The Alt is part of the upscale Le Germain Canadian chain and the high quality design and staffing shows here: information requests were answered virtually immediately, and the room design and comfort were both high quality. The location is quite central to government office buildings and tourist sites, all walkable, as well as to public transit through the O-train. There's a Nespresso machine in the room, a fridge (in most), and a magnifying mirror in the bathroom, though the lighting is a bit dark. The room had a desk with work chair and a comfy chair for reading, though there was no light directly above the chair. The biggest downside of our room was that it looked directly onto another building, even on the 9th floor -- so staying in the room to chill makes it seem a bit cell-like, despite it being comfortable (prospective visitors might want to ask specifically for a room with some kind of view other than a wall). If having indoor parking on-site is important, note that the lot across the street is covered (though not indoors) and it's pricey, with no in/out privileges. The location is convenient to coffee shops like the excellent Little Victories, Thali for Indian food, and all the restaurant and bar spots on Bank and Elgin

This hotel has a very trendy and cool vibe. alt Hotel Ottawa is a six year old facility, part of the French-Canadian Le Germain chain of hotels. The guest room, lobby and bar/cafe area have a trendy, European vibe. Guest rooms feature at least one rough finish wall and original artwork, Nespresso coffeemaker and importantly, DAILY housekeeping. Hotel staff are very friendly and accommodating.

The hotel is five minutes walk to the Parliament building district, Sparks Street pedestrian mall and to a regional light rail metro station.

Only cons—oven in the cafe was out one morning. Other than a coat closet, no storage drawers whatsoever although the saison accommodates generous luggage storage to facilitate “living out of your suitcase.”

A property recommended for central Ottawa stays.

My girlfriend and I were booked into this hotel by our travel agent. We were delighted with this modern quaint hotel that is very well situated to access anywhere by foot. The hot chocolate was excellent and the reception staff were helpful and informative

I was disappointed in my recent stay at Alt Ottawa. We were two couples staying several days in two rooms over a recent long weekend and sadly we all had more complaints than kudos. Our rooms were small and overlooked a wall. The only plus was good water pressure in the shower and good tv. There was no bottled water in the room and no fridge. The hotel seems to be significantly understaffed. We made several requests for amenities at reception and in each case after waiting a long time and then calling with our requests a second time we ended up having to go downstairs and waiting until we could could get - eg - an extra towel. I had paid $30 extra to bring my dog (they have a dedicated floor) and had read on line that this comes with a water bowl, dog bed, treats. I'd expected these would be waiting in my room, but no, there was nothing. Again, I had to call several times, wait, and finally go to reception to ask again to get these amenities for my pet (and the dog treats never arrived at all). There was no servicing of rooms at all, supposedly because of covid, so our rooms were not refreshed at all. It's pretty miserable to stay in a hotel where the rooms are not made up at all. Supposedly after 3 nights the hotel changes the room if you are a long staying guest, but we left before this kicked in. This was not my first post covid trip but it was the first time I have experienced this. When we checked in we were given a paper explaining covid rules which included a phone number to be let in after 11 pm since, they said, the hotel closes its doors after that time. Fortunately this didn't actually seem to be the case as we returned late each night and the hotel was still open (a good thing too since we had left the phone number in the room). The lobby area is very nice with a pool table and small cafe area. Breakfast is not included and the nespresso machine in the room uses paper cups (another supposed covid measure). Parking nearby is expensive: the lot across the street is more convenient and cheaper for overnight than street parking but it still adds a lot of expense to one's stay. Would I stay at Alt again? The location is good but everything else is wanting. No, I'll go elsewhere next time I visit Ottawa.

Response from Florence Leblanc-Belanger, Guest Services / Front Office at Alt Hotel Ottawa
Responded Aug 9, 2021
Good morning Jacqueline, Thank you for taking the time to provide us your feedback. I am glad to see you enjoyed our lobby area, the shower pressure as well as the television. However, I am sorry to see your overall stay did not meet your expectations. Please note we do have some fridges in certain rooms as well as pet amenities available, but both have to be requested in advance. In addition, during the pandemic, for guests and employees safety, we do indeed have additional measures in place including replacing all glass dishes by paper, avoid servicing the rooms, as well as locking the doors at night when the employee has to step away in order to better control the traffic coming into the hotel. Overall, I remain sorry you were disappointed with your stay and invite you to call me at the hotel if you wish to talk about your experience further. We truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back so we can regain your trust. Warm regards, Florence Leblanc-Belanger

This is an expanding chain and when we were on Montreal they were opening a hotel in Denver so we all had a free cocktail. This was handy as the prices for the cocktails were a little eye watering. The hotel was close to all the things we wanted to see so very convenient but it's modern exposed concrete decor might not please everybody. What did not please me was the plethora of ventilation pipes outside the window which were ugly and rather intimidating. Ask for a room higher up perhaps?

