Family of 4 with two young children stayed at the Lord Elgin over the Family Day long weekend. It is a great location and looks beautiful from the outside. We walked to the Parliament and other sites which was very convenient. The front desk staff were not very helpful during check-in. We were also disappointed with having to use valet service which was about $40/day. The kids enjoyed the breakfast although the service was a bit slow. We made good use of the pool and hot tub with the kids as well. The room itself was a bit small but I guess did the job, it seemed a bit run down. We had major issues with noise during both nights which impacted our impression of the hotel. On the first night, a woman was outside in the hall yelling "9-1-1" for a very long time. It was so disturbing that my husband had to leave our room at midnight to see what was going on. This woke up the entire family and my daughter was scared for the rest of our time at the hotel. The woman appeared high or ill so we ended up calling down to the front desk to notify security. On the second night, people were running up and down the halls and we again called down to notify front desk. I guess these things may come with staying at a downtown location, but we wouldn't return back.

Disappointing The building itself is beautiful. They’ve kept much of the original architectural details. We booked an upgraded, park view, king suite. Our ceiling had several repairs that were not finished. Don’t know how long that detail has been missed. The layout was nice but we found the bed on the hard side. Appreciated that the windows could open. Restaurant was disappointing. Ate lunch our first day and, although the Buddha bowl sounded great, it was fairly bland. Breakfast the next morning was terrible. Eggs were not cooked as ordered. Was not the fault of the kitchen, as the server didn’t listen well. Another server rectified it for us. “Home fries” were frozen wedges that were much much too salty, and hard. Bacon seemed coated with something. Very disappointing. Website advertises a Sunday breakfast brunch but there was not one. Would not stay again.

The location of this hotel is great. All staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant was excellent. The eggs benedict (with peameal ham) were the best I’ve eaten and the salmon in puff pastry was excellent. The Rideau canal hadn’t opened yet but we walked across the street and skated at the Rink of Dreams which was lovely.

This is overall a very nice hotel. Historic decor is beautiful. The staff was helpful at reception. Valet parking was a bit of a mess, cars lined out onto the road blocking a lane on Elgin st. Not enough staff to park I guess, and they don't allow you to self-park. Excellent location to walk the city, Rideau mall, NAC. The rooms are small, I paid extra this visit for a larger/better view room, but it wasn't much bigger than a standard room and the view was of the rooftop. The pillow situation is strange, only 3 smaller pillows per bed rather than 2 or 4 queen size pillows. Still, beds were comfy. No glass cups available, only disposable coffee cups. The bathrooms are very tiny. But the updated rain shower was very nice. The pool in the basement is absolutely freezing, feels like it's not even heated? The restaurant was quite overpriced with a very limited menu, I paid $35 for a chicken caesar salad that was basically all lettuce. Overall I liked the hotel though, it's quaint and historic and can't beat the location downtown. It just needs some upgrades and maybe improvements in management to have it all run more smoothly. I would stay again, but in a classic room for the price (and size).

Our Favourite Ottawa hotel. We have stayed several times at the Lord Elgin for our special occasions like our wedding anniversary and for birthdays. The staff always go out of their way to make our stay memorable! The location is perfect being close to the Market area, Sparks Street mall and to museums. Always lots to do and convenient to excellent pubs and restaurants. Five Star!
