I am an experienced outdoorsman and enjoy some pretty hardcore camping. My wife however is not, and we have a 2 year old that we want to introduce to camping and the great outdoors as early as responsibly possible. No one has any interest in car camping sites, so finding the right amount of middle ground was not as easy as I had hoped. Through some research I found the Clear Lake Eco Retreat, and booked a weekend.
Wow, what a great decision that turned out to be! The retreat is 50+ acres of largely untouched Canadian wilderness that borders some cottage country on one side, and an enormous expanse of Crown land on the other. You cannot drive to the retreat, which we enjoyed. You will park at a marina and the owners will pick you and your gear up in their 'water taxi' and then paddle you over to the resort, which was a lot of fun. At the end of the paddle is a short hike into the heart of the resort, also enjoyable. It is a very beautiful and picturesque place, and the husband and wife owner have done a really outstanding job of installing infrastructure that does not detract from the remote nature of what they have. There is no hydro coming into the resort, but through solar arrays there is electricity to power their lights and even a freezer (you will eat quite well here!). They have a non electric water pump for running water which was really cool to see, and it feed a filtration system for drinking water, a self-catering garden (they grow lots of fresh veggies on site) and even a water tower for storage. The owners are great people that are passionate about what they have built and are eager to share their experiences that brought them to where they are today.
You will sleep in a tent here, but if you don't have one they will supply it for you, and don't worry about that dreaded hard, uneven ground often associated with tents: they have built several large wooden platforms to set tents on in a few nice areas around the property, providing an unexpected level of comfort. Now, some may ask "but what about... you know... the washroom?". Well, no need roadside youre left to do as the gears do, because they have built maybe the nicest outhouse I've ever seen into the side of a cliff, with a skylight and bug netting to boot. It was private, but might and breezy, comfortable and clean. The owner compost the waste, so it did even have the slightest of smell. Really impressive.
The small lake they are on offers excellent swimming and good fishing, and there are uncountable similar lakes in the Crown land behind them that are easy to get to, and even at this time of year did not have other people in or around. It was all very pleasant and relaxing, and we couldn't have been happier with the trip.

If you are interested in camping and the outdoors but are not very experienced, this is an amazing option. The Retreat has packages and pricing that range from a place to just set up a tent and drop your bags to fully guided canoe tours of the surrounding land with meals cooked and served for you.

Clear Lake Eco Retreat is a special place, and will be seeing me and my family for years: this is the kind of place vacation traditions are founded on. Highly recommended.