Dear paulines303, Thank you for taking the time to review us. Being in downtown does make it very convenient to visit local attractions but at the same time we are surrounded by buildings and do have city views. Regarding the hotel in Denver, we are a Canadian company and have hotels across Canada but not in the US, perhaps you referring to another brand. Once again thank you for your time and we look forward to welcoming you back to one of our hotels on your next trip to Canada. Best Dino Gurusamy

Overall I would not stay here again. While the rooms are described as minimalist I would suggest they actually look run down. The restaurant area ran out of most things on the menu for 3 evenings in a row since they said they were not prepared for the amount of people who stayed, which is odd considering the hotel should know this. They also provide no service to the rooms (even when staying a week) which I understand due to Covid but still do not reflect any change in price. You would hope a mid week change out of bedding/towels would happen. The customer service in their front desk staff was minimal and very unhelpful. Overall you can definitely find better accommodations in the area for a much better price and level of service.

This hotel is in a good central downtown location. It is within walking distance to parliament (3min walk.) Decor is very modern. Rooms are on the smaller size, but the bathroom is pretty spacious. You can see into the shower from the bedroom, obviously fine for a couple, but if not, then that could be an issue. Bed and pillows are comfortable.
There is no mini fridge in the room. Hotel is very clean.

You need to pay for parking, there is a parking garage across the street so that is convenient, cost is about $23 a day.

Fitness room is not great, it has extremely minimal equipment. Dumbbells go up to 20lbs, there is one full body cable machine, 2 bikes, 2 treadmills and an elliptical. There were three of us in there at one time and it was too crowded.

Overall would recommend this hotel as it has a clean and modern feel to it

My wife and I wanted a mini getaway over the Canada Day long weekend. We had checked out a couple of things but we decided to attend the big party in Ottawa. Found this hotel on Trip Advisor. Price was very reasonable for a downtown hotel, so we booked it kot knowing what to expect. We arrived and the front desk already had everything set up so check in was easy. Parking is across the street and it was $42 for 3 nights, which again is very reasonable. We had a room on the fourteen floor. Please note no room over looks the front street Slater, as the hotel also has condos and that takes up the front of the hotel. All rooms from my understanding are Queen rooms. Everything was clean and in good working order. Staff is super friendly and yiu should check out the bar/Cafe in the evening as it has a great vibe. Location to everythingnus great. Overall great hotel and this will be our number one hotel when we stay in Ottawa.

The room was small (no drawers) and facing a wall but reasonably clean. The remote for the tv didn’t work. There was a fire alarm in the condo that shares the building that resulted in an evacuation of the hotel at 3 am. This may be beyond the control of the hotel but no apology was extended or any mention of the inconvenience in check out. Check out was slow and a receipt couldn’t be provided because despite having had no issue at check in they couldn’t find my reservation in their new system (they were unfamiliar) even with a reservation number, name and room number. I had to leave for a meeting and had to follow up twice to get a receipt. The aloofness of the staff made the experience a negative one.

Dear Cruiser822730, Thank you for taking the time to review us. I am sorry to hear about your experience during your last stay, I would like to assure you that this is not a typical stay at Alt.We were in the middle of a major system switch and to add to that there was a fire alarm in the building. This stretched our resources to a point where we could not provide the same level of service we typically do. Once again please accept my apologies and if there is anything we can do , please do not hesitate to contact me. Best Regards Dino Gurusamy

All staff smile when you enter the lobby. You get the feeling that they enjoy working. Room was so clean and beds comfortable. Service was wonderful. They offered us dog bed for our dogs and umbrella's when it rained. Due to Covid 19 the hotel provides bags to put your dirty towels and you leave it outside the door and they replace them with clean ones in a bag - great idea- obviously organized as we were provided us with information on covid 19 policy at the hotel. Would strongly recommend.
