guests that she took in the entire week that I had booked for, when supposedly she was not able to have guests. Some actually were checking in as I arrived, at the same time I was supposed to check in. I have never been more disgusted in a business's practise than this. Luckily it was for the best as I stayed at a much nicer place, that was pure luxery and everyone there were angels. But I recommend if you wish to stay at Cantwells be prepared that you might be bumped last minute if they can find someone to pay a little extra than they quote you. At least I did not let this one horrible person ruin my first time to one of the nicest places in Canada. I will be back and in a few months with a few other couples and we will definitely not be booking with Mary Cantwell.

I contacted Cantwell House directly and booked two rooms for July 23, 24 2006 and August 8. About a month before arrival I phoned to check how we should check in late at night. I found that they had booked us for June, not July, and there was no availability in July. Accepting that perhaps I could have made a mistake I kept our bookings for August 8, and set about finding another place for the July booking. I was totally stunned when we arrived on the afternoon of August 8 to find that we had been "bumped" because someone else wanted to stay an extra night. They had made arrangements for us to stay at ABBA, which was fine, but I would certainly not book through Cantwell House again. I assumed that they would be especially careful after a "mix-up" at the beginning of the holiday, which in all likelihood was their mistake. It might be a nice place, but having booked there for three nights we never managed to get inside the door!

We found the Cantwell House on the web but phoned to make the reservation. The taxi from the airport is about 10 min. Mary (the owner) was waiting to show us to our charming room, complete with fireplace & a view of the harbour. The common sitting room on the top
floor has free internet & a deck with an even better harbour view.
The property is impeccably clean & tastefully decorated. The breakfasts had lots of variety & were scrumptious. Both the owners & an employee (Heather) were very friendly & helpful with advice or directions to anything in the area. The location was great. We could walk to all the sights. 5 min to the museum etc., about 10 min. to downtown or many other historic buildings. Lots of dining choices nearby. The harbour is only a few blocks away so good for boat tours.
We stayed 4 nights & would love to return. My husband & I are retired
hoteliers so know a great property when we find one. Thumbs up all the way.

This was our second visit to Cantwell House. The hosts, Mary and Louis, couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. They are just the nicest people, and "real" Newfoundlanders. The rooms are lovely, clean as a whistle, with comfortable beds and great bathrooms with luxurious towels, everything you could ever need. The top floor has a great deck with big chairs that looks out over the beautiful St. John's harbour. The dining room is one big table so that guests can meet and exchange experiences, and the breakfast--what can I say? Eggs Benedict! Delicious. Cantwell House is within walking distance of museums, shops, and George Street. This is the best B and B we have ever stayed at. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Much was good about Cantwell House. The location is excellent for travelers wishing to explore St. John's. Our room on the second floor with a distant view of the harbour was comfortable and the en suite bathroom good. Although we rarely used it, there is a nice lounge on the third floor with a smallish deck with a view of the harbour. Communications with the new owner, Audrey, were efficient and pleasant. But reading the previous reviews, I have a feeling that with the change in ownership the real heart of Cantwell House, and the reason it got such rave reviews, has gone--the previous owners. Although Audrey is very pleasant, she is rarely there and most of the hands-on work is done by a really nice but somewhat harried helper. She functions as a manager, not really a hostess. There was no warm presence to greet us when we arrived. B&B owners are usually really house-proud, but this was missing too, with, for example, wilted flowers on the dining table that weren't refreshed in the three days we were there, a casually made bed, store-bought cookies in the front hall, not even ones from a good bakery. Another pleasure usually found in good B&B's are the breakfasts. Our breakfasts were definitely below par, with no sense that a real cook was involved. So would I recommend Cantwell House? Sadly, probably not.

Room Tip: Our en suite room on the second level with a small view of the harbour was probably the best.

We stayed for two nights mid July 08 at this B&B.
good location (we explored the city and signal hill on foot starting from the B&B), very friendly owners!, nice room with a lot of antique.
From all the B&B's we stayed in at new foundland Cantwell house had the nicest breakfast ! (fresh fruit, yoghurt, good egg platters (more variety and better quality than other B&B's).
One disadvantage: breakfast is only ot 8.30.... this was a bit late according to us.

Certainly a B&B to recommend!

Cantwell House is one of the most attractive, well run B&B's we have ever stayed in in 50 plus years of traveling. The rooms are immaculately clean and tastefully furnished. Mary and her husband provide a delicious hot breakfast in their lovely dining room with freshly cut fruit, bacon and eggs, and homemade breads. They provide a warm caring atmosphere that makes a stay at Cantwell House a memorable one.
