Such a cool vibe for a hostel! The staff were phenomenal and made sure that everyone felt included and safe, the location is perfect, and the facilities are so cool! 100% would recommend, so many people travelling on their own so it's a great opportunity to meet some new friends!
My visit to the hostel was great and I’m happy that I was able to be a part of the community of people who live in the hostel. I expected a much dingier place because I’ve heard only mediocre and bad things about hostels but l’Auberge Alternative has everything one might need except for a gym: laundry room, many washrooms, fully equipped kitchen, surrounded by cute (but expensive) cafes and restaurants, a common room with literally anything you could think of that would be entertaining, lockers, decent beds and a great deal of cleanliness. I would recommend staying here if you are coming to Montréal if just for a bit because it is incredibly cheap at $20/night and absolutely worth the price.
I have stayed in this auberge more times than I can count. I love the warmth of the staff, the comfortable atmosphere, the art, the architecture and the great location. I have met beautiful people, shared meals, gone for walks through the gorgeous old city and felt the Montréal magic. What I wouldn't give to go back there for a night, a snowfall, the fireworks festival, the comedy festival, another chapter of my life. I encourage anyone thinking of staying here to support this heart and soul act - the world needs more places like this.
I had a lovely time at this hostel and wish I’d stayed longer! Simon and Greg were very helpful and welcoming hosts and take great care of their guests. The bottom bunks have curtains and are lovely, and the lounge is a really comfy, happy communal area. Oh, and wonderful location! Highly rated.
3 long and narrow stairs to office. You need to go to picture 40 on 45 to start seeing the yellow room with 3 x 3 bunk beds. Beds are not easy to get into and stairs of bed are hard on your feet. No space, literally. Small lockers, so useless for suitcases. Beds are shaking at the slightest move. It is hot and the air is bad, even if the windows are open. Almost didn’t sleep. Although the hostel is well located, it is noisy late in the night. Bring ear plugs. The common room is open from 7h to 23. After that, no common room. This is also where the office is, the kitchen, the living room and the dining room. Small and after 23h, no place to talk or meet people. Showers are uncomfortable, small with just one hook. The location is the only positive thing in that place. The price is cheap, but I can get as good price as this at M. I won’t go back. Personal we met are okay, not overtly friendly. You pay breakfast. Booking.com put the best comments at the beginning, so do not trust necessarily what’s written in the beginning of comments. Mine is listed in the 75 to 100! After reading all the comments, I realized that I’m not alone in criticizing this place. Free but not secured WiFi. The answers of the manager of the hostel didn’t please me as he didn’t even answered the serious issues of this hostel. Don’t loose your time and go elsewhere. You will have a lot more for your money’s worth and most of all, you will probably sleep way better.…
We stayed here with our two kids, ages 4 and 7. I was a bit unsure about a hostel experience with them, but it was good. We had a private room with bunk beds and a queen bed. The bunk beds did provide a bit of a challenge though as there is no ladder to climb them, and both ends are open, so I worried about my child sliding off as they are quite high. In the end my husband slept up there and I shared the big bed with one child while the other slept on the bottom bunk. Not ideal, but manageable. The air conditioning worked well (and it was HOT during our stay). The stairs are definitely something to consider if that's an issue for you. We were on the fourth floor. They are steep. The bathrooms were nice, and clean. The common area is stocked with board games (my kids were excited about that), and breakfast was decent (home made muffins, toast, fruit, cereal). Parking was a bit of an issue at Eaton Centre, which was a 20 minute walk away. It was $21 per day. The concern was getting your vehicle trapped in as nearby hotels use it for their valet parking and park cars three deep. So if/when you needed your vehicle you would have to wait for them to move the other cars so you could get yours out. For us this didn't matter until the morning we left as we did all of our exploring on foot. This hostel is easily within walking distance to the Notre Dame, Science Centre, and a nice little board walk with a few vendors, etc. We happened to be there during the international fire works show and could see well enough from there. Wondering around Old Montreal was nice. Very pretty buildings. Relatively expensive food though.…
Location is everything in connection with this hostel: it is right in the middle of Old Montreal, which makes it a perfect place to explore most landmarks of the city. Moreover, it is not that far away from the metro, giving a quick access to the main areas of the modern city. The hostel itself is ok, rooms might be a bit crowded but at least there is A/C. The common area is large, comfortable and nice. Breakfast is served every morning for an accessible price.
This has got to be one of the best hostels we have stayed in around the world. Perfect location for exploring Old Montreal. Awesome, friendly, helpful and interested staff that consistently went the extra mile with assistance and advice. They even put on a free movie night with popcorn, when a bunch of us were staying in on a quiet night. Generously stocked and sized kitchen with large, well appointed common room and great breakfast offered for cheap. Be prepared to walk some steps to your room, and take your shoes off at each landing. Rooms were tidy, with lockers provided to store all your gear. Shared bathrooms were clean and well maintained. Perfect base for exploring a wonderful city.
Location was great. Easy to walk around all the major sightseeing spot. it was super warm in the room, because they didn't have A/C. One fan was definitely not enough to survive hot summer weather for four people in the same room. and bed was very squeaky.
All the usual things were in order, very nice. What I particularly noticed was how fun and easy staff and other guests were to talk to, and most were good with French and English. I also walked around the area at night and found loads of beautiful things to see, and ran into some fun people. Loved it.
