I hate to write this review because we have stayed with John and Phyllis for several years, and have been staying at this B&B through 3 owners - BUT - this year was a disappointment. As usual the house was clean and neat, and John and Phyllis were very friendly upon our arrival. Our rooms were as we remembered, but that was where the normal ended. We were disappointed (although we knew in advance) that we would not be getting breakfast on property, but would be given a voucher to the country club. Part of the enjoyment of a B&B is the conversation with others who are staying there. Also - the $25 voucher would have been enough for one person - but it certainly didn't cover two. We like the country club (and have eaten several meals there in the past), but it is not the same as the breakfasts we have come to expect at the Cape House. The second disappointment was that the rooms were not tidied. They were clean and comfortable when we arrived, but not touched while we were there - the beds were not made, etc. This was not a big deal, but it did indicate the changes. Finally, although John and Phyllis were very friendly when we arrived and when we left, those were the only times we saw them. John did tell us that they have been trying to sell the B&B for over a year, and that they have cut back and are only open July and August. Still - we paid as much as in previous years, but got much less. We won't be going back - I'm very sorry to say.

Response from Cape_House_bb, Owner at Cape House Bed and Breakfast
Responded Aug. 19, 2019
Tracey, Your criticism of our decision to send guests to the golf club for breakfast this season is unfair. You knew when you reserved that we would not be cooking breakfast as in the past. Yet, you came anyway. You acknowledge that we are trying to sell the B&B and, as such, serving breakfast would have made morning showings impossible. We are more sympathetic to your criticism that the value of the voucher was insufficient. We had breakfasts at the club in anticipation of making this change and found that the standard breakfast @$10 per person was adequate and could be accommodated by the $25 voucher. In response to your feedback we have increased the value of the voucher to $35 to accommodate those guests who wish to have special breakfasts including Eggs Benedict or Bananas Forbes, etc. Had you discussed this with us at any time during your stay we would have been happy to adjust the value to suit you. Finally, on the breakfasts, it is completely unfair to criticize us and the club because the club cannot serve a breakfast as good as the ones we used to prepare in former years. A cheap shot. You say that we did not tidy your room. All rooms are visited daily while the guests are out and about. As has been our practice for years we hang up towels or replace them as necessary, open the windows to air out the room, empty the trash container etc. We rarely made guests beds except, for longer stays, when we change the bed linens or if they are in complete disarray. Finally, other than by chance, the only regular time when we have entertained guests has been during breakfast. So, with the foreknowledge that we would not be serving breakfast, it is a bit much to criticize us for not being at your beck and call during your stay. We tell all guests that we are available between 8:00 and 10:00 to help them plan their day. After hosting you for some years now we feel that your rating of 2/5 is more than harsh, it is vindictive. We are well familiar with Trip Advisor reviews. Over the last eight years we have read many review of our colleagues’ B&B’s. Those few who have received a 2/5 have been justly criticized for hugely callous treatment of guests including calling guests out at the breakfast table in front of other guests or cancelling reservations due to double booking mistakes during high season without a refund thereby leaving guests unable to find any accommodation in town. Let the punishment fit the crime.

We stayed at the Cape House Bed and Breakfast over the weekend of August 2- 4, 2019. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by John and shown all available amenities. We absolutely loved our stay. Everything was spotless and the house is decorated in a beautiful, summery french provincial style. The bedroom was gorgeous and the spectacular 4 poster bed was a dream to sleep in. Some of the best sleep we've had in a long time!. Each room comes with a fully appointed bathroom ensuite along with shower, shampoo and toiletries. All you have to do is pack your bags and settle in and enjoy all the beauty that Niagara on the Lake has to offer.

This is a newer home with 3 bedrooms, each with a separate modern bathroom. It is extremely clean and well maintained by the owners, John and Phyllis, who are also very organized and hospitable but non-intrusive. The owners have a separate living area within the house. There are also 2 large common area living rooms and a very nice backyard patio, again separate from the owners' patio.

We stayed in the main floor room, very spacious and just beautiful. Phyllis and John are just lovely genuine people who really took care of us. We really did sleep like babies on that comfortable bed. And breakfast was perfect, delicious home made food. Way more than we expected! Absolutely loved it at Cape House!

Stayed at the Cape House for two nights recently and what a fabulous place, owned and ran by two genuinely lovely people who definitely know what a guesthouse should be! Phyliss and John are the epitome of what perfect hosts are and we could not speak highly enough of them or their place. From the very first email to confirm our booking to the delicious (homemade) cookies when we were leaving, everything about this place was brilliant. As a young couple (late 20s) we were apprehensive about staying in a guesthouse as we never had before but this place totally changed our opinion on that front (hopefully other places are as good but I doubt it). Delicious breakfasts (peach pancakes that I should have got the recipe for), spotlessly clean rooms, comfortable beds, perfect location for the town (10 min stroll), bike rentals close by, a short cycle to some of the local vineyards, what more could be asked for. We really couldn't speak highly enough of the Cape House and thank you Phyllis and John for your hospitality, recommendations and warm welcome. I really hope we get to stay with you guys again. Stuart & Deirdre.
