We bought the old Empress Motel in March 2008 at 5951 Clark Avenue in the middle of the tourist attractions of Niagara Falls. The property has 80 guest rooms, indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna bath, meeting rooms and 83 seats restaurant with bar. We have been busy renovating and upgrading our facilities during our first year in business. Gradually, we are transforming the old motel into a full service hotel. We have already achieved 3 star status from Niagara Falls Tourism. Our reception area and offices have been totally renovated. We removed everything from the concrete walls and roof structure and rebuilt our rooms. We even changed the roof!!! Past clients of the Empress Motel have been impressed!!! Best of all, we have kept our prices very reasonable.

it was disgusting, dirty, smelly, ceiling leak, garbage on floor from last people in room, got bed bug bites......i have never been in such horrible conditions. we stayed on the third floor and there is no elevator so we had to drag out luggage up 3 flights of stairs, there were no cups in room, tv didn't work, some of the towels were dirty, there were no plugs for tub or sink, no hairdryer in room, there was a curtain rod above the air conditioning unit(which was not running in july and took hours to be effective) that was there to wrap the curtain around so the air didn't just blow between the curtain in the window. did i mention we got bitten by bedbugs? i was scared to bring my luggage in when we got home incase they had gotten into the bag.

Parking is NOT free, $10/day and there was shattered glass all over the parking lot the entire time we were there. I unexpectedly got my period in the middle of the night and bled onto the bedsheets, and onto the mattress pad underneath. I didn’t think it would be a big deal because as every woman knows, blood comes out with cold water and bleach. However, after checking out I received a call from the hotel who told me they’re charging my credit card $250 for the blood stained sheets. I tried explaining and apologizing that it was an accident, the owner raised his voice over mine, called me disgusting then hung up on me. I went back to the motel asking to see the sheets but he would not let me, and he only showed me photos of the stain that would easily come out if they actually washed their sheets. I argued that I did NOT authorize any extra charges but he contended that I did, yet would not let me see the form with my signature nor would he even let me in the lobby to speak to another employee. The only form I signed was a damage form, and blood on sheets isn’t damage, it’s washable but clearly this hotel doesn’t clean their rooms or anything in them. If a child wet the bed, would they charge $250 as well? Or if someone accidentally spilled a drink on the bed? Apart from this incident that left me completely dehumanized, degraded, and out $250, the motel door locks don’t work properly, fridge doesn’t work, and no fan in the bathroom. Also, the entire hotel STINKS and they employees are not welcoming at all.

Chose this place thinking it will be convenient. Terrible mistake. Very rundown and ill managed place. Rooms were stinky. Washrooms were unpleasent and not well maintained. Stayed here one night and moved out. Couldn't use their washrooms. Dont want to stay here.

What a disgrace welcome!!! Not even a "hello" when we got to the parking lot. The receptionist or proprietor was waiting for us outside the parking area with her body guard, and she summoned us to re-park our cars in the middle of the lot exposed to the open sun before we proceed with the transaction.

She was so rude, showing no professionalism and wearing a funky looking outfit that was rundown with crazy uncombed hairdo. She will not allow us to go the reception unless we re-parked our cars despite of telling her that we would afterwards. When we got to the reception, she insisted that we paid 2 separate bills (one for the night fee and one for a supposed to be "pre-authorized" visa for damage deposit). She promised that this will not be charged in my visa. She did it anyways. She asked for everyone's ID even though my other friend and I were the only major payee. So, what bugs me the most is that she also insisted on photocopying my guests' ID (which I find ridiculous!!!). Who does this? I don't recall experiencing this in a FIVE STAR HOTEL!!!

We got to the room and our toilet was not even flushing so she gave us another room. There seemed to be a few guests in this Inn... hardly any cars in the parking lot.

Upon checkout, we went to the reception at 1030 AM because check-out time was 1100 AM but the door was locked. So, we called the tel# left on the door. I left a total of 3 voice messages and she did not return my call until 2 pm. We ended up staying until noon (What a waste of our time!). We had to contact a non-emergency police to report this and asked for their assistance on how to contact the manager (but it was the same tel# as it was on the door). We took pictures of our suites, as we were afraid that she would charge us for the damage deposit (just in case someone damages it after us... who knows!!! This place is so sketchy!). We wanted to protect ourselves. I called my VISA to inform them of this event/transaction to get this damage deposit reversed. I have left another voice msg today, reminding the receptionist/proprietor that I was charged when I was promised the opposite.

The service was horrible... not only the receptionist was unpleasant to look at but also her personality reaked. We were very upset and disappointed on this experience. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!

If this Inn would not respond to my message, I will be reporting this to TICO, which stands for Travel Industry Council of Ontario.

Please be warned and do a thorough research prior to booking....

We arrived with a prior reservation. In the office was a lady at the front desk who said she was the owner. She seemed very angry at us. We checked in. We got a knock at the door 10 minutes later. Opened the door and it was the lady. She said we had to get out of the room immediately and off the property. We asked why? She said "she does not rent rooms to middle -eastern, pakistani or Indians." At that moment we grabbed our stuff and as we left. I had to tell her that we were from the Netherlands (not that it mattered as this lady was insane). I thought Canada was multi-cultural. The kicker -- there is a Buddhist statue and an Indian restaurant on the premises.

