I haven't stayed in a hostel in well over 30 years. My travelling companion suggested we reserve at a hostel to make the most of our travel budget. Samesun Montreal was perfect. We had a suite with two beds & private bath that was very clean, and well appointed. The staff were pleasant and helpful. A good breakfast is included, and the cafe area is a nice place to spend some time. The location is central and on the subway line. I highly recommend this hostel for older folks like myself. It did not disappoint.

This hostel has a lovely downstairs which is closer to hotel than hostel.

Very close to one of the most connected subway stations in Montreal which made it easy for us to get just about anywhere we wanted to go.

The staff were friendly and the room was very clean. I'll be returning here!

It was good for the most part. The room was clean and the beds are comfortable enough, and they have curtains for privacy (I slept in a 4 bed mixed dorm). The staff was quite friendly, especially the girl that was there in the morning, and there was a decent selection for breakfast.

The one thing that made my stay pretty miserable was that the room was insanely hot, especially on the top bunk which I had to take because I was the last guest in the room to arrive. I found a thermostat but when I tried to turn it down, it wouldn't change. So I didn't really get much sleep because I don't sleep well in such high heat. Still I give it 4 stars because seems like a pretty decent place aside from the extreme temperature in the room.

There is a lot to improve in this hostel. As a guest if you want to do a laundry you better go to the laundromat at 5min walking otherwise you'll have to pay 11$ to let them do it for you but you can be sure that they will say something about you on your back.
The kitchen is very small and the fridge disgusting and full of staff's stuff so no space for you, you'll need to use the fridge in your room. The sink is always dirty and there is always dishes drying or dry but not put back on the self.
They have an activity board but don't run them plus there is no sign up sheet so obviously you can't sign up. I've also been told by a staff member that it is up to you (the guest) to ask for the activity.
A hostel should be fun, having activities, staff members should be great communicant. Just one of them let you having fun times because he actually talk to you..
I would not recommend to stay there especially if you are a solo traveler.

Thank you for your comments. We'll take note of your thoughts about the laundry. However, people tend to consider our laundry service a fair deal. While they'd have to stay in the laundromat and wait for their clothes to wash, we offer the service for around the same price, but allowing them to go out and explore the city while we take care of it (wash, dry and fold). In a communal kitchen like in any hostel, it is everyone's duty to wash their dishes and help put the plates and utensils back in place. Our staff do clean after the guests every now and then to ensure the kitchen environment is still pleasant. We're sorry that it wasn't pleasant enough for you and we will try to improve communication between staff and guests about this. During low season, it is hard for us to provide as much activities as we would want since it is a small hostel and the occupancy is low. We do offer free pasta nights, Mario Kart nights, beer pong, pub crawls, and evenings at the bar. Whenever there are enough sign ups for the activities that need sign-up, we do run them. Our lobby/bar area is created to ease connections and new interactions between solo travelers like you and we're glad you made friends during your stay. We want to make sure you understand that raising your voice on our well-intentioned staff and guests doesn't provide a good experience for no one. Everyone should feel comfortable while still respecting the others. This of course breaks the friendly atmosphere we're trying to create with great efforts. Thank you for your understanding, and have a nice trip.

I booked this Hostel/ Hotel becuase of the centralized location and cost. But my husband and I had a bad expereince that cheapened our experience and honeymoon. The hotel does not have quiet hours, meaning we had people in the rooms around us knocking on doors at 4:30am and 6am and talking very loudly and giggling. When we alerted the front desk, they did nothing and did not seem to care. Breakfast was toast, bagels and eggos so not very filling and sometimes room service would just forget to do your room even when you asked.
If you're looking for a cheep central location this works. But be warned about not sleeping.

This was my 1st time staying at the Samesun Hostel in Montreal. It was a nice change from the other hostel that I usually stayed at. I had a nice private room with a double bed and my own washroom and shower. The location is great next to Berri-UQAM Metro. This is very central it is an interchange station. Also, you can easily walk to Old Montreal as well and around downtown. I made use of the kitchen which is great way to save money. My only complaint is that there were no tea towels to dry dishes and put them away. The drying rack gets stacked with too many dishes that need putting away to have space. Also, the kitchen is smaller than usual for hostels. One has to try and find a spot to store food on the shelves and in the fridge.

The breakfast was not too bad. I just wish the orange juice was not watered down. Also, I can understand why there was limited breakfast items due to grocery prices being higher now. Things like eggs and more fruit would be nice. It was nice to have apples at least for fruit.

They have really good beer from Boréale which is local from Quebec. The bar tender was very friendly when we chatted briefly one night. Thank you Samesun Hostel for a wonderful week in Montreal. I would consider staying with you again next time I return.

The hostel is a clean place to stay and the bathrooms are clean. the upstairs rooms are better then the basement rooms. the basement rooms are a dark but clean. the hostel has a lobby where they serve alcohol to the wee hours of the night. so its a total bonus. they have a cool terrace you can sit outside. there is a bunch of mixed travelers that come here. never had any issue. the staff is great as well. thanks for the nice stay! cons. There is a Mac store to grab booze down the street and its outside the subway station so very convenient to arrive from airport or train station. its walking distance to downtown st catherines or the port. about 15-20 min walk. they also have a nice patio at the back of the facility

I really enjoyed my stay at Samesun. The staff is very friendly and they also had a small get together for hostel occupants with the staff on one of the days. Great vibes and everyone is very kind. I would highly recommend staying here especially if you want to have the accessibility of commuting to various attractions in the city.

Honestly, I think they could do much better. First impression when entering the place is that it looks old and smells dirty. Rug in the lobby is all stained and the dirty odor is strong.

Rooms are pretty standard (not to say old) and the mattresses are very uncomfortable as well.

Great location. Bus to the airport and subway lines minutes away. Supermarket and restaurants near by too. 2 metro stops from old Montreal.
Room was basic. Good shower and small fridge. Mattresses need to be changed though. Breakfast basic but good enough althogh once muffins run out you are out of luck.
Friendly staff but not very good at solving problems. We had ants in our room and asked for it to be cleaned. We specifically asked for the room to be sprayed and cleaned. They sprayed for the ants but nobody cleaned the room as we asked. After complaining about the room not being cleaned we were offered a change to 2 single rooms. Not a good option when you travel together as a couple so we didn't take them.

How should we get there from the airport?
Answer from SamesunMontreal
Montreal, Canada1 helpful vote
Hi there! There are two options from the airport to the hostel. A cab ride will usually cost around $40, or you can take the Airport Shuttle. The 747 Airport shuttle is $10, you can buy a ticket at the airport, or get on directly with $10 in coins. It will drop you off at Berri-UQAM, which is a 2 minute walk from the hostel. Both rides take 40-60 minutes depending on traffic. Both options are available 24hrs. Hope this helps!
