The Novel Stay is a beautifully renovated 10-bedroom home complete with a kitchen for cooking meals. Bathrooms are shared, but they are extremely clean with modern decor. The bedrooms are spacious and nicely decorated. I stayed here in April 2014 for four nights and met some very interesting people visiting from Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. The Novel Stay is within walking distance to Dalhousie University, Pier 21, the Citadel, etc. Just up Dresden Road is Pete's where you can purchase fresh fruit, vegetables, groceries, etc. It's perfect for solo travelers as well as couples and families. I will be coming back.

The Novel Stay inn is a basic affordable place to stay in a great area of Halifax. This place is more of a hostel place, but with people having their own rooms. Restrooms are shared and clean. The living room downstairs is a nice place, where one can store food and eat. This inn is two short blocks away from the major shopping, eating and entertaining area of the city

This is a great alternative to a hostel if you want a more economical option. I understand that the management typically doesn't allow one night stays, but we only stayed one night. The room, bathroom and common area were clean. The establishment was not very busy and was quiet.

I would definitely stay here again! The Novel Stay is in a renovated older home in a very walkable part of Halifax. I describe it as 'hostel meets B&B' but minus the breakfast & no bunk beds. The house features locked individual rooms and a shared kitchen & living room. The Novel Stay is very unassuming from the front (don't bother looking for a sign!). Parking is tight if you bring a car, but is there if you pre-sign up for it. If you drive a very large truck, the entrance & parking will be even tighter. The inside of the Stay is very cozy-chic and the bed was one of the best I've ever slept on! If you're open to an alternate-style from a hotel or motel, this place is great!

Excellent location, close to many stores, bars, convention centre, boardwalk and the arena. Room was perfect for what we needed it for. Our emails were answered very quickly and very accomadating. Exactly what we expected and perfect for what we needed.

This property is located, right in the heart of Halifax, minutes to the board walk (water front), and close to the universities. The rooms are well furnished. And the stay has a good kitchen. If you are a couple, this is a better option then Hosteling International, as it is going to cost almost the same, but comes with better facilities and finishes.

The property manager Neil, was really helpful, and made sure that our stay was pleasant.

Communication was great from the booking onwards. Check-in was smooth & efficient. Their reception was just around the corner. Credit card payment allowed. Neil was friendly & professional. He showed us around the property. Gave us free tokens for the clothes dryer. Laundry is for free. Giving us an early check-in & late check-out allowed us to enjoy Halifax longer. We stayed in room 7 upstairs. It was clean & roomy enough for 2 persons with luggage. A window in the room made it brighter. There's a toilet & shower upstairs which we never had to wait long for. After a full day of sightseeing, it was nice to relax at the comfortable & spacious lounge area downstairs with cable TV & reading materials. We used the kitchen to make breakfast daily, however there were enough crockery, pots, pans, kitchen utensils & even condiments to make other meals. The courtyard at the back was relaxing. The whole place is kept clean, neat & tidy. Our home away from home. The best part is the LOCATION. Everything (city centre, shops, restaurants, cafes and the harbour) is within walking distance. Even the direct airport bus is a 20-minute walk away. The guests who were there while we were there, were all nice and friendly which made our 5 nights stay in June 2019 a little nicer. Value for money at the Novel Stay compared to other properties around the area made our trip affordable. We would stay here again if we get the chance to come back. We highly recommend staying at this lovely property.

Great price and fantastic location with everything within walking distance. However rooms are very small for any more than an individual traveller which would be fine if the rooms weren’t dangerously hot. As this is an old building the only form of AC is a fan and even with the windows fully open and the fan on full blast, there was no reprieve. The owner was very nice to allow me to change rooms however both were unbearable and my boyfriend and I spent the entire week being unable to sleep and feeling very close to getting ill just from being in the room overnight. Sadly due to this I would suggest paying a bit more to assure peace of mind that you can get a nights sleep if visiting in the summer months.

We booked two rooms at The Novel Stay, an apartment and a double room, and requested parking for two vehicles.

Finding the building was easy, the parking less so, and when we arrived there was nobody at the booking office however, a call reached Neil, the property manager, who was easy to deal with.

The two rooms were in separate but adjoining buildings, and the car park is a common lot shared by a number of properties. The buildings are not air-conditioned, so a fan was a must on surprisingly hot Halifax nights; we had to request these from Neil, who responded quickly. However, the windows had to be left open, which resulted in a lot of late-night street noise in an area with many students, as well as from the car park.

Our apartment (Room 3) was an upstairs bachelor apartment (bed-sit) with a large, reasonably comfortable bed, a full kitchen, and full bathroom; other than the bed, there was really no sitting area. That said, it was reasonably comfortable.

The other room (Room 9) was described as having "double sized bed and private bath". It was obvious that this was a largish room which had been converted into a self-contained unit. The bed was as described; however, the "private bath" was an enclosure in the room which contained both the shower and the toilet. While this seemed to be a somewhat strange set-up, what made it more unusual was that the shower/toilet enclosure was of clear glass, so that there was no privacy for anyone either taking a shower or using the toilet; even using frosted glass would have allowed for some degree of modesty.

Other rooms had shared toilet and shower facilities, with the challenges that come with such shared facilities.

While Room 3 was OK, Room 9 affected my overall rating. In all, the sense was of student housing/rooming house which has been converted to short-term rentals.

The novel stay was a collection of compartments in connected buildings. we accessed
our room from the back parking lot as we had reserved a slot, and with the exception of a day's drive down the south shore, we kept the car parked. We were able to make our way on foot to the restaurants and attractions that we wanted to see, mostly along the harbour. Our room was spartan, but certainly good enough, and we didn't notice anyone else sharing the floor, kitchen or bathroom, so it was quiet. In fact it is pretty much a look after yourself affair which was fine for the modest price and good location.
