Hôtel Place d'Armes in Old Montreal garners appreciation for its prime location and cleanliness, with guests commending the spotless rooms and quality amenities. While the hotel's atmosphere is described as lively, it's also the source of noise complaints, ranging from street sounds to construction. Despite the buzz, the hotel's rooms offer a blend of old-world charm and contemporary flair.
Service is generally lauded for being warm and professional, yet some guests have experienced occasional lapses. Travelers warn, however, that the hotel may not always provide value for money.

Great location, close to everything. The staff was very kind and professional. The hotel is pretty with rooms without carpets, very popular for dust mite allergy sufferers. On the other hand it is due for a refreshment, a little paint and new tapestry would not be a luxury. The restaurants are excellent

We started planning our wedding by contacting the Hôtel Place d’Armes, a few weeks before the Christmas celebrations. We were looking to have the celebration and reception, in a small group, all in the same place. We had the chance to meet Jessie Kollmorgen who acts as event manager and who took care of our request from the start. During all the months of planning, Jessie was extremely professional: between budget questions and the general organization of the event, she was very attentive, quick to answer our questions and provided us with several excellent suggestions.
We chose to celebrate the event on the St-Laurent Terrace and have the reception in Brasserie 701. Our group being rather small, we did not have to privatize the restaurant and that is what we wishes: take advantage of the atmosphere of the restaurant to add to the festive spirit of our guests.
When the big day arrived, the staff was of unexpected help to facilitate the proceedings: taking care of placing the decorations with the help of some of our guests, directing the guests, coordinating the start of the celebration as well as several others small details. Everything was perfect and we felt like we could just enjoy the moment. We even had a video screening which had not been planned in advance and the hotel spontaneously organized a small room for us to view everything, in complete privacy, with our guests.
The St-Laurent Terrace is just perfect for an intimate celebration. If the sun is out, it’s even better! We used little decoration because the place is already magnificent and the hotel installs a little greenery as well as beautiful triangular canvases to embellish and shelter from the sun. The hotel provides chairs for rental at a very low cost, which will be installed for you the same day. We also had the cocktail party there and the hotel sets up small bar tables, which adds to the decor. The staff were really professional and attentive when it came to handling the canapes and cocktail service. The pace was perfect and no one missed anything until it was time to go to the restaurant.
And what about Brasserie 701? This restaurant is just magnificent in itself! We had planned a certain number of decorative items in order to bring out the special character of the event without overwhelming the place, while respecting the other guests. Again, the restaurant staff took care of installing all our decorations and the results even exceeded my expectations! Throughout the evening, the pace of service was perfect, both for the dishes and for the wine. The choices we made were appreciated by everyone and the quality was there.
We also chose to take a suite, in the hotel, for the occasion and again, everything was perfect! Fresh flowers and a bottle of sparkling wine awaited us in our room to mark the event. Our suite, decorated with a brick wall, was magnificent and offered us a view of the city center where we could see the sky in the colors of the sunset.
Our overall experience with Hôtel Place d’Armes and Brasserie 701 was absolutely extraordinary and far beyond our expectations. We would like to thank the team who took care of us and our group on September 22, 2023.
A huge thank you to all the staff at the establishment for helping to make this day an unforgettable one.

We stayed at PDA for 5 nights on our repatriation trip to Canada. Overall it was great. Very friendly check-in and assistance, perfect location if you want to see Old Montreal and the rooms are charming and adequate.
Check-in was smooth and very friendly. This is important for us as it sets the mood of your stay. The doorman was great and attentive and even gave us great advice about where to go during our stay.
The room was spacious, well decorated, has 12-13 ft ceilings. It was very charming and the bed was very comfortable. Room service and cleaning was good but they could do a bit better to remove used glasses. We stayed in the 4th building which is a bit more modern and spacious. We highly recommend this building.
The 3 restaurants in PDA are Brasserie 701, Kyo and the PDA Terrasse. We have tried all 3 and, the 701 and Kyo are amazing. Perhaps better for winter as there patios are way too close to traffic and sterol, but inside they are very appealing. The terrace is not that good and bit of a let down, we were expecting a fancier European vibe based on what you paid.
The lobby of PDA really provides a warm and relaxed work experience. We spent 1 day working from the lobby and besides a few cleaning staff interruptions (They literally will vacuum over your feet if you don’t move them), it was great.
Overall, price for experience.. We would stay again.

