On the evening of 19 May my wife and I were to attend social event marking my retirement. As a gift to mark the occasion a good friend of mine booked my wife and I an Elgin Class room at your hotel as it was close to the venue. He had made the reservation with his credit card, I received notification by email. Our experience trying to accept the gift was very disappointing. It was clear from the moment we arrived that the staff working the front desk was inexperienced and had little knowledge of the Hotel or the characteristics of the rooms. There was a trainee, and another relatively inexperienced clerk working the desk. We told the clerk that we had a reservation that had been made by a friend as a gift, she found it and after almost 10 minutes at her terminal she informed me there would be a $150 security deposit and presented me the machine for my credit card, I inserted it and then noticed that the charge was for the the full cost of the room. I asked why we were being charged the full cost when the room was a gift. This threw her and after a few minutes at her terminal she ended up going into the back with the desk manager to sort it out. After another 10 minutes the clerk returned and informed us there was nothing in the notes about charging the room to credit card the room was booked with and they had to charge the room to my credit card. She suggested that they could call my friend to sort it out, but at this point we were well over a half hour at the front desk and I was no longer interested in having my friend shell out over $300 for a room at the Lord Elgin. It was at this point that I received a notification that my credit card had been charged for the room even though I never approved the transaction. We then waited for the clerk to cancel the reservation and refund the charges to my credit card. We were at the desk dealing with the clerk, who was trying her best, for over 45 minutes. Through all of this the desk manager was conspicuous by his absence. He was in the back working at a terminal, completely disengaged from our issue or the ever increasing number of people waiting for service. He did not engage with us, assist or take over for the desk clerk even though it was obvious she was having difficulty. He clearly did not want to engage with us, he either did not want to deal with unhappy clients or we were either not important enough to engage. I have spent much of my career travelling for business, to large centers and small. I am hard pressed to recall a less effective front desk staff. I cant speak for what happened during the original booking or why the original reservation wasn’t managed correctly, but I can tell you that the desk manger on duty at 1800, 19 May 2022 was completely ineffective, and does not have the knowledge, experience or interpersonal skills required to do the job at a motel, let alone at a hotel that wants to be considered elite.

Very friendly staff but hotel is definitely in need of a refurb - it’s a bit dated! Great location and well situated for Parliament Hill and surrounding area. Lots of places to eat but please do consider booking in advance to save any disappointment!

If your idea of decor is brown, brown, brown then some more brown this is the place for you. Our carpets were badly stained so we changed rooms. The corridor carpets are very badly stained. We changed rooms because of several problems. We couldn’t open the window because the stench from the fans outside filled the room. The air con didn’t work so we resorted to opening the door for an airflow, not really recommended. The towels were so grey, threadbare and discoloured that I actually wiped myself dry in a dress I hadn’t worn, that is a first for me. I didn’t even sleep in the bed, I sat up in the chair all night. We briefly went to the restaurant where we were sat next to a work station overflowing with dirty plates etc, we left and went to a glorious restaurant at the nearby Chateau hotel. There’s no excuse really for this it’s basic hygiene standards. There’s so much going for this hotel, location is excellent, the staff are welcoming and the building is solid. Such a shame, I recommend a renovation, new towels, new bedding and a thorough clean. You might be ok then.

We received exceptional customer service from all the staff at the Lord Elgin, in particular from Anwar and Renan! We had originally booked to come stay Valentine’s weekend in February 2022; but, due to the trucker protests we had to rebook to April. Not only did they allow me to reschedule at the same nightly rate, they also had a $200-off promo for staying two or more nights. In addition to that, they offered to upgrade our room to a parkview suite at no extra charge and when I told them it would be my daughter’s birthday, they put a nice card and chocolates in the room for her! The hotel was exceptionally clean and the location was within walking distance to everything. The 15-min baggage loading area can get a bit crowded and I opted to not pay the $35/day valet parking fee; but, instead parked across the street at the National Arts Centre which only cost me $24 total for Fri-Sun. So my only critique would be that it would be nice for the hotel to offer either free parking for their guests in their lot or a bit more affordable rate without using the valet service. Otherwise it is a fantastic hotel to stay at with great staff, amenities and location!

