We received a warm welcome upon arrival and this prevailed for the duration of our stay.
The hotel is well placed within Vieux-Québec and seemed to be within easy walking distance of everything.
You'd probably describe it as a 'boutique' style of hotel.
Unluckily for us, our room was located on L5 (top floor). A tip for new arrivals would be to consider using the stairs as the lift may just be the slowest in Québec, and possibly the slowest in North America. Having said that, it is very quiet which is something to look forward to when it eventually arrives.
Our room was compact, but there is enough space for luggage and people if you're organised. We found it clean and well appointed and the beds were pretty good compared to some of the others we encountered along the way. We were pleasantly surprised when we saw the spa in our room and openly speculated about the possibilities that a spa in our room opened up to us however, we were ultimately left a little disappointed as the spa had only two settings, on or off which resulted in a substantial amount of water exiting the spa, catching us by surprise and distracting us from the main purpose of getting into the spa in the first place. It wasn't all bad though, you can fill the spa with water and it stays in the spa provided you don't jiggle around too much.
No tea or coffee was provided in room but you can help yourself to the coffee machine adjacent to the reception counter on the ground floor. And it's proper coffee too. Not that filtered rubbish.
All the staff were friendly and helpful and they resisted the temptation to tease us about our poor "le français", well, to our faces at least...

If we ever come back to Québec, and I hope we do, we would stay again at Le Champlain Hotel. And if you're planning to visit, first try to get a room at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac but if you can't, we can recommend the Le Champlain. 4 Stars.

Room Tip: The spa is a nice touch but some power settings would be a useful addition.

Bonjour Extraordinary588012, We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at our property and we thank you for sharing your experience on Trip Advisor. We are happy that you found the accommodations to be comfortable and clean, and that you enjoyed our complimentary lobby coffee bar. From the sound of your jaccuzzi tub experience, it sounds as if the water level was low when you opened the jets. Do not hesitate to ask the reception for assistance! We are pleased that you would choose our property on a future visit, and we look forward to welcoming you once again.

Old town location is perfect, within 10-15 minute walk of all attractions and great restaurants. Great complimentary coffee. Clean and well taken care of hotel, very tight but clean room.
We did not receive anticipated room upgrade, ours was a basic room with squeaky metal queen bed and noisy A/C. Hotel parking was not available for us but no big deal - underground city parking lot is just a 5 minute walk.
We would stay here again, because of location. We absolutely loved Quebec City, it is gorgeous!

The location was perfectly centered within the old city walls. We were able to walk easily to all the shops, restaurants and attractions. The hotel was clean with a large room that had 2 queen beds, big bathroom and an incredible view of the Chateau Frontenac. We didn't eat the breakfast, although it smelled great each morning. We did have access each day to a cappuccino maker that was amazing. The staff was very helpful, printing out boarding passes and covid test results for our flights back to the US. We'll definitely stay here again!

There was an elevator, but it seemed a bit rickety on our first use so we instead chose to walk the 3 flights each day to our room. We honestly didn't mind as the steps weren't that steep and the exercise was a great way to counter all of the delicious meals we had in Quebec City!

The junior suite was a nice size, the bed was comfy, and the view was pretty. We had no noise issues, neither within the hotel or from the neighbourhood, it’s on a quiet side street right in Old Quebec - perfect location!

Definitely appreciated the parking, although I’m very glad we took the small car.

The room was a little shabby, stained carpet, mould in the bathroom, decor that seemed like an assembly of randomly purchased surplus items from a liquidation sale. The bathroom was super small! The lack of coffee maker was something we came prepared for, we brought our own, but it was a pain to unpack the car because the elevator was extremely slow.

We were told at check in that we had to notify the front desk before noon any day that we wanted housekeeping. Any time we stopped at the desk to make this request it seemed like we were bothering the staff or otherwise doing something wrong.

The electrical in the room was kinda scary. There were several light switches that didn’t do anything and the fireplace switches were backward (off was on, on was off) and my husband got a shock (big flash, loud bang) off the fireplace.

We let the front desk know about the arcing fireplace, they again seemed annoyed but said they’d call maintenance. When we returned a couple hours later, maintenance had turned the fireplace on high and the furnace was cranked to 29 degrees Celsius. The room was boiling!

We didn’t say the room was cold, didn’t mention a problem with the furnace, just wanted to let them know the fireplace electrocuted my husband. Not sure why they cranked the heat to tropical levels.

Sadly, and unexpectedly we found a very banal hotel in Old Quebec, lacking the elegance of its neighbourhood. The lobby is tiny and often crowded (expect to queue to check out while the minimal staff answers the phone for new reservations).
A loud music in the common spaces certainly contributes to the overall lack of elegance.
In times of covid, breakfast is delivered at the door in a paper bag : it contains a very average croissant, juice, and apple sauce, all packaged in plastic containers, with plastic ustensils (not exactly envrionment-friendly). To get coffee, you need to go through the musical lobby and queue at the unique coffee machine.
The room we had in the old buiding was ok, although the bathroom clerly needs some renovation (old and stained bathtub).
It was OK for an overnight stay in Quebec. For a longer stay, there are better options, including ouside Old Quebec.