Overall, we had an OK stay at this hotel. But there would be problems to fix in this hotel for the stay to be better.
First, hotel is situated in a noisy part of the city. We are Quebecers so we knew this part of the city would be noisy, and we are used to noise. We come to Montreal often. We knew BUT we had the room with a balcony, and we unfortunately could barely sit on it because of the noise from the multiple construction sites around the hotel at the moment as well as a yoga place just in front which has the loudest generators I’ve ever heard, who is on from 9am to 10pm. Us and multiple other guests had to ask for ear plugs to sleep because of this generator. It is not the hotel’s fault, but I think that they should state on their website that there are multiple construction sites nearby, just so we are aware. We did not know and could not get our money’s worth for the balcony (we chose this particular room for that). The rooms were not soundproof enough for all the noise around the hotel.
The hotel is well placed for walking. We were however disappointed about the cleanliness in the room we had. (Lots of dust on the desk in entrance, lots of hair on the ground upon our arrival, coffee machine not washed before our arrival and was dirty…). I work in hospitality and this would not pass for me, especially for what this hotel claims to be and the price I paid for the room.
There was also a mix-up for our room, at the check-in, the reception lady was confused as to why we were in that room, saying it says it is unoccupied in her system. She however brushed that situation aside. She seemed to think that was ok and didn’t change anything about this situation. This, however, caused problems with the cleaning service (cleaning service tried to enter our room multiple times because they thought it was empty, since it was written so in their system) and with room service (it took over an hour to arrive to our room. It was also crazy expensive for some reason).
Overall, I understand that one of these problems are not the hotel’s fault, it’s just normal for Montreal. But it would be great to state warnings about it on your website. Overall, comfortable bed, amazing bathroom. The room was spacious. But I do not think this hotel deserves to be in the best hotels in canada, I stayed at the Hilton in same location before and had a better stay with less troubles. I don’t think I will return.

Hi U3868BValiciab, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered during your stay. We regret that the noise from nearby construction and generators affected your experience, and we appreciate your suggestion about providing more transparency on our website regarding these potential disturbances. We are also sorry to hear about the cleanliness issues and the check-in mix-up. This is not the standard we strive for, and we will address your comments with our housekeeping and front desk teams to ensure improvements are made. We appreciate your insights and understand your concerns. We value your feedback, and we hope you might reconsider and give us another chance in the future.

I agree with the reviews that complain about the noise. We are right across the street from a bar that did not wind down until 4:00 am. The music is loud, the crowds of people spill onto the sidewalk and are really noisy. It was impossible to sleep. Also, concur with the generator that runs all day until 10:00 pm. The windows are large but not insulated so you hear everything going on outside. No, the hotel cannot be held responsible for this but a heads-up is required so that a room change can be made.
We ate lunch in the bistro. The food was very good but the service poor - slow and inattentive. Room service later in the evening proved to be a better experience.
The room itself is spacious and airy with high ceilings and a lovely brick wall. The internet is poor as are the tv options.
The shower is old and mouldy. The little bottles of complimentary shampoo etc. are nearly impossible to open. Other than that, the room was quite clean.
The hotel is well placed for walking to various shops, restaurants and attractions but the lack of sleep due to the late-night noise takes away from this convenience.
For $1,000/night we would definitely not stay here again.

