We booked this B/B as for the good review we had from our Daughter and her husband. We liked the historic building and the beautiful neighbourhood.
After we arrived, we received our room key for an upstairs room with balcony.
Nobody came with us to show us around or expain the technical features.
To our surprise, we found a shoebox of a room and small bathroom.
The bathoom sing was just large enough to brush your teeth... and on.
High speed internet was very slow and constantly cutting out. We up there had lousy reception. No glasses at all in the room. We had to brush our teeth with our coffee cups. All this for a cost, we could have had a large room in a regular place. We we tried to leave next morning, our car was blocked by a staff car.
Oh, Breakfast probably was very nice for people like a hot british stile breakfast, but the were no waffles, french toast or any other selection of brad or buns available. we ask- no all we got was pan cakes and plain white bread toast.

Thank you for sharing! Sorry to hear about the room not being stocked properly during your stay. A lot has changed since this visit, our chefs work hard to keep the menus creative. Thank you for your feedback!

Kingston is a city full of grand old houses and what better way to experience it than to stay in one. The Hochelaga Inn has more than 150 years of history, an imposing facade, a fabulous location (you are walking distance from everything and yet not on the noisy main street) and a wonderful, wonderful breakfast. Apart from the staple fruit, juices, toast and freshly made muffins, every day the breakfast menu offers at least two freshly cooked hot options. I had the vegetarian hash the first day and it was so wonderful that I requested for it the second day as well - and they were kind enough to accommodate my request even though it wasn't on the menu for that morning! The room (carriage house) was clean, adequately furnished if a little small, with a wonderful balcony that offered a view of the lawns. I would give it a 4.5 rating - the only reason it doesn't get a full 5 is because the room was a little noisy- i could hear the people above me well into the night and some banging doors as well.

First I want to say this is a beautiful & historic building close to downtown, but if you are looking for frills, you won't find them here.

The first room we were given was extremely small and had stains & hair on the bed duvet. We asked to change rooms and the second room we were given was better. There is no air and there is no fridge in the rooms. The shower made an interesting screaming sound and we found it too hot to sleep one of the nights. The rooms are essentially a bedroom in a house, cute but not much like a hotel room.

The breakfast was delicious, there are 2 options daily (was an egg and pancake option both days we were there). The staff is great - extremely helpful and friendly. The history is rich and the location is ideal.

Overall, it is not a bad place to stay, it was just a little expensive for what it was.

First, I was quite disappointed with the booking policy. We booked it 2 weeks in advance and it was non-refundable from the very first minute.

The property is a gorgeous victorian home that was neglected for decades and desperately needs updates to justify $250 per night.

Breakfast was OK and yes, service was OK. In Canada, where store clerk says "thank you" even when you don't buy anything, it's normal that people bringing you the breakfast you paid for are polite and nice to you.

The property has a beautiful porch where you can chill.

Deluxe room where we stayed was HUGE, but that's was the only "deluxe" thing about it. Horrible a/c was taking a part of the window, cheap lighting fixtures, tacky pictures on the walls and unacceptable bathtub. Stains on the walls, cheap toilet paper (like you have in the public washrooms). Disappointed.

My wife and I stayed at the Hochelaga Inn for four days in September. We had visited Kingston before and were intrigued by the unique look of the Inn so were keen to visit when we returned this year. While the structure is imposing and in a beautiful setting, it needs a LOT of work!!!! Our room, while cozy was in need of some serious cleaning. The carpet was stained in several locations with drops, splotches and other discolorations. The skirt on the front of the couch looked as if someone had used it to wipe black shoe polish off of their shoes. The coffee maker (Kuerig type) was missing the top to the water reservoir and the water inside the reservoir had some kind of sludge on it! The curtain on the bathroom window was shear so anyone outside had pretty much a clear view into the bathroom. We noticed that all the windows, not only in our room, but in the main floor public rooms all needed a thorough cleaning. Also a good vacuuming of the main public areas would also be in order.
While the staff were very friendly and efficient the Inn itself had clearly seen better days and the rates should reflect the fact that it was less than a quality accommodation.

I have been travelling to kingston for over twenty years and stayed at most of the downtown hotels. I have never stayed at the Hochelaga inn and I have always heard good things so this time I thought why not try it. It is more expensive that the hotels I usually stay at but with breakfast included and from all I have been told it should be worth it.

I will start with the good.

The staff were all very nice, the hotel has charm and the grounds would,be spectacular (we were there in March) spring through fall. Breakfast was included we had a choice of two breakfasts either 2 eggs home fires fruit sausage or bacon and a veggy slaw. Or pancakes home fries sausages or bacon and fruit. My wife and 1 and I had the other they were both very good. There is a selection of coffee and teas along with juice and croissants or muffins. This is a boutique hotel so do not expect a Buffett or a menu to select from, but our breakfast was ample and delicious. The dining area is very nice.