My family and I stayed here for our first night of a week long holiday in Quebec. From the moment we entered, we were disappointed. The staff at the front desk acknowledged us, only after prying themselves away from their cell phones. I noticed that the amount we were being charged was in excess of what we were originally quotes in an email, so I questioned the charge. The girls argued that prices are subject to change so I asked for a manager. The manager came and explained that the girls were new hires and granted us the price we were originally quoted, but upon an attempt to reverse the charge on my credit card, rang the charge in 2 more times, so I now had 3 charges on my credit card totalling about $1200. The manager said I would need to call my bank. I called my bank who advised that until the transaction is posted, there was nothing they could do and the hotel would need to deal with it first. The hotel manager then said by midnight everything should be cleared off the card. This didn't end up being the case. To make a long story short, 7 days, various excuses by hotel management and several angry phone calls later, the charges were removed from my card. We ended up getting the night stay free of charge for all of the aggravation their error caused. The second issue that we had with this hotel, is while it is central to many tourist attractions, they advertise that the hotel is pet friendly, however, the hotel is located in the middle of a street where there is no place for dogs to go to the washroom without walking a distance. We would never recommend this hotel to anyone, as there are many other options in the area with basic rooms like we had that care about their customers' satisfaction.

Excellent location! The front desk staff and manager were most accommodating I arrived at about 12:30 on a Saturday hoping to leave my bag to join my walking tour at 1:30. Instead, I was allowed to check in and get settled in my spacious room. The bedding was top notch and the bed was very comfortable. The continental breakfast was a bonus! They even have a self serve wine dispenser with 8 options that can be used by purchasing a card at the front desk. While it may not have a lobby like the Fairmount, it also doesn't cost $ 590 US I would definitely stay at Le Champlain again.

Great room: big with beautiful views. Great location. Due to Covid, a cold breakfast is delivered in a paper bag outside your room door and coffee is available from a machine in the lobby. Lots of food and great if included in the room rate, but I wouldn’t pay for it. The biggest disappointment was that even though they clearly state masks must be worn at all times in the hotel, many staff members did not wear masks (or at least not consistently) and nothing was done to ensure that guests wore masks (many didn’t). I’ll go back but can’t recommend this hotel while there is a pandemic.

Great location - just 3 blocks from the beautiful Le Chateau Frontenac and amazing views of the river. Just 2 blocks away from the hotel are a number of lovely outdoor cafe's. One block away is a cool water display, lit up at night.

We arrived on a cruise boat and hiked up the VERY steep hills of old Quebec. Would highly recommend anyone else to take the Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec, costing only $4 one way. Unfortunately we found out about it after the exhausting 45 min. hike. Staff was very attentive, especially Alexandra, who realizing that we were about to pass out after lugging our luggage on a humid day, granted us early access to our room.

We had Room 40 - nice view, very spacious, with 2 comfortable beds, nice bathroom, with fridge. In the lobby was a wine dispenser machine, a very nice touch. We had an early flight so they gave us a nice continental breakfast bag to go. Would highly recommend this hotel!

Worst hotel ever: I was there on a business trip for 4 nights. When I got in my room, the smell of mold was so overwhelming that I immediately opened a window. Quebec city’s hotels were all booked and I spend hours trying to find a new one to no avail. Meanwhile, the hotel ask me to vacate the room for 4 hours so they could filter the air 😬. If you own a machine for it, it is because you know you have a problem. When I called the manager to ask for a refund, he was extremely condescending and laughed at me. I left early. The only good point was an acceptable cappuccino and friendly front desk staff.

Hello, Thank you for choosing the Hôtel Champlain for your last visit to Québec. We understand your situation and we are empathetic with your discomfort with the service we have given you. I'd like to address this comment, starting by stating that all of our rooms are thoroughly cleaned and inspected afterwards. The new inspection carried out in your room during your stay and subsequent cleaning occurred as a result of your complaint and we carried it out in your absence, as you requested. We own machines that allow deep cleaning because our hotel must be prepared at all times to provide a response to most of your requests. While we understand the you may not agree with our rooms and services, we complied to verify the situation and, given your discomfort, we offered a fair discount to the 1st night that you stayed with us (which we made), approved by the Direction of the company. A full refund wasn't approved, and we informed you of our decission with courtesy. The company officially denies any and all accusations stated on this commentary that our management 'was extremely condescending and laughed' at your request. Don't hesitate to contact us should you have any more questions or informations you want to share. Kind regards.
