First of all, the service is excellent! They are second to none and I really mean that. The hotel itself is marvellous as a building, but as a hotel it hurts. Plain and simple. Various overhauls have been done since the 1970's but they haven't been forward thinking, and so the place suffers because of it. The guests are less than marvellous, but that is not the hotel's fault. The heating is fabulous; warm radiators that I loved. What I didn't love was the ever-present smell of nicotine and marujana. Again a guest problem, not the hotel. They try.

Loved this building, it's so nostalgic as it's an old Victorian style CN hotel. We had a private hour in the pool/hot tub room and they sanitize/clean between visits with a 30 minute window between each group/family in the pool. The room had a great view of Thunder Bay harbour with the Sleeping Giant very visible beyond the port. Comfortable beds and friendly staff. No breakfast included however there is a McDonalds within walking distance.

Imagine sleeping in the same room as Queen Elizabeth or Johnny Cash or Louis Armstrong? This hotel has many stories to tell and it has held on to its historic look and feel. A perfect view of lake superior and the sleeping giant from your room. Walking distance to the casino and some great restaurants. If you're interested in the history and love hearing stories, then you must speak with the charismatic manager Corey.

We stayed here two nights on our recent Lake Superior trip and we were quite happy with our stay. We had a corner room so had spectacular views over both Sleeping Giant and the downtown area. Rooms were spotless and well stocked (though we didn’t know that there wasn’t going to be in room maid service during COVID. Understandable though) and the bathrooms quite spacious and well kept. The hotel itself has a lot of history and the front desk staff can tell you some of the secrets of the place (like the smuggling tunnels; the bears; the Queen’s bathroom; etc). We would especially like to thank Michael for his tour and the information he provided for our onward trip; it was very help and appreciated. Our one and only complaint for our stay was the distinctive smell of marijuana smoke in the hallway. Some guests were clearly smoking pot in this one room; I wish the hotel took stronger action against them because that was very unpleasant. (And why I am only giving the hotel 4/5 and not 5/5). All in all we would happily stay here again.

The building is a nice historic one, in the heart of downtown Thunder Bay, but could use some updating inside. The lobby looked a little bit sad, and the bathrooms were not the cleanest (i.e. hair left in the shower stall). The staff was very friendly, and the room was nice and large...we just made sure to clean thoroughly as the appearance didn't give off the spotless vibes that are required for today's travelers.
