The Bailey House is beautifully decorated and ideally located in Annapolis Royal. Although the website claims they are following health protocol this is not the case. The host never wore a mask and planned to seat all the guests at the same table for breakfast. When we mentioned we were uncomfortable with this, the host, Susan, became very rude and aggressive. Although she did concede and move us to another table at this point the damage was done. So disappointing that we left knowing we would not recommend this spot to our friends.

Thank you for your comments Seamus and Theresa. We generally make it a practice to not respond to guest reviews. However, we believe you have not painted an entirely accurate picture in your above comments. When you arrived at the Bailey House, we clearly pointed out that there were only two other couples in the house and upon showing you the dining room at that time, pointed out that we would be serving breakfast to all six of you at 8:30 am the next morning. Not long after that, you walked around the dining room, commenting on the art, and at that time, for the second time within an hour of checking in, would have seen the table, set for six people. 8:25 am the next morning was not the time to tell management that you “do not know these people and would not be comfortable sitting with them”. You can imagine our surprise and the awkwardness you caused our other (repeat) guests as we scrambled to reset the dining room table and to make up a separate table, in a private room for you. Tourism has been hit particularly hard since the late winter of 2020. We endeavour to do our best to make people comfortable with routine, consistent, and added cleaning protocols. Additionally, the Bailey House has made a deliberate decision - though it is against our own business interest - to limit the number of guests in the house so that everyone is as at ease as possible. This means that we are actually turning people away and not operating at capacity! We also have ensured that the staff and Innkeeper at the Bailey House are all double vaccinated. Part of the charm of staying in a guest house, is the opportunity to meet people one may not have the chance to otherwise. Needless to say, the other guests were made to feel very awkward with your stance and were embarrassed for the Innkeeper at having to adjust the table arrangements. However, the four guests soon found themselves having a wonderful and lively breakfast in the company of each other in the dining room. All these young travelers, the staff and Innkeeper, had taken the early opportunity to be double vaccinated. You two were the only ones who were not. Perhaps once you are, you too will enjoy the kind of visit most guests have and love at the Bailey House.

Hope to be back in glorious Annapolis Royal once restrictions are lifted. Keeping in touch with postings by Nova Scotia Tourism, Annapolis Board of Trade and The Bailey House. Oh, for a scenic down the coast to Digby, the warmth of everyone in Annapolis and the great welcome and superb breakfasts at The Bailey House. Roll on with freedom to travel again, hopefully later this year!!

Suzan has a lovely home but she was not very welcoming to us. The worst example was on the second morning, when we came down for breakfast. She announced that we would be in the sunroom at a small table with another couple. She created a story that we had agreed to this the previous day which was a complete fabrication and she may have been trying to save face with other guests. Given COVID protocols in effect in the province, we indicated we were not comfortable with that and asked if we could have our breakfast in the parlour. When she said "no" because it would be difficult to balance on our laps, I suggested that we could leave and get breakfast elsewhere. She then agreed we could use the parlour but she was flustered as she set us up in the other room and even threw the cutlery down with a clatter on the coffee table and provided poor service. We were willing to adjust but we did not expect to be subjected to derision and microaggressions from our host. We would have had a much better start to our day somewhere else. We believe she was trying to squeeze too many of us in and wanted to disregard our safety and comfort.

Going to Bailey house each year has started becoming a tradition and one I look forward. Susan is always so incredible, not to mention the very delicious breakfast she provides. The carriage house out back is great for families or couples but the rooms inside the house are definitely not to be over looked.

We had booked 2 nights while looking at purchasing a home in the area. Now covid rules state you must wear a mask indoors. But Suzan NEVER wore a mask, not even when cooking or serving. We arrived and really could not figure out where to park. We were informed by Suzan we were in her neighbours' parking. Ok we move to the street, only to be told we should move the car over more, okay. We move it over, again. The home is stunningly decorated. But the welcome was COLD. Thought we were in the wrong spot. There is a resident dog, thankfully we love dogs but it was not disclosed on booking. So take note. We were directed to our room which was large, and beautiful. The feather bed and blankets was so comfy. The toiletries were much appreciated. The room was very warm, when we noticed the old radiators but no thermostat in the room. Even our 125 year old home has been updated with zones for our cast iron rads. During the night I guess Suzan turns down the heat as the room was freezing. Sound really travels here. We were very conscious of this and felt odd hearing her on a phone call. No television, okay we can make due with tablet, but the wifi was non existent unless I stood at the door. Buy a wifi range booster! Suzan helped us by making reservations at a restaurant nearby. But man it is odd to be right there whenever you enter the house. When you come down the stairs! There she is! Breakfast was a highlight, Suzan knows how to cook. She sat with us and chatted. But we constantly felt looked down upon by her curt responses and lack of conversation skills. Suzan is trying to sell the house, I wish her well, and hopefully whoever takes it over will not be tarnished with Suzan's lack of personality. She should be back of house, and hire a friendly person who likes people for front of house.
