Detailed Reviews

I traveled early in September to Yellow Dog Lodge, located between Graham Lake and Duncan Lake in Canda’s NW Territory, 20 minutes by float plane from Yellowknife, for two reasons. To photograph the Auroa Borealis, astrophotography being a new interest of mine, and to fish, a passion of my youth that I hadn’t returned to for 60 years.
Check and Check
I got some wonderful photos of the Auroa Borealis as it burst forth over Graham Lake one evening, and I got fish…I got fish....a Northen Pike and six Lake Trout, each decent size. One of my companions pulled in a 35-pound pike!
There are few places in North America where Aurora viewing is better or the fish more plentiful Or, for that matter, the wilderness more pristine
However, regardless of how rewarding these experiences were, in some ways they were not the highlights. I picked Yellow Dog Lodge because it was likely that I would get the photos and the fish, what I didn’t expect was the owner, Gorden “Gord” Gin.
Gord made my stay one of the most outstanding travel experiences I have had.
Gord is one of those calm, personable guys most anyone would want as a friend. He’s a fishing guide extraordinaire but what mattered nearly as much were the evenings around one of the Lodge’s word-burning stoves. Gord’s knowledge is widespread and thoughtful. He’s a great conversationalist, especially regarding Canada’s history and the Northern Woods. He’s traveled widely and enjoys sharing time with his guests. In short, the perfect host for a wilderness lodge.
Well, maybe I’m giving Gord too much credit. There was also Joey….a three-legged rescue dog who is Gord’s constant companion. They make quite a team. Joey has more heart than most and is a damn good fisherman too boot.
One of my two companions called the trip a ‘once in a lifetime experience.” Because of Gord (and Joey), I hope it will become for me a twice in a lifetime experience.

Beautiful location in Canadian Shield country north of Yellowknife. The lodge is located on a granite-sided passage connecting two lakes, both with super clear water and rocky shores. The lodge is extremely well equipped and comfortable. I had great fishing success (grayling, pike, and lake trout) despite it being the slow fishing season. There are also some great hiking trails around and opportunities for canoeing, kayaking etc. Manager is friendly and knowledgeable, and the guide I had was outstanding. I highly recommend Yellow Dog.

This will be the 4th trip to the lodge for us. We keep going back to the same place, Yellow Dog Lodge.
The facility, the staff and the atmosphere are spectacular. Oh and the fishing is second to none.

Great daily meals, remarkable trips out on the lakes, fishing adventures and the most comfortable lodge building ever. This was truly an amazing experience that started with a short float plane ride out of Yellowknife. As city kids, Gord (the owner) went out of his way to show us the best fishing spots, scope out the wildlife and even spot a bear or two ( at a distance, happily). You'll spend no time in the room, as you'll be too busy enjoying the lodge or eating. Worth every cent of the cost of a trip from Toronto. Campfires, a hot tub, even early Northern Lights ( if you ask, he'll wake you up for them). I just got home, and I wantto go back already.

Third time visitor...first time reviewer (sorry Gord).
First time I stayed in the lodge, the next two times I was in a cabin. The beds are extremely comfortable with a nice heavy duvet to keep you warm (the cabin also has a fireplace should you go at a chilly time of year...which I didn't).
The lodge is between Duncan Lake and Graham Lake which makes for breathtaking views...expecially the sunsets!
Gord, Aaron, Alicia, and Pat are knowledgeable (the fishing is great and the food is delicious) and are very thoughtful.
Thanks for an unforgettable time! Hope to see you next year!

From the friendly, down-to-earth staff to the knowledgable and seasoned fishing guides, Yellow Dog Lodge is a beautifully-maintained slice of heaven where the staff's number one priority is the guest.
You will feel welcomed from the moment you land until it's time for you to leave and head back to reality. Professionalism and courtesy is number 1 at Yellow Dog and you will be shocked at how quickly your time will pass here, so make sure you enjoy it.
The lodge has a full-time chef who is an amazing cook, especially when it comes to homemade baked goods and soups to warm you up after a cold day out on the water. I promise you will not go hungry!
Speaking of the water, the fishing here is beyond exciting - the trout and pike that inhabit the two lakes are the biggest I've ever seen, and in two days, my family and I hooked about 20 fish (we are by no means experienced fishermen), so that should tell you something about how plentiful the fish here are. Gord, who is the owner and one of the fishing guides, and Aaron, the other full-time guide, take it upon themselves to take you to all the areas of the lakes where the fish are typically abundant, and they genuinely care that you catch a fish; it was so nice to see how invested they were in ensuring our experience out on the water was an amazing one.
Lastly, on our last night up, we were able to see the Northern Lights which, for my family and me, is an experience we will never forget.
Thank you to Gord, Aaron, Frankie, and Alicia for a wonderful weekend. We won't ever forget it!

I visited the lodge this summer on a work retreat with 5 other colleagues. No cell reception meant we could all getaway from work. ( internet was available) Gord offered a friendly welcome and made sure all guests felt at home. Heddy had homecooked meals for us 3 times a day and our Prime Rib feast on friday out on the deck was memorable. None of us were fisherman but Gord still helped us out, got us geared up as we went out cruising in the boats. We ended up all catching a nice sized fish. I would highly recomend this property for fishing or simply relaxing.

If you come from Australia in summer and land at Yellow Dog Lodge in the middle of winter, you are in for one great experience. The Lodge is predominantly a fishing lodge which usually open for the summer months and shoulder season into winter.
Gord is the hard working laid back owner who along with his brilliant staff will ensure your stay runs smoothly and all aspects are organised. We arrived in the coldest snap for 50 years where ambient temperature fell to -39 degrees celcius, not counting any wind chill factor.
Gord and the staff had landed 2 days prior to stoke the fires, defrost all the lodges and stock up food and drinks. Over the next three days we ate like kings, played puzzles, snowmobiled on the frozen lake, caught a couple of fish from ice holes drilled in the ice just out the front, went for walks, saw an arctic fox, spotted the aurora every night bar one and were treated to a Super New moon, fireworks and a spectacular aurora on New years Eve.
The best thing about the Lodge is the people there, sincere down to earth friendly people who love the Wilderness and you get the sense they would do it all for free if they had to. This is not a five star luxury hotel, in the middle of winter the toilets dont flow and you need to get up at night every 3 hours to put a log or two on your fire in your tiny warm lodge. But if you come with the right attitude and a sense of adventure you will be guaranteed the trip of a lifetime. Even getting there is sensational flying in on a single prop tin can Beaver aircraft. So cool!!
Just do it.

Another fabulous adventure at Yellow Dog again. It just doesn't ever disappoint. This is a place that deserves to be put on your bucket list.
I have now made this trip 6 years in a row, and we already have plans for next year.
If your not a fisherman and want some R and R then a late August trip with the Northern lights is pretty cool also
Thank you again Gord and your super accommodating staff
