Located in Ottawa's Byward Market area, this small, boutique hotel is simply wonderful. Walking distance to most attractions, the rooms are clean and have a balcony and a small kitchen area equipped with dishes and cutlery, a fridge, microwave, and a table for two (even wine glasses and a bottle opener). And the attention to small details: there are half a dozen umbrellas in the lobby, just in case you run into inclement weather and at the excellent breakfast buffet (included in the price), the plates are stored in a plate warmer. The only negative: there is no on-site parking, so you have to park in the almost next door public parking--an added cost. A small detail. The bottom line, we plan on staying here again on our next trip to Ottawa.

We were surprised by the residential neighborhood but found we were just down the block from the USA Embassy. Wonderful market area. So many restaurants nearby. Also close to the art museum, the Basillica, and several government buildings. We wanted to see the Canadian War Museum - that was just 5 or 10 minutes away. We had a small room with a balcony. Only choice this day was twin beds. They were very comfortable. They provide china and silver in the mini kitchen - very nice touch. The hotel breakfast was excellent. Nice selection of very fresh fruit.

Location-Location
The Byward Blue Inn is all about location for the visitor. A two minute walk to the heart of the Byward Market and ten minute walk to the Shaw Centre and numerous other spots in the area has this place as the best location for a small, intimate hotel. With a small but secure parking area under the hotel you can leave your car there for a small fee. Our room looked out onto Clarence Street itself which in this case was not the best of choices. Summer, I suspect would be even worse for the following reason. This area has been consumed by hordes of homeless people, drug addicts and others that continually raise a ruckus during the early and late evening. As our Nations Capital it does not bode well for tourism.
Unfortunately, the elevator for this hotel was not functioning when we got there but the staff kindly carried our luggage up to our third floor room. The rooms themselves are small but adequate with microwave, cutlery and dishes enough for an extended stay if that is your desire. The room was clean and comfortable. What was outstanding was the included breakfast provided. The hot serving section had scrambled eggs and peameal bacon, hard- and soft-boiled eggs and ham and egg breakfast sandwiches. There were cold cereals as well as yogurt, fresh pineapple and cantaloupe several different juices, croissants and several different breads for toasting with peanut butter, honey and jam packets. For drinks there was ice water, coffee, tea, hot chocolate unfortunately no decaf. Two staff members were on hand to constantly refill all stations. Again, the location was perfect for dining out or shopping.

I enjoyed my stay though parking overnight at the adjacent city owned parking lot was an additional $15. The room faced the front and had a nice balcony - I didn’t notice any street noise. Furniture was quite old and basic, but rooms and hallways were nice and clean. The tv did not work - when I asked at the front desk the person on duty just said ‘make sure the blue light is on the cable box’. It was - still didn’t work. I think those at the front desk are meant to help with problems - I got no help. The room was overly warm as well - the only solution was to open the window. Breakfast was good - scrambled eggs with bacon, yogourt, nice croissants, cereal, melon, toast, bagels etc. Overall my stay was just ok - if you want a modest 3* hotel near the Byward Market, the price at Byward Blue is hard to beat. Luxury - definitely not, but a good mid range hotel close to all the sights.

I stayed in ByWard Blue Inn for the second time, after september of the last year with my wife. The location is excellent, very close to ByWard Market with plenty shops and restaurants. Our room n° 61, with balcony and umbrella, at the 6th floor, is very well equipped and very clean, with a confortable bed, with fridge, kettle, cofee machine, wifi and a good bottle of wine included, like a courtesy gift of the Manager mr. Angjelo Lumi, a polite, kind and helpful man, always ready to inform the customers with suggestions about places and venues.
A special mention for mr Abdul for his kindness and sympathy.
Bathroom with tub and shower with very hot water.
Breakfast of various flavors is always good and abundant self-service. Cofee and tea is available for customers all day long.
ByWard Blue Inn is my home in Ottawa !

We booked this hotel as part of our Eastern Canada road trip and it was easy to find and in an ideal spot near to the Byward market area. There is a problem with the homeless and begging in the city but that would affect you in most hotels in the area.
The Byward is a no frills place but the balcony for the room, the great breakfast and the excellent cleaning made it the best value so far.
Our room was spacious and the bed comfortable so all in all we were very happy. There was even dressing gowns for us. We parked in the public car park next door and that cost me 14 dollars for the night it was handy and secure so no issues with that either.

I have never visited a hotel that has been more welcoming and accommodating. From the moment we contacted them to let them know that our flight had been delayed, to our arrival at 3:00am, nothing was too much trouble. Despite the hour we were warmly welcomed, checked in without fuss and inside our room within 5 minutes. There is a lift to all floors. Our room was spacious and very well equipped with a fridge a microwave oven and television. The large double bed was very comfortable and there were plenty of towels in the bathroom which had both a bath and shower. Breakfast, included in the price, was in a well spaced room on the ground floor and offered cereals , yogurts, fruit as well as hot food, toast, croissants and condiments. All the staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. The cost our 3 night stay was 337 Canadian dollars, inclusive of taxes, which at the current exchange rate was £217. A delightful hotel situated in downtown Ottawa within comfortable walking distance of major attractions.

