I was traveling with three teenagers and my priority was to stay as close as possible to the action without breaking my budget. Atypique was perfect in this regard. While the rooms are tiny with little surface area for laying out belongings, the ability to walk out the door and be right in the shadow of the Hôtel de Ville made it all worth it. The kids weren't looking for amenities other than the ability to stream Netflix at night- which they were readily able to do. The staff was helpful and aided me in extended our stay an extra night, but most of your transactions with the hotel can be done automatically or without any human interaction. The kitchen got crowded at times, but it was nice to be able to get some free coffee and little cereal for the teens before going out on our adventures. I was able to park nearby for three nights for a total of $49 CAD. It was also easy to park temporarily in front of the hotel for loading and unloading.

I would never recommend this place to my parents who would struggle with the raised bed and the stairs and the kiosk check-in, but for younger, budget-minded travelers who want to stay where the action is, this is a good option for up to 3 nights.

Hello, I wanted to try this Inn concept which is intuitive and autonomous. So, few staff at lower cost. I went there with the idea of meeting other travelers and sharing (common places) while having my small intimate place (Japanese room). The location is excellent and the cost is very attractive. For a place like this to work well, you have to make sure that everything around the customer works. For example, I received a text to inform me that my room was ready. When I arrived, it wasn't. An employee recommended that I lock my suitcase and return later. When I returned, there was no employee, but she had explained the concept of independence to me. So I tried to get my room through the check-in terminal, but it didn't work. Luckily, the employee had explained to me what to do in case of problems, but there is no sign telling the client what to do. Some of them must have gone around in circles. The room is as described. cute and small. I do not recommend it for 2 people because you can not be 2 standing at the same time. For me, who was alone, it suited me and I had pleasures figuring how to lower the bed from the ceiling. There are 2 well-appointed terraces, but no one uses them. On the terraces of the 2nd floor, it is not possible to access the 2nd floor because the door does not recognize our magnetic card. A client came to me with an exasperated look. For the kitchen, there is everything to make a meal. If you want to bring a small grocery store and cook yourself a steak it's possible. What is provided are essentials, bread, groats, cereal, egg, milk, coffee and apples. Yet the guests I met did not understand the concept and were angry and disappointed to have chosen this Pension. There is still a significant problem, there is not enough dishes to serve 30 rooms. I saw 4 worms, 2 cups and about 5 plates. Moreover, customers do not understand that they have to do their own dishes. So it's messy and the sinks are filled with dirty dishes. I helped two people find a spoon so they could eat their cereal. The cereal dispenser does not work, so people open the top lid and get it straight with their hands. The coffee machine was broken, which didn't help with people's mood. For the check-out, I had to help a customer q

I visited Quebec to write, and Atypiq was perfect for my stay. The location of course is ideal for visiting the historic sites, and the kitchen common area gives you a change of scenery from your room if you choose to stay inside on a snowy day. The room itself is very useful, converting from bed to sitting area, and the splash of art in the bathroom gives it personality. The coffee downstairs is also a great plus! I would be very glad to stay here again.

While I’ve been a lifelong advocate for minimal design, the room my wife and I occupied was far too small for comfort. Once the bed was lowered into position, the adjoining wall was so close—about 4"— that the only to get in or out was to crawl over the foot of the bed. The wash basin in the bathroom was so tiny that it was very difficult to spit water out after brushing your teeth without setting your feet or spraying the wall. Once the bed was in position, the small padded bench, a potential seat, was not available for use. The sliding door to the toilet area stuck so could not be fully closed or retracted. The one chair in the room could not be used either: it served as the support for one backpack. (Forget suitcases: room 018 has insufficient space to accommodate them).

The communal kitchen is a nice concept but in practice left much to be desired. Were we supposed to wash our own dishes or let them pile up in the sink? I saw no signage that answered my question. Since there was no attendant, this wasn’t clear. The single-service peanut butter, jam, etc, is environmentally quite wasteful, contradicting one principle of minimalism.

