When first walking up the steps I was really interested in this hostel. It has a great location by Old Montreal and the St. Lawrence, with many cafes and stores nearby. The floorboards make some creaky noise but it is a cute place to stay. The hostel itself is well organized. Each person has their own bed, can label food pantry and fridge bags and is invited to spend time in the "living room" together. There are games, musical instruments, books and a fully-equipped kitchen! Don't forget to bring a blanket if you like layers, as they provide pillowcases and bedsheets. The bathrooms are clean and use disposable towels to dry hands. I haven't tried the showers yet, though you can try your luck with the "free bath supplies/clothes" bins outside of them if you forget your own shampoo. A highlight too is how secure the place is. There are lockers under the beds in the room (bring a locker-style lock) and locks on the room doors.
Overall it's my first time being in this hostel and I am looking forward to what more it offers. It is a nice place to stay in the older part of Montreal and gives solo travellers like me the opportunity to meet new people.

Perfect location, in the heart of the old center. It is possible to know everything on foot and also near the metro station. The night tourist attractions and restaurant are also very close. Clean and safe environment, kitchen equipped with everything!!!
I really ⁇ the fact that I didn't wear shoes inside the hostel. When entering you leave the tennis on the shelf and wear an inner slippers (if you do not have, they offer).
Traveling with my new one, we stayed at this hostel for five nights. Super recommend!!!

The Hostel is very clean and has a lovely cosy common room that's nice to hang out in. The kitchen is fully equipped, has a lot of spices for free use and it's obvious they put a lot of effort into creating a safe space for everyone! Also the staff was always nice and happy to give recommendations for everything:)

My visit to the hostel was great and I’m happy that I was able to be a part of the community of people who live in the hostel. I expected a much dingier place because I’ve heard only mediocre and bad things about hostels but l’Auberge Alternative has everything one might need except for a gym: laundry room, many washrooms, fully equipped kitchen, surrounded by cute (but expensive) cafes and restaurants, a common room with literally anything you could think of that would be entertaining, lockers, decent beds and a great deal of cleanliness.

I would recommend staying here if you are coming to Montréal if just for a bit because it is incredibly cheap at $20/night and absolutely worth the price.

Unresponsive reception after making a reservation through Airbnb, arrived at 10:30pm at night. Check is 3pm to midnight. Door code did not work, contacted the receptionist via text and WhatsApp, no answer. Called Airbnb to enforce a full refund, as which point I got an email confirming that the host canceled. This hostel has a lot of good reviews so I have right to suspect discrimination or racism towards me. As a result and response to the host: I found another place and am quite content but I hope that Airbnb penalizes you for this.

I’ve sent a copy of all your comments and I’m in touch with Airbnb because they see that your story doesn’t hold up and is pure diffamation. They’re about to bill you back :)

Very near to the basilica and old montreal. Consider informing guests their bed number instead of asking to look for their name on the bed -_-" because I have to look at all beds to find my name, and you spelt my name wrong so I was left wondering if that is my bed. The 2 big dorms are actually just partitioned by a thin board so good luck if someone snores. At least the living/kitchen area is spacious and bathroom/showers are decent and plenty.

Great space and the staff are the best! Highly recommend staying here if you’re ever in montreal. They take extra care to make sure the bedrooms and common areas are always clean and comfortable. The kitchen is extremely well stocked and has everything you could need. 10/10

I've been visiting Montreal for 1 month now and stayed at 4 local hostels, all similarly priced. Alternative Hostel of Old Montreal absolutely ranks the best of all. Every night features a communal event, and there is still opportunity to study or handle business affairs, etc. in a quiet living room atmosphere late at night. The hostel is impeccably clean and well maintained. It is an excellent, affordable and hospitable locale, and you will sleep well here. Alternative Hostel of Old Montreal is very well situated near ChinaTown, IGA Groceries, Quartier due Spectacles, and local restaurants and bars in the St. Catherine Ave. and Old Montreal parts of town.