Stayed in a "Deluxe Room, 1 Queen Bed", this was in the newer part of the building I believe. Room was modern, good size, clean and quiet. They had the usual television channels, but its possible to connect firestick etc to back of screen for your own options. Housekeeping were very good, asking if we needed anything if we bumped in to them. Toiletries were from Le Labo which was pleasant surprise.
Location is great for old town and we had fun going to the nearby metro and entering the underground network (RÉSO Underground City) and walking all the way underground down to Eaton Centre (You might only want to do this once). However we did find ourselves getting taxis when going further than old town due to the snow, if summer then could walk most places. I would stay at this hotel again.

While I would agree about most of the positive remarks about this hotel we experienced a very noisy evening with a wedding reception below. A very loud and constant beat. We are unable to sleep while this was going on. You can't control what occurs outside, you can within the hotel. A four star hotel with knowledge of this issue should not make this room available when they have a noisy event below. We did enjoy the rest of our stay but no one should have to endure the noise we were subject to when it could have been avoided.

They could not have been kinder for a birthday celebration, a split of Champagne delivered to the room. Room was very comfortable and simple in aesthetic which felt calming. Concierge services were superb, tickets to a boat ride and an interesting dinner recommendation. We enjoyed drinks on the terrace, one breakfast in with good eggs Benedict, and supper at the kyo, where service was good but the Sushi was boring. All in all a job very well done and I hope to return.

We found this hotel online and booked it based on location, great reviews, and price. We used our CAA membership for a discount and this also entitled us to complimentary breakfast. Right upon arrival we were impressed. We were greeted by the valent Carl who was very warm and welcoming. Our room was not ready so Carl gave us a map and made suggestions of where to walk and where to go for a bite to eat. He also gave us a subway map to help us get to the hockey game the next night. When our room was ready the front desk let us know that we had a room upgrade - we didn't know why nor did we know what the difference was, but the room was great - an upgraded King room. The room was spacious, clean, had an electric fireplace, a desk, and a lounge chair. The washroom had a large walk in shower. The hotel is well located a short walk to everything you want to see in Old Montreal. The valet desk provided us with an umbrella on rain days and bottled water to keep us hydrated on our walks. One night Carl the valet drove us to dinner as it was raining. The concierge Dennis (concierges are a rarity these days) booked a dinner reservation for us. The complimentary breakfast was very nice - the restaurant has a nice ambiance and the food was fresh, constantly replenished and there was a lovely selection of fresh fruit. The hotel itself was so nice. They had a few lounges, one of which had a pool table and large screen tv. Unfortunately we had to cut our trip short by one day as one of us came down with Covid but the hotel was very accommodating and did not charge us for the last night. This hotel is not the cheapest but between the location, ambiance and incredible service it is well worth every penny.

Whoever renovated this hotel killed what could have otherwise been a lovely and historic space. The interior is like a Hampton Inn with rooms and public spaces that are spare, furniture that is cheap and uncomfortable, and completely incongruous decor. The 2 restaurants are pleasant and the hotel service is good, but there is nowhere in the Place d'Armes that you would want to spend any real time, including the rooms. Hopefully, someone will see the potential for the space and do a proper renovation, but until then, sadly the Hotel Place d'Armes is best enjoyed from the exterior.

Hello stevef265,
thank you for your question; Here are your choices from YUL to Hotel Place d'Armes on a Tuesday at 5:30 PM: There is a shuttle called the 747 which has a designated bus lane through most of the way here. It costs $12/person - tickets purchased through a machine on the Ground Transportation level of YUL. The downside is that its closest stop to the Hotel is 4 blocks away. Otherwise, taxis are readily available at Ground Transportation level at a fixed cost of $41. and then there is always the UBER option where prices vary.
Please let us know if there's anything else we can do for you.
We look forward to welcoming you to Hotel Place d'Armes for your anniversary.
Sorry William, I do not know. We were too busy exploring Montreal to watch any TV except for the news. Great staff at the Hotel so am sure they will be able to answer all your questions.