Overall, my impression is that the business model of Atypica is not atypical at all: maximize profit by squeezing as many beds as possible into the building footprint while simultaneously minimizing staffing costs.

We stayed here for one night. The location is very good; Quebec is a walkable city and this is just round the corner from the main area. However, the check in email received the day before our stay said we could check in from 2pm, but when we got there the room wasn't ready. They said they'd text us when it was so we went out and came back at 3.30pm - still not ready. At 4pm, we asked again and were given the key!

The room - our room was between the lift and the stairs, not ideal and we asked to be moved but they said there were no other rooms available. It was (as expected) tiny and once the bed is lowered, there is no space to sit and hardly any space to walk. There is nowhere to hang anything or even to put suitcases. The sink was so small we couldn't wash in it without banging against either the wall or the soap dispenser. The shower was good and everything was clean.

Breakfast - this area reminded us of a youth hostel; basic. Because there is only a member of staff on duty between 12 noon and 8pm, if anything runs out there is no one to replace it or make sure the area stays clean.

For the price we paid we expected better than this.

Make sure you read the website and online reviews so you really know before you go - it really is an atypical experience.
The best things about it are the location is fabulous (in Vieux Quebec) and the facility/room seems very clean and modern. However, you have to understand it's basically a hostel (with a hotel price). The room is VERY small and when you bring the bed down from the ceiling, there really isn't a lot of room to move around. The bathroom was almost as big as the main room, but let's just say the sliding door doesn't create much "privacy" so if you're travelling as a couple, you might want to put on a set of headphones to keep the romance alive. There's no parking available on-site, but there is reasonably priced underground parking available a short walk away. I would stay here again, but likely only for a night or two.

I have stayed several times at hotel Atypiq. I keep coming back because the location is perfect, the staff is there if you need them but gives you complete privacy otherwise, with a self check-in option. The view from the room is perfect, and after adventuring through the snow outside the latte machine in the kitchen is also perfect. The fox art in the room is also charming.

Excellent location and staff very helpful. Now the not-so-good news: room was postage-size & the bed is pulled down from the ceiling. Air conditioner leaked onto carpet, so for our 2nd & 3rd night, staff moved us to another room. There, the shower leaked from the door and from the side wall onto the floor. Didn't bother to tell staff as didn't want to move again. Only 1 plastic chair in the room, and an ottoman to sit on. No counter space beside a VERY tiny corner sink. Only 2 floors in thishotel, and the tiny elevator is EXTREMELY slow ... at least 1 min. to go 2 floors. Not at all what we expected from reading the website, but again, the location is excellent.

Dear TOfoodlover, Thank you for your comment. Be sure that the problem about the AC is solved. About the room, the concet is to maximizing all available space. With a single touch of a button, the bed will descend from the ceiling into the sleeping position. Unfold the bedding and prepare to drift off to dreamland. In Day Mode, raise it to the ceiling to take advantage of all the available space. Unfold the table to play cards, work calmly or write eagerly about your day of discovery in Quebec City.

Everything was 10 minutes away from the bonhomme carnival, shopping and restaurants.

There were lots of noises at night though. Water in pipes every half hour, electrical sounds and blowing from the A/C unit which was off as well as other unidentified noises which kept me up all night and woke my daughter up scared a couple of times.

The room was very small. the bed came from ceiling which saved space but also meant that when my daughter went to sleep at 8pm, I had to sit in bed in the dark for the rest of my night...

The air was smelled stale, especially since it was a small room. The window could not open so our wet boots and snow pants and jackets were making the air stinky and wet without an option to air anything out.

The common room was amazing with all things you need to cook your own meals and included basics like bread, butter, eggs, cereal and milk (no non dairy options though).

We received a free night's stay with this hotel in a prestige box. We decided to take an additional night. Very nice location close to all tourist attractions. The room was small and the walls were not very soundproof, but overall, the efficiency of moving the bed up and down and also the places everywhere to place our personal belongings was good. The shower was nice, but as soon as you turned on the water, it flowed all over the floor. The staff was very nice and the shared kitchen was good.