What a pleasant surprise!
We thought we would try this smaller hotel as the location was excellent, the price was extremely reasonable, and the reviews were very good. We were not disappointed.
The room is so well appointed, very clean, and bright.
The kitchenette is well stocked - dishes, glasses, cutlery, sink, dish soap, kettle, teapot, microwave, coffee maker (and coffee), mini fridge/freezer (with a full ice cube tray, bottle of water, butter, creamers).
There’s also a safe, ironing board, bathrobes, slippers.
The bath towels were fluffy and bright white.
Lots of windows and a balcony with a table and two chairs.
Parking was literally steps away at only $15; on-site parking is limited but would also have been $15.
We will definitely stay here again!

The rooms are ok but the service is awful! I booked and paid for a balcony room and was given a non balcony room at check in. I asked for a balcony room. The front desk guy Angelo literally yelled at me calling me a complainer.I lots of venom and hostility in his voice. He gave me a balcony room but didn't want to give me a receipt for payment of the room. He accused me of not trusting him. It's customary to give customers a receipt. So eventually he gave me one.
I booked a room for the next day. I should've left. The maid was standing outside my door spying on me. I left to change rooms and there was a large bin blocking me. I asked her to move it and she verrry slowly walked over to move it. I went into the other room and put a do not disturb sign on the door. Shortly after I went out. While I was out the maid broke into my room and put milk in the fridge and left the bathroom cabinet door open. They never requested milk. She's not allowed to enter my room without my consent. I told the front desk guy and he said he'd talk to her.
Then at 5am someone called my room, didn't say anything and hung up. This person called back 5 min later and hung up again. I unplugged the phone. It was probably one of the staff trying to harass me.
It's a really creepy place. I won't return. The service has gone way downhill. I dont recommend this hotel.

Hello M. Cohen, We are disappointed to read that staff did not perform according to your expectations in-spite of our best efforts to make you feel home every time you have stayed with us. We welcome criticism but we do not appreciate fabrications and attacks on our hard working staff. Our records show that for the past two years, we have made exceptions by allowing you to book without a credit card. Furthermore, in a few occasions, we have experienced rather unpleasant encounters and have tolerated as we did not want any problems. Inspite of this, we have always been accommodating by arranging for early check ins/late check outs and even provided a hotel room with no security deposit. As for your last stay, Hotel Agent offered you a standard queen room because you showed up very early and that there were no other rooms available. We weren't trying to give you a less expensive room. Rather, we were being accommodating. Also, the Agent was trying to work with you because previously, when the room was not ready for an early check in, the staff would have to put up with tantrums thrown out at them. As per phone calls, we wish to clarify that recently we have changed our phone line system. Our phone provider has informed us that there have been some incompatible room phones that have acted up. This issue has already been rectified by the company. As per other false accusations, they deserve no merit to respond to. Once again, staff has always gone above and beyond their line of duty to make you happy. It is very unfortunate that managements' kind reminder to provide a credit card and show respect to staff for future visits was not well received by you. It was our pleasure to hosting you in the past and wish you all the best! Thank you for staying with us. Sincerely, ByWard Blue Inn Management

What a charming, very well run, almost quaint inn. We will always stay here when we travel to Ottawa. We had a room with 2 twin beds and a balcony - try to get a room with a balcony. The balcony had an umbrella, 2 chairs and a table, and a view of the Parliament Buildings. The room was comfortable, with very nice towels and face cloths, A/C (a MUST in the hot months), a fridge, coffee maker, kettle, and plates/cutlery/glasses/mugs. It's hard to find the right word to describe the atmosphere in the inn - old worldly? Proud? Graceful? The staff (and I mean everyone from the front desk to the breakfast room staff, the housekeepers) all had a sense of pride in the service they provided. The breakfast was described as 'continental' but was so much more than that. Juices, yogurt, fresh fruit, 'egg-mcmuffin' type sandwiches, bacon or sausages or ham (it alternated), REAL scrambled eggs, coffee, tea, steamed milk, hot chocolate, waffles, toast, etc. It was a lovely start to the day, in a spotless and comfortable room. In the afternoon, a person would knock on the door to ask if we needed any more coffee or tea or cream for the room. It was very clean. Umbrellas to borrow. Not much parking, and it's tiny, but there is a big parking lot right beside. Very close to all the things you might want to do in Ottawa, very walkable. Walking distance to the Byward Market (2 blocks). As in all cities, there are unfortunate people on the streets at all times of the day or night, be aware of your surroundings (and we had no issues). This is a charming hotel, a gem, and we recommend it highly.
