Buckingham House, a bed and breakfast in the heart of Stratford, is a short walk from downtown shops, services, restaurants and the Avon and Studio Theatres. The Festival and Tom Patterson Theatres are within easy walking distance too. The house is Italianate in design, its exterior features include decorative brick details, high windows, overhanging eaves and period wooden bracket trim. There is a downstairs parlour and an upstairs sitting room inside for relaxation and conversation.

We stumbled on this place by accident but were thrilled that we did. Shelly is a wonderful host, and provided many thoughtful touches to make our stay so pleasant. The common areas were well-equipped with complimentary beverages, travel brochures and weather reports, and wi-fi. The rooms were cozy and well-appointed. Most attractions are a short walk away.

The highlight, however, was breakfast--fresh Ontario strawberries, just-baked lemon cranberry loaf, crust-less quiche and a mouthwatering vegetable hash.

Buckingham House is such a nice place that it is sad that I have so much to criticize. All of these come from a two night stay, which I think maximizes the liabilities of the place and minimizes the positives.

The negatives had to do with the food and with the design of the rooms.

I know there is a Bed and Breakfast divide between the "gourmet" crowd and the "don't need lunch" crowd. I fall towards the "don't need lunch" and there just simply wasn't enough food at breakfast. It was all very delicious, especially the pastries (she can bake up a storm!), and Shelley was very mindful of the food issues of her guests, but it just didn't fill me or my friend up.

As for the rooms, there was nowhere to put anything! Very little space in the bathroom, almost no flat surfaces in the main room. There was ample hanger and dresser space, but for those of us who live out of our suitcases in short stays, that isn't much good.

But the bed was so comfortable! And the temperature in the room was perfect! And the street is quiet and close to the the Avon and the Patterson! And the library is well-stocked, and there are great sitting areas, a good coffee machine, good supply of filtered water, nice little communal fridge. All of this would grow in value if I was staying for a longer period.

Shelley was so friendly and accommodating to both our early arrival and late departure times. She is also a good conversationalist and a totally charming host. And she got us a discount at the Prune Restaurant as well.

So I hate to carp about this so, but as I see more and more B&Bs I get more and more sensitive to their positives and negatives.

All other bed-and-breakfasts we have used in Stratford (and Niagara-on-the-Lake) have allowed us to drop off our bags on arrival, before going to lunch and theatre. Not here. We were told to leave our bags in the car and come back later.

Interesting. Well, it was a long non-stop drive from Toronto; we were fairly anxious to use the washroom. No, not here. We were told to use the tourism office downtown.

It's not as if we dropped by unexpectedly. We had a reservation and had put down a deposit.
This was our first stay here—and will certainly be our last.

The bedroom named "William" was pleasant enough, although the ensuite bath was in fact right in the room. The sink and shower were there, with the toilet in a tiny closet you had to leave the door open to use. There was Wi-Fi for our laptop but no television.

Compared to other b&bs, this had more of a rooming-house atmosphere. For the price, we had expected the style that is standard elsewhere. At breakfast, you make your own tea and milk comes in little plastic tubs. The meal was quite ordinary except for some reasonable scones.

We cannot help but note that the "excellent" reviews this establishment is getting are chiefly from first-time reviewers. Experienced travellers will not find Buckingham House excellent or even very good. But, resisting temptation, we'll call it average.

This centrally located B & B is an excellent location for the theaters as well as downtown Stratford. The rooms are typically Edwardian but feel rather dowdy and could definitely be cleaner ( Lots of dust ) . The bathroom was very clean ! The breakfast was OK but not very imaginative and serving time only 8:30 am which could be more flexible . The service from the host including information on Stratford was excellent. I would definitely recommend staying here but it would be nice to see some updating in the future.

As a Christmas present for my boyfriend's parents/aunt we bought them tickets to 42nd Street . As a gift to us, his parents booked us a one night stay at Buckingham House. We were welcomed by Shelley, the owner of the place and also a family friend of my boyfriend's family. The B&B has three bedrooms, each bedroom with their own bathroom which was great. The upstairs consisted of the three bedrooms with a small common area for sitting, reading and watching TV. If you forgot a book, don't worry Shelley has a great selection in her bookcase! Downstairs, there was also a beautiful sitting area inside and a beautiful patio set outside, which we didn't use but hopefully we will when we return!
The breakfast Shelley made was so delicious. Definitely worth waking up for early in the morning. Her cranberry loaf was warm and tasty, and the selection of teas she had went well with it. She definitely enjoys what she does and you can tell with her presentation of the food and her passion in cooking. If only her kitchen was big enough and perhaps she could do cooking classes in the future!
The location of the B&B is in walking distance of the main strip in Stratford and theatres around town. Easy to find and in a safe location! If you are thinking of staying here, don't think about it, just do it and you'll understand why people love it!

We have stayed at several B&Bs and hotels in Stratford. Buckingham House was by far the best combination of comfort, location, and company. Shelley prepared lovely breakfasts, was very attentive to our needs, and made our stay very pleasant. We will return!
