The Royal Hotel provides 9 interestingly unique suites, each depicting a rustic feel by allowing for the natural beauty of time to shine by sharing its story. The Royal Hotel is a historic landmark. We’ve been here since 1895. This makes us the oldest established business at the same location on all of Cape Breton Island. Built as the Royal Hotel, this remarkable building has always kept its original purpose. By staying at the Royal Hotel, you will be immersed into a distinctive reality, quite similar to entering the world of the old 1900’s. The grand lobby is always warm and inviting with its beautiful fireplace, and a massive staircase will lead you to the second and third floors. The Royal Hotel is located at the heart of downtown Sydney, Nova Scotia, nested around restaurants, shops, museums and theaters. Two minutes down the boardwalk along the harbor will bring you to the cruise ship pavilion and site of the world’s largest fiddle. Come for a stay and take part of our Royal family, for we are a very personalized hotel, and together we forge memories, and create history. This hotel is very nice and well kept. Lots of interesting old items to look at and admire . The owner I will echo others comments in that she was quite friendly at times and other times offensive and angry. I felt like we were intruding in her home and would not stay there again due to the proprietors manner.

I’ve been travelling around Canada for 3 months and this was definitely the worst stay. Every hostel I stayed at was so much better than this hotel and it’s half the price. I can’t say anything good about this hotel unfortunately. The window in my room was broken, I couldn’t open it at all. The bed was a little itchy and the breakfast was some muffins packed in cling film from the supermarket. The whole hotel smelled somehow strange, I don’t really know, where it came from. But that wasn’t the worst. The owner was acting overly friendly during my stay, which I already thought was very strange. When I left the hotel, I left behind my raincoat unfortunately. The owner told me, she found it and will leave it in a bag with my name on it. It was a pretty expensive one, that’s why I was very glad she found it. I paid some extra money to get to Sydney again. As soon as I arrived there, she was very unfriendly and impolite towards me and told me, my friend already took it. I was to confused at the time so just went back. I wrote her an email later, telling her that I am a solo traveler from Germany so I don’t know anyone in Canada. Each time, she told me something else, when she wrote me back. First, it was my friend, who took it. Then it was a stranger who mistook it for her raincoat, which shouldn’t be possible cause she wrote my name on the back. Then it was the friend of the other girl who took it. If I were you, I wouldn’t trust this hotel to much. It can always happen that you leave something worthy behind by mistake and this person probably won’t give it back to you…

This hotel has a bedbug infestation! We stayed here one night in August 2023 and have regretted it everyday since. During the morning prior to check-out, we found a bedbug in the bed. We caught it and brought it downstairs to alert the front desk. The staff told us they'd tell the owner and then get in touch with us. We never heard from anyone. This severely impacted our trip in the area in many ways. I received about 20 bites from the one night at the hotel. They were itchy and uncomfortable. Additionally, we had to invest significant time away from sightseeing and relaxing to attempt to treat our belongings. This was done at a financial cost to us. When we contacted the owner of the hotel regarding our experience, we got a terrible response. The owner accused us of bringing bedbugs in ourselves from another hotel even though we told them that it was the first hotel we'd stayed at and that it's clear from the other reviews there is an infestation at the Royal Hotel. We were asked to produce receipts and proof of stay but then told that the Royal Hotel doesn't provide refunds so that was a waste of time on my part. It's the clear the owner knows there is an infestation of bedbugs, is refusing to treat it and continuing to book guests into the hotel knowing this.

A beautiful, clean and historic hotel in a great location, but we left after two nights (we'd booked three) due to Bedbugs! After finding bites on my body, we searched the bed and found 4 nymphs and 1 adult. I'm allergic to the bites. Not a good experience at all.

We liked it there, it was kind of like staying at grandma's house. The beds were comfortable, we had a huge bathroom... it was a bit noisy (owner's dog barks a lot, street noises), but overall, a great experience. The owner/staff was very nice! As for breakfast... not great! The coffee was not drinkable and there was essentially just fruits to eat. But we just ate breakfast at a restaurant nearby!

We showed up for check in after 7pm. It definitely felt like they forgot about us and they seemed confused when we showed up despite having a reservation. After paying we were escorted to the room we would be staying in. Through a curtain, past a dining area and into a front bedroom slightly larger than the bed itself. The bathroom was back across the dining area. We sometimes opt to stay in a hostel, and in those instances a shared bathroom can be expected. This was a surprise. There wasn’t a lock on our bedroom door, but there was a hook lock on a secondary door that we could secure once inside. We could then leave through a separate entrance. A weird set up for sure and one that left us hoping there would be no accidental intruders if one of us went to the washroom in the night and unhooked the door. The bed was comfortable, but if you like a dark room, the bright porch light and street lights shining through the sheer curtains may be a problem. I woke up many times in the night feeling blinded. Sleeping past 6:30 was also out of the question because of the daylight. Everyone seemed nice, the lobby was pretty with all the plants and the bed was comfortable. On the 2nd day we had soap in the bathroom too so that was a bonus. Over all it reminded me of staying in the house of a granny who is too old to keep it maintained (holes in the walls and in our door). We won’t be back but we have a good story now and will probably ask to see the room before payment in the future. (We are pretty casual humans too… good with camping, cabins, hostels etc but when we pay for a hotel we expect certain things)

After waiting in the lobby with a barking dog a women finally came half way down the stairs to tell us she didn’t have her rooms we reserved. She offered us other rooms but the doors were broken. Then told us there was a bed bug infestation. We left. Why the hotel is still open is beyond me. What a joke. We felt we dogged a bullet not staying!

Was told that only "vip guests" can have visitors so I was not allowed to visit my boyfriend who was staying here for a MONTH. (I visited only twice before being told this) Woke up to someone smoking crack out of the kitchen area window The woman who runs it is very prejudice, rude and likes to snoop around. Ceilings and walls are cracking and peeling Community bathrooms that had urine all over the seats. Would not recommend or will ever return

This is wonderful gem in Sydney. Across the street from a few of the big hotel chains but with much better rates & wonderful personal attention. The rooms are a good size with a large closet & a huge bathroom! My husband & I loved everything about it. They only take cash & reservations are done over the phone. Easy walking to the small boardwalk & cruise ship pavilion. There is free parking behind the hotel. We highly recommend the Royale Hotel!
