We stayed in this excellent b & b during our recent stay in St Johns. Audrey, the owner, was so accomodating and helpful - from providing early check in, to wonderful breakfasts and very clean rooms. Every morning of our visit Audrey prepared a different and tasty hot full breakfast. The room was spacious, clean and the en suite bath was excellent. On the 3rd floor there is a patio with an unbelievable view of the harbour and Signal Hill. This b & b is full value for the price in our opinion. The b & b is located within easy (not taking into account the hills) walking distance of all of the major sights, bars and restaurants of St. Johns.
We stayed 2 nights here in this jellybean row house near downtown St. John’s. Our room was beautiful with coral walls and lovely quilt on the bed. The location is perfect to tour St. John’s but beware the hills to get down to the waterfront! Breakfast was delicious and we had the house to ourselves so sat up on the third floor guest lounge and balcony and enjoyed the views to the harbour. We highly recommend this well kept clean house!
Cantwell House is on the historic side of town, convenient to Gowers St and Duckworth, Signal Hill. Audrey can give you a parking pass to hang in your car, allowing you to park along the street. We always found a parking place. Room #1 has an ensuite bathroom. We were quite happy staying at Cantwell, from which we made excursions to Signal Hill, the Geo Center, Quidividi, Spear Lighthouse, and to various restaurants in along Duckworth and Water streets.
Within walking distance of waterfront, the Rooms, Moo moos ice cream, George St. and a bakery. Room is clean and comfy, there is always a homemade treat available when you come home each afternoon. Breakfast is home cooked and changes every day and is delicious. There is a common room for relaxing in and a third floor little terrace with a view of the harbour entrance. Our room is on main floor, back of the house and nice and quiet. Parking pass included with our stay. Price is reasonable and Audrey is helpful, knowledgeable and a joy to talk with.
I truly can’t say enough about Cantwell House! Our host Audrey was lovely, the room was perfect. The towels were fluffy and the water pressure was perfect. Immaculately clean and historical. And the location was smack in the middle of downtown, close to restaurants, attractions, the water. Slippers waiting for you at the front door 😊 Stay here!
My husband and I stayed at Cantwell House at both the beginning and end of our holiday in Newfoundland (five nights). We loved staying here and absolutely enjoyed getting to know our host Audrey!! Cantwell House is located a few blocks up the hill from the waterfront where you'll find the restaurants and shops of St. John's. There was parking available on the street in front of the house. Both rooms that we had were large and beautifully decorated with comfortable beds and ensuite bathrooms. There was a lounge on the top floor and a little balcony with seating outside overlooking the harbour for the guests to use. The wifi was excellent. In the morning, Audrey served an amazing (and different each day) breakfast plus a beautiful fruit salad along with available cereal, coffee, tea and juice. A wonderful start to the day! Audrey spent time with her guests and offered suggestions on places to visit and eat in St. John's and in the surrounding area. Don't miss Petty Harbour and Cape Spear! Cantwell House was one of our favourite places to stay in our month away and we think you'll agree too!…
Room was extremely comfortable, breakfast was excellent with choices to suit restricted diets..Audrey was a wonderful hostess who shared valuable tips about must see venues in St. Johns..looking forward to our next visit.
Everything about our stay was excellent. The location was very good, the rooms comfortable and the hot breakfast outstanding. We stayed there coming and going and recommend it. The service was fine and of the B and Bs we stayed at in Newfoundland this was as good if not better than any.
Audrey is an excellent and very personable hostess who made us most welcome. Breakfast was very nice and well presented in a charming dining room. Our room was on the second floor at the back of the house quite quiet on a very busy street. There is a lovely common room on third floor with access to outdoor deck and spectacular view of the harbour over the rooftops of nearby buildings.
I've stayed at Cantwell house on four different occasions and been in several different rooms, and I've enjoyed my stay every time! Best of all is the view from the balcony and shared sitting room on the third floor; you can't find a better view of the harbor anywhere in town! So, if you catch a day with bad weather, you can spend it happily reading one of the books available and looking out over the harbor! The beds are comfortable and the rooms nicely appointed. The third floor has a shared bathroom, but that's worth it to me because of the proximity to the view. Rooms facing Queen's road are slightly noisier at night if there is foot or street traffic and rear facing rooms are quieter, but neither is really noisy. There is no air conditioning if you happen to be there during some of their rare hot days, but the owner provides fans which make it all manageable. The location is so convenient; it's within walking distance of The Rooms and downtown and the harbor. With your key to the front hallway and your room, going and coming is easy and convenient. The closest restaurant is the Bagel Cafe, which--despite it's name--is an excellent full-fledged restaurant. The breakfast is freshly made and fine, although not as hearty the last time I was there as it has been before.…
