We had a wonderful time this past weekend in Annapolis Royal staying at the Bailey House Bed & Breakfast. The hosts, Suzan and Lucy made us feel welcome. Lucy would greet us with her tail wagging each morning and Suzan is a wealth of information about anything you need to know about Annapolis Royal. Ask her where the best places to eat are, and she’ll make recommendations that won’t disappoint you. However, my favorite place to eat and which I enjoyed the most was the 5 Star Breakfasts that Suzan made for us each morning.

The house built in 1770 has been extensively renovated to keep the original charm and character. However, you would have difficulty finding a more updated and modern B&B. We stayed in the John Easson Room that had a fully modern bathroom that featured a walk-in fixed glass screen shower and fixtures, very impressive.

Located within walking distance to the downtown shops, restaurants and Fort Anne.

We stayed for two nights here and already look forward to another visit. The owner is extremely pleasant and helpful. The room we stayed in is beautiful with a wonderful view. The breakfasts we had were five star, she even changed the plates and table setting for each day. It is easy to find, parking is convenient and the whole setting is exactly what we were hoping for. Lucy the dog is a dream dog, we want to get one just like her. I can’t say enough about this B&B

This B&B has classic rooms, is tastefully and artistically decorated throughout and is meticulously maintained.

The morning breakfasts featured cups of fresh fruit, homemade baking, juice, omelettes and tea or coffee.

It is the only B&B in Annapolis Royal bordering on the water.

Suzan, the owner/operator is a perfectionist.

She helps with restaurant recommendations and reservations and does everything she can to ensure that her guests enjoy their stay in the Annapolis area.

Well worth considering if you are staying in Annapolis.

Thank you Chris and Francois for your stay at the Bailey House. And ... this is a fabulous picture of my Lucy-Belle "lying in wait" at the front door. But ... it makes it look like she is in prison!!! Soooooooo very cute. Thank you for that and for all your kind words. Travel safely and enjoy the rest of your time in Nova Scotia.

Suzan has a lovely home but she was not very welcoming to us. The worst example was on the second morning, when we came down for breakfast. She announced that we would be in the sunroom at a small table with another couple. She created a story that we had agreed to this the previous day which was a complete fabrication and she may have been trying to save face with other guests. Given COVID protocols in effect in the province, we indicated we were not comfortable with that and asked if we could have our breakfast in the parlour. When she said "no" because it would be difficult to balance on our laps, I suggested that we could leave and get breakfast elsewhere. She then agreed we could use the parlour but she was flustered as she set us up in the other room and even threw the cutlery down with a clatter on the coffee table and provided poor service. We were willing to adjust but we did not expect to be subjected to derision and microaggressions from our host. We would have had a much better start to our day somewhere else. We believe she was trying to squeeze too many of us in and wanted to disregard our safety and comfort.

This is a five star accommodation. We were greeted by the friendly, hospitable proprietor, Suzan and the sweet scent of cake cooking. The rooms are beautifully appointed with decor suited to the historic property. The view of the river from the room was stunning. There were long stem roses and chocolate to greet us! Suzan has provided a garden with colourful Adirondack chairs across from the house to sit and view the river or drink morning coffee. The breakfast, oh the breakfast! The table was laid and a piece of rhubarb coffee cake awaited as well as a parfait dish with blueberries and a dollop of yogurt.then cam the croissant with home made Seville marmalade and blueberry jam. Finally came baked eggs and sausages. The meal was enough to keep us for most of the day. ...generous and delicious and stylish. I highly recommend the Bailey House! , it is really something special

This is a beautiful, well maintained historic building. We had a large room with water view. Breakfast was very good and a space to store our bikes was provided. The property is exceptionally well maintained and the landscaping was particularly nice even in the late fall past it's prime season.

My husband and I spent two perfect days at Bailey House in August. It was utterly perfect. There were five things we loved most: 1) Susan was an awesome, incredibly kind host and made huge effort to be sure we were welcome and had what we needed; 2) the B and B is utterly beautiful, and our room was gorgeous, down to the last detail; 3) the breakfast included with our room was scrumptious, totally delicious; 4) the location couldn't have been better, right near downtown Annapolis Royal; 5) the view from our room of the water was fantastic, simply lovely. We would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat.

Also, reservations through the B and B's own website work super well. Susan emailed me back in no time at all answering my questions. No need at all to go through a booking group.

I never got to stay here. I had a reservation for months and then just 3 weeks before my night, the management emailed me to cancel my reservation without an explanation. Since it is off season, it is extremely difficult to find another accommodation in this town on this short notice. Unsatisfactory! If you rely on a room in Annapolis Royal on a specific night, I would not take the chance with this place.