Please never go near this horrific place. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is the worst hotel (if you can even call it that) I have ever experienced in my life. Please read this review to the end because I've detailed everything about our stay here, and towards the end it gets pretty bad...

I recently moved to Toronto from the UK and my younger sister had decided to fly out and visit me for a few days. We had arranged a family gathering at Niagara so she could see the falls and some of our other family that live in Canada. I booked a room a few weeks before arrival for myself and my boyfriend, and my younger sister and her boyfriend. We only needed a room for 1 night and weren't looking for anything fancy. We paid $200. We arrived around 3pm and checked in to the hotel. Then the nightmares began...

At check in we were told we needed to pay a $50 deposit in cash. We didn't have cash on us so had to pay to use the cash machine in the lobby. No big deal. Except I later overheard another party being charged less for their deposit, even though there were also 4 of them. The staff at check in were extremely rude but we brushed it off. I wasn't feeling well so just wanted to lie down for a little while before dinner.

We paid and were given the key to our room. We had to walk across the parking lot with our stuff in the POURING rain. Again, it wasn't a big deal and the hotel obviously have no control over the weather, but there's no covered area to walk from check in across to the rooms. There are also no elevators so if you have any issues getting up the stairs there isn't really another option for you... No wheelchair access or anything.

The room was so gross. It had this really weird smell. We even went out and purchased an air freshener spray which didn't help at all. The bathroom was so nasty. It had a bath mat hung over the side of bath that had a huge black shoe print on it... and the door didn't even close properly. When you're sharing a (tiny) room with 3 other people, it would be nice to be able to close the bathroom door. The sink wasn't clean and the toilet seat had actual pee on the seat.

The room was so small. It only just fit 2 queen beds in it. This again wasn't a huge deal as we were only staying one night, but still pretty annoying. If you were a family and had kids then there would literally be no where for the children to go in the room, except the bed. The carpets were disgusting and had really weird stains all over them. None of us even wanted to take our shoes off.

My boyfriend travels a lot for work and always checks everything in a new hotel room, so he immediately pulled back the sheets on both beds. There were little black curly hairs on both beds. He pulled off the sheets from the sides of the bed and checked the corners of the mattresses for bed bugs... See pictures attached to this review for what he found.

We thought these may have been bed bugs that had previously been exterminated. Obviously this was really gross but we thought we may have been safer staying in this room as it looked like the room had been treated for bugs previously....

We had an early dinner reservation so had to leave not long after we'd checked in. We came back to the hotel pretty early and were all quite tired so just hung out in the room. Just before we turned the light off to go to sleep my boyfriend got up to try and turn the AC on. He then saw a HUGE BED BUG crawling up the side of my sister's bed sheet!!! - See pictures attached. We googled bed bugs (none of us had ever seen them before) and it was definitely a bed bug. It also stated that bed bugs shed as they grow. The picture attached that shows the corner of the mattress, was actually their sheddings...

It was now around 11:30pm. We went down to the front desk with the picture of the bug and showed them. They agreed that yes, it was a bed bug and we should move rooms. At this point we were all so grossed out that we didn't really want another room, but it was pretty late so didn't know what else to do.

We cleared out the room and moved to the new room they had given us. This room was even more unclean than the previous room. There was a blue chair in the middle of the room that had weird white stains all over it. We obviously checked the beds immediately. We couldn't find anything at first but after sitting on the beds for about 15 minutes, we found ANOTHER BED BUG - See attached picture (smaller bug).

It was now midnight and I started to call around other hotels in the area. The Howard Johnson hotel around the corner were so helpful on the phone. They had a room for us and were extremely accommodating.

We all went down to the front desk to show pictures of the bed bug we'd found in the new room and to inform them that we were leaving and wanted a refund. The guy on the desk was very inexperienced and had no idea what to do (not really his fault, he may have been new). He called out an older woman from the back room who looked like she had literally just woken up. We explained the situation to her and she was very rude. She eventually told us there was nothing she could do and she would get the manager to issue a refund when he was in at 12pm the next day. I said that if the refund wasn't back in my account by 12:30, I would come back to the hotel in person to speak to the manager myself.

We finally checked in to the new hotel at 1:30am.

The next morning we had breakfast with the rest of my family and I called the hotel to check the manager would still be in and able to issue my refund at 12pm. They were, again, very rude on the phone and said they would call me back. An hour later they hadn't called me back so I called and spoke to someone else. She informed me that they had called out a pest control guy and if he confirmed that there were bed bugs in the rooms, then I could have a refund. I could not believe what I was hearing. I told her I had pictures of the bugs on their very recognizable, bright yellow sheets. This still wasn't good enough. She said the pest control guy would be there in the next few minutes and she would call me back.

Another hour later I hadn't heard anything so I walked to the hotel. I went in and the older woman from the night before was there. I asked for the manager and a woman that was bent down behind the desk (I later found out was the maid) screamed and pointed at the older woman and told me she was the manager. The night before this woman had told me she wasn't the manager!