We stayed in the Upper cottage (one queen with balcony )room 501. The room was small but comfortable . The room was as quiet as the grave no street noise, you could hear people go up the stairs but hey it’s a house built in 1876 the stairs will make a little noise but it was not late at night.

Now for the bad

The bed.
Given the point of a hotel is somewhere to sleep the fact that the mattress was effectively as soft as a box spring with 1/4 inch of padding on it this is a problem. It was the most uncomfortable bed and I did not get much sleep.

The pillows
They are no thicker than 2 inches combined with the mattress they dropped the comfort level even further.

We paid all in 179$ for a terrible night’s rest. I don’t know what the other beds are like and can only speak to room 501.

Had the bed and pillows been comfortable I would have given this hotel four stars

This was our second stay at the inn. While we could see that there was room for improvement we really enjoyed our initial stay. We thought that the inn was slowly taking steps to renovate and improve the place. Again While we really enjoyed our first stay ( king bed in large room in main part) this time we had a small queen in annex. The inside of window sashes in the room were black with grime. Some small wall decor in barroom
Was covered in dust and cobwebs. The garbage can by the parking was filled
To the brim on top with cigarette butt’s and water- and there were butts and debris all over the outside
Grounds. It Doesn’t cost Much to clean windows and rake up the yards and buy some cans of paint. Perplexed that these easy fixes are ignored but it makes the place look derelict. Grand old dame looks like she’s dying a slow painful death. Unless the inn is cleaned up unlikely we will stay again.

We booked this Inn for a 50th birthday weekend getaway celebration.

3 couple, 2 staying in the carriage house, and us in the tower room.

Got a fantastic deal on hotels.com and when we arrived at 4:00 pm, our rooms were ready and check in was super quick and friendly.

The tower room was lovely and quirky with everything we needed available. Didn’t go in the two carriage house rooms, but both couples said they liked them. Small and cozy was their description and they liked them.

The Inn is nicely located and walking distance to the vast array of fantastic restaurants/bars Kingston has to offer.

The bed was comfortable, water pressure was good and the room was clean and welcoming.

Breakfast was delicious with a choice of gorgeous pancakes, fruit, home fries, bacon or sausage or you could have eggs any style instead of the pancakes. Simply delicious and served in a timely fashion.

The inn could definitely do with a refresh in areas and perhaps aren’t showing off the grandeur of the place to its fullest but for the price and wonderful breakfast, I would absolutely return!

Thanks for a fantastic memorable weekend, see you again!

"WeLoveQueens" special offer really isn't special: we had a tour of the university and loved the look and location of the Hocalaga online. In person, the neighborhood and building are very attractive, but the advertised special was anything but: the website promises VIP amenity package, free room upgrades and more! Our room was very basic: king bed, two nightstands, one chair, TV, portable A/C, and ensuite bathroom (best part of the room), and was located at the rear entrance, which is the only entrance after 7:30PM, and right at the breakfast / reception station.

While we expected a relaxing stay, it was noisy, either from the people above, or the clattering of dishes / constant traffic outside our door. The view out the two windows was of the walkway everyone uses to enter the building, and of a wood pile & emergency staircase. We were texted, before even unpacking, that a tip was requested for our cleaning staff, but no one cleaned our room during the stay! No fresh towels or linen service, and after a long day in kingston, there wasn't even anyone at the desk to ask for service until the next morning.

Breakfast was good, but be aware only a continental breakfast is included. It did feel a bit like a cattle call at times when queuing to get breakfast or a cup of coffee. The dining area is nice, but was overwhelmingly stuffy and hot with 15+ people in it; outdoor dining was more temperate and enjoyable.

Overall, it's a lovely building in a lovely area, but we will stay elsewhere next time.

We stayed in Hochelaga Inn for 3 nights and had a great and comfortable stay. Upon check in, we were given a room in the third floor. There is no elevator, so if you have difficulty walking or climbing stairs, request for a room on the 1st or 2nd floor. Thankfully, the receptionist was kind enough to help my mom bring her carry on luggage to our room. The room was small but functional and clean. We had a queen bed and there was air-conditioning. We wished there was a small refrigerator though in the room.

Breakfast was good. They served coffee, tea, juice, toast, bagel, croissant, yogurt, fresh fruit, cold cuts and cheese.

Parking is free but they only have 9 spaces so the option is to park at the paid public parking lot at the side of the hotel.

There is no housekeeping during our stay so it was a little weird that shortly upon check in, we got a text message asking if we wanted to leave a tip for housekeeping. We did so upon check out but I think it is best that it is left to the guest if they want to tip, and not be texted about it at the beginning of stay.

It is a very nice property though with friendly service so over all, a great stay.

If you check Expedia you will find an approximate price of $156.00 CDN. per night with a 2 night minimum. It has a star rating of 4.3 which is very accurate in my opinion. You might also consider the Secret Garden at a rate of $188.00 per night with a 4.7 star rating or the Rosemount Inn at $200.00 per night with a 4.5 star rating. All three inns are excellent and within walking distance of each other as well as downtown. Hope this helps