Thanks for the opportunity to respond to you Christina. As you well know from the email we sent you on March 6 - a full 4, NOT 3 weeks - before your scheduled stay at the Bailey House, we were very sad to have to cancel your booking. We apologized twice for the unavoidable inconvenience. What is so very misleading in your “review” is that we did in fact, suggest four other accommodations in Annapolis that are open at this time of year for you to contact. We also provided their websites and phone numbers to make it easy for you. We find it vexing that you would choose this forum to air your grievance when a phone call to us directly may have assuaged your frustration. We hope you enjoy your stay in Annapolis Royal.

The Bailey House is beautifully decorated and ideally located in Annapolis Royal. Although the website claims they are following health protocol this is not the case. The host never wore a mask and planned to seat all the guests at the same table for breakfast. When we mentioned we were uncomfortable with this, the host, Susan, became very rude and aggressive. Although she did concede and move us to another table at this point the damage was done. So disappointing that we left knowing we would not recommend this spot to our friends.

Thank you for your comments Seamus and Theresa. We generally make it a practice to not respond to guest reviews. However, we believe you have not painted an entirely accurate picture in your above comments. When you arrived at the Bailey House, we clearly pointed out that there were only two other couples in the house and upon showing you the dining room at that time, pointed out that we would be serving breakfast to all six of you at 8:30 am the next morning. Not long after that, you walked around the dining room, commenting on the art, and at that time, for the second time within an hour of checking in, would have seen the table, set for six people. 8:25 am the next morning was not the time to tell management that you “do not know these people and would not be comfortable sitting with them”. You can imagine our surprise and the awkwardness you caused our other (repeat) guests as we scrambled to reset the dining room table and to make up a separate table, in a private room for you. Tourism has been hit particularly hard since the late winter of 2020. We endeavour to do our best to make people comfortable with routine, consistent, and added cleaning protocols. Additionally, the Bailey House has made a deliberate decision - though it is against our own business interest - to limit the number of guests in the house so that everyone is as at ease as possible. This means that we are actually turning people away and not operating at capacity! We also have ensured that the staff and Innkeeper at the Bailey House are all double vaccinated. Part of the charm of staying in a guest house, is the opportunity to meet people one may not have the chance to otherwise. Needless to say, the other guests were made to feel very awkward with your stance and were embarrassed for the Innkeeper at having to adjust the table arrangements. However, the four guests soon found themselves having a wonderful and lively breakfast in the company of each other in the dining room. All these young travelers, the staff and Innkeeper, had taken the early opportunity to be double vaccinated. You two were the only ones who were not. Perhaps once you are, you too will enjoy the kind of visit most guests have and love at the Bailey House.

Our two night stay at The Bailey House was fabulous. Suzi couldn’t have been more welcoming. Even though we arrived quite early she greeted us warmly. You can’t miss the many pieces of whimsical art, often done by local artists. We were moved to the Joseph Totten room with a water view. It was very large; even with a king size bed there was room for two chairs by the windows, still leaving plenty of moving around space. Personally I loved the walk-in shower in the en suite bathroom; no climbing into a tub to have a shower.

Other people have mentioned the food. Oh! The food! It was all so delicious and filling, set on gorgeous dishes in a beautiful period dining room. Suzi explained each dish, pointing out the local produce and jams. The breakfast set us up for a day of sightseeing.

The Bailey House is in a great location in Annapolis Royal. It is right along the water, within walking distance of art galleries, museums, shops, and restaurants. When looking for accommodation here you can’t do better than The Bailey House - warm hospitality, beautiful bedrooms with comfy beds, whimsical artwork, and fabulous food.

Do you have special rates for single travellers ?
Answer from Baileyhouse1
Annapolis Royal, Canada2 contributions
Good morning … Thank you for thinking of the Bailey House … the only guest house in Annapolis Royal on the water! My best rate is $140.00 (plus 15% tax). The John Easson Room is decorated with solid wood Canadiana reproductions in black. The elegant traditional pencil poster queen-sized bed, bachelor’s bureau, bed-side chests and blanket trunk are striking against the rich cabernet toned walls. A plush round wool carpet underfoot does not detract from the original painted pine plank flooring in this historic house. A feather bed, down pillows and duvet, and high quality luxurious linens add to your comfort. The new three piece private ensuite washroom is the most recently added bathroom in the house. It has a beautiful stone floor and large walk-in mosaic tiled shower. The new appliances are in keeping with the historic nature of the room while ensuring all modern comforts. Relax in an inviting, chair appropriately situated to give you lovely views of the English gardens. The rate of $140.00 (plus 15% tax) per room, per night, includes on-site parking as well as a delicious, hardy breakfast. If this accommodation suits, please call the number below or email to confirm with your name, address, phone number and an American Express, MasterCard or Visa to hold the reservation. I look forward to hearing from you shortly and indeed to hosting you at the historic Bailey House. My regards … Suzan