When we arrived from England we were met by Christopher who was very welcoming and professional. He was amazing the whole time of our 9 night stay and gave us an amazing historical tour treasure hunt. Rooms were large, immaculate and spacious. Bathroom and products lovely. Great. View of confederation park. Fab pool and gym. We didn’t use the gym but used the pool every day. Amazing location close to Byward market, Walking distance to the locks, art gallery and everything as it’s in the heart of Ottawa. Loved this hotel!

The Lord Elgin Hotel. front and center downtown Ottawa, is a classy parliamentarian-looking building in keeping with the Canadian Parliament Buildings just up the way making it one of the city's grande dames. It has a decorative 'split personality' with something old and something new but maintaining comfortability. The hotel is a favorite spot with Ottawa tourists and mini-staycations for guests who frequent the NAC (National Arts Center) which is almost directly across the street. The Lord Elgin is located on Elgin Street (imagine that) with a spiffy front entrance round-about and this area is great for pubs, restaurants, galleries and shopping venues. Despite its age, its limestone exterior and green-colored roofing seem freshly tinged. This prestigious exterior carries on inside to a long lobby lined with maple millwork and marble flooring and an excellent communal space for locals and guests to converse. The lobby is bookended by the Grill 41 Restaurant & Bar at one end and a coffee shop at the other. Ottawa's world famous Tulip Festival is the inspiration behind Lord Elgin's artwork. The Elgin's amenities, are not its strong suit, but has a lap pool, whirlpool, exercise room, sauna, comfortable bar and restaurant .......and lets not forget the ubiquitous Starbucks. Service was personable and efficient. Grill 41 Restaurant & Bar, the resident Lord Elgin eatery, is a very popular Ottawa chow-down with a locally sourced menu. Up for grabs are steaks, chops, a selection of pastas and pizzas and other dishes. For breakfast do as I did, order the massive "lumberjack 'and take what you can't eat back to your room. I was delighted with my updated Art-Deco styled Elgin Class room. Although this room wasn't five star, it was extremely clean, well maintained and homey. Maple headboards and cabinets were covered in a dark brown color.....lots of wood. The bath was clad in marble featuring a walk-in shower. Overall, the room was spacious with lots of natural light through the windows that also provided a view of Confederation Park.........and the room was very comfortable. So if you want to feel like a Duke or an Earl or a Lord.......then try the........Lord Elgin....the Architecture of a French Chateau.

I actually switched to the Lord Elgin after a VERY grim experience at the Holiday Inn, and it was such a nice difference. The staff were kind and accommodating from the moment I checked in. The room was clean and I’m a big fan of the 1940’s vintage feel. It was lived-in enough to feel charming, but not shabby. The location is AMAZING, and somehow manages to be a 10 minute walk from everywhere! My 14 year old liked the pool and gym, and I liked the hot tub. Booking directly with the hotel meant I got a $200 rebate because we stayed 2 nights, which I wasn’t expecting but made the stay an absolute bargain! The Lord Elgin will be my first choice hotel in Ottawa from now on.

The staff was extremely courteous and professional, very helpful if anything was needed. Was very disappointed in the room, had a queen size bed and I knew the room would be smaller but I felt like I was in a closet for 2 days. One window and not a lot of daylight to come through. I was at the end of a hallway and 4 doors were all crowded around eachother and the noise was awful. Very small bathroom, no towel rack near shower. Nowhere to put clothes when in the bathroom and when reaching in to turn on shower, you have to reach far and you get wet. You cannot adjust temperature without getting wet. Lobby with fireplace is very nice. Room had only one office type chair , no comfy reading chair. You either sit on the bed or in this office chair. No bottles of water in the room and ONE tea pod. Very clean but still a disppointment. Wouldn't stay again.

I spent two nights at the Lord Elgin while on a mini-break to Ottawa. The location is, IMO, perfect: close to Parliament Hill, the National Arts Centre, the Rideau Canal, Byward Market, the National Gallery and the Rideau Centre. Immediately south of the hotel is the Elgin neighbourhood shopping street, home to many restaurants and shops. The Parliament Station on the O train is a 10 minute walk. The hotel has been renovated while maintaining its 1941 original style. The indoor pool and whirlpool were great. Hotel staff were friendly and professional. I specifically booked a corner King room (an Elgin Class room) which provided lots of windows. The room was large with a very comfortable bed, a chaise longue by one of the windows and a large bathroom. Bedroom and bathroom were spotless. This was my first stay at the Lord Elgin but it will definitely be my go to hotel in Ottawa!