I said I wanted a refund and she said they only found bed bugs in one of the rooms and because I had taken the key for the new room, they were only happy to give me half of my money back! Even though we didn't stay in the room..BECAUSE OF MORE BED BUGS. The maid now started screaming at me and telling me there were no bugs in any of the rooms, even though the older woman had literally just told me they found bugs in the first room. I was now close to tears. I had just paid another $300 for a new hotel and needed this money back. I didn't raise my voice and stayed calm the whole time. I then showed them the pictures of the bed bugs and as I did, a younger girl walked in (this was the maids daughter). She came right up to me and started screaming in my face. I was literally in shock and had no idea what to say. I couldn't believe these were actually employees of the hotel and they were acting like this to not only customers, but to anyone! The younger girl had to literally get carried out of the lobby and as she did, she screamed at me that I was a f**ing b**ch. This was all because I had shown the older woman behind the desk a photograph of a bed bug. It was crazy.

Another girl now came out of the back to address the situation. She was a little easier to talk to than the older woman. At first she was very firm on only giving me half a refund. She told me I could try and claim the other half through the website I had originally booked the hotel through. We had entered the second room and so they were charging us for that. Crazy. I told her this didn't work for me and the fact that all of this was happening was completely unacceptable. I asked what the pest control had said and she told me he wasn't coming. A couple of hours previous she told me he was almost at the hotel. She completely changed her tone and WHISPERED at me that she would give me a full refund. She then begged me not to make a big deal because she would get in trouble. This had apparently already happened twice that week! And she had been telling the hotel that they had a problem and they were ignoring it. I had to call the hotel booking site and they had to authorize the refund.

The whole experience was horrendous. I then spent the next week at home worrying I had come back with bed bugs and would infect my apartment. I didn't, thank goodness. I've just received the refund this morning, 9 days after.

Please, please, PLEASE save yourself the stress and money and do not stay here. I apologize for the lengthy review but this place was so disgusting that I could probably write a book on all the issues we experienced.

We booked this Inn with my husband as a last minute decision after a busy day at the Falls view water park with our kids. We entered the room and a horrible chemical smell hit us. I think they sprayed for bugs or something. We left the door open to vent and we turned on the AC hoping it will get better.
The washroom was dirty so I used soap and a face towel to clean the seat before my kids can use it.
It was getting late so we left our stuff and went to enjoy the beauty of Niagara Falls and the night lights. We enjoyed ourselves until close to Midnight and we returned with our exhausted kids back to our room. When we opened the door the smell did not get any better. I uncovered the bed to find dirty sheets and pubic hair in the bed. That was when we gathered our things, got in the car and drove the hour and a half home. Our clothes that I didn't even take out of the bag smelled so bad when we got home that I left the bag outside until the next morning so I can wash everything. Not a good experience at all.

One of the dirtiest hotel ever been to. Looked like somebody had puked in the washroom night before and they did not clean properly. When I entered the room, it had smelled like you are in a dumpster. The staffs were not friendly. When I checked in, a 12-13 year old girl was in the reception, after about 10 mins wait, her father came and checked me in. Another annoying thing is, after 4-5 days they had charged my credit card extra $20 without even asking me. I even did not notice that until I get my monthly statement from bank. I called them right a way, they said that I broke the key. I had handed the room key to the cashier in person, and the key was fine..

Rude, disgusting...all these policies and rules, they had more rules than the Embassy Suites. Beware of the $100 deposit for the room. They accidentally forget to reverse it and instead charge your card. Noone answers the phone when you call. I am on the phone right now with Visa to reverse the deposit charge. Noone at the lobby for checkout the next morning, lobby is locked, just drop off the key and the remote in the mailbox wow! There were only three guests staying at this third world facility, yet we were not aloud to park in the shade because those parking spots were reserved, reserved for who? In think we needed to park in front to show this third world country estate they actually had guests!!

Just the facts.
1)They claim to have balconies, a feature I place high value on. They only have a catwalk to get to your room. There are No Balconies.
2)They claim to offer a city view. Look at the pictures. That ghetto parking lot is your city view.
3)They told me when I was not satisfied they would not charge. It was early afternoon. They charged for 2 full days. This was simple dishonesty. Perhaps since the lady who said it was wearing a food stained shirt and seemed a bit confused about the process I should never have believed her.
4) The owner cursed and threatened when I took a picture for the record on leaving standing outside the property. By threaten I mean physically swinging and gesturing.
5)That picture was of an entire parking area blocked off in the middle of the day while they were renting rooms.

I did not like the place but we all have opinions. As a professional constant traveler I do not sweat the small stuff. So here you have 5 incontestable facts to ponder and decide if you want to spend your time at a resort making such a gamble. In my opinion this is not a 3 star but just 1 or 1.5 ignoring horrible service. It has a useful location but unpleasant setting that feels inner city not Niagara Falls. The disruption and need to book elsewhere plus fair suspicion they could not be trusted affected my whole trip to the area. You have been warned....be careful.
