My partner and I fly with the Blades Flight Club very frequently and driving from Exeter, Devon requires that we stay overnight or mostly two nights here. From an aviation point of view this is like staying in a museum with so many great memories all over the walls. The famous pilot Douglas Bader officially opened the aviation themed restaurant and a wall plaque records that historical date.

The staff here are all very friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. They serve both inside the restaurant and outside which has a brilliant view of this well kept aerodrome. It is difficult to find another restaurant bar that has a Spitfire and other great warbirds parked right in front of you. Some days you even get a private air display from the Blades Aerobatic Team who are also based at Sywell. It is a truly unique location where you can quite happily sit and watch the days activities. The bar area is another lovely location for meeting friends and you never know who you might be sitting next to in terms of pilots or general aircrew. If you love aviation this is the place to spend quality time. Even if you don't music from the period and the lovely old furniture will make you feel right at home.

The menu is pretty simple however the quality is very good and the bar is well stocked.

The themed hotel rooms provides you with a feeling of staying back in the period of the golden days of aviation with comfortable beds, tv, bath/shower facilities and tea/coffee drinks.

I love the 30's style, with that classy art deco look, but usually the buildings of the period are now dated or have been filled with the type of pastiche where the interior designers just haven't got a clue ...... Not at the Aviator though, it's like stepping back in time, everything is spotless and brand new but in perfect art deco style, the only giveaway is the modern plumbing and flat screen TV, the rooms are also spacious and the bed comfortable. We arrived early evening, opened a bottle of fizz and listened to Glen Miller whilst watching the planes at the Aerodrome opposite.

We booked to stay at the Aviator as we had booked a drive in a supercar that took place at the airfield adjacent to the hotel. From the moment we arrived we were treated fantastically by all of the staff from the receptionist Jo down to all of the staff in the restaurant and bar areas. The hotel, having been built in the 1930s has kept all of its Art Deco styling and though I'm sure not all of it is original but Agatha Christie would not feel out of place here. The room was clean, comfortable and warm and accessed by the most fabulous art deco foyer. The menu in the restaurant although smaller than usual due to the covid situation was a smaller choice but none the less very good. Given the covid situation we felt very safe with the hand sanitizer and track and trace procedures in place and the safe being very on the ball asking those residents who were not wearing mask to politely but firmly asking to put one on(and so they should!!)
We had a lovely time and will most definitely return again for a stay.

Booked for business trip, as web site offered everything I needed. Arrived - no evening meals, no offer of discount as web site only said evening meals were not served on Sundays, not all week!! False advertising. Wifi is the slowest I have had since dial-up, IT IS NOT HIGH SPEED.. False advertising. Chairs in room must be the cheapest plastic chairs possible. Trying to phone reception from room, which is not in the accommodation building, and room phone does not work. If you just want a bed, clean and comfortable, anything else - don't bother

What an absolutely amazing hotel. We stayed for one night and what a treat. The hotel is Art Deco themed right down to the last detail with an aviation theme. The food was absolutely delicious and extremely good value for money. The home made lamb pie and biscoff cheesecake will take some beating. And the breakfast was just as good. The waitress who served us both on Saturday evening and for breakfast was very professional and a great asset to the hotel, both informative and interesting. Telling us about all the events held there and genuinely interested in where she worked. Thanks. We will be back as soon as we can!

Stayed here with family for my dad’s birthday present. An amazing refurbished art deco hotel. Even the music in the background was from the era. All it needed was Poirot coming in to ‘solve the case.’ Lots of plane themes in hotel too as it’s on the Sywell airfield. There is a small aviation museum there too. Free to visit when its open.
Stayed in a superior room, very spacious and comfortable. My dad stayed in a standard room on ground floor that was slightly smaller but still comfortable. We ate in hotel and menu is limited but portions good size and they catered for gluten free & although bit of confusion with order it was soon sorted. The wine range was limited, no pinot & only choice of two white wines.
We all felt really relaxed after our stay and would come again.
Feel they are missing a trick not doing 1930’s murder mystery overnight stay as with all the amazing art deco & people dressed up you would be fully immersed in it. If they ever do, dont forget my invite!

Having frequented the dining room and bar on many occasions my wife and I recently enjoyed a stay at the 1930's art deco Aviator Hotel. The rooms have many 30's features providing comfortable accommodation. Following an enjoyable family dinner in the restaurant we relaxed in the bar & lounge areas - at the end of the evening it was great to just walk across the car park to our room instead of enduring an hours drive home - luxury! The following morning we enjoyed a tasty buffet breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the airfield. If visiting in the Spring through to the Autumn there is also the excellent on site museum to visit.

A delightful gem. We wanted an art deco hotel and we were not disappointed. The art deco theme was represented in the furniture and decor. The hotel is situated in an aerodrome and we had loads to see, we were treated to a war plane flyover, there were helicopters to view and someone was testing out their formula 3 racing car and bikes. Our room was a good size, a comfortable bed, the bathroom was a good size and the shower was powerful. We had a good selection of teas to choose from and, what was a welcome change, we had a choice of whole and semi skim milk and there was ample so we could have a couple of cups of coffee each. The food was homemade, breakfast was really good with plenty of options and during our stay, there was a different special each day, and I have to say the portions were very generous. The restaurant and bar staff were really friendly and the bar area is really comfortable, a great place to relax and enjoy a drink. The hotel is very clean, with good parking but note there is no electric charge points. The nearest charging point we found was the Ballantyne fitness club which had 2 fast charging points. The rooms are separate from the hotel but they have a card entry system so they are really secure. A must visit is the museum on site as well. We will definitely be returning again and it's a good location with loads of places of interest nearby. There are no lifts so if you have mobility issues be sure to request a ground floor room.

Stayed here for two nights to coincide with husband’s flight in a Spitfire with Ultimate Warbird Flights at Sywell, and wanted to be on site and have the full experience. Couldn’t fault the hotel for value for money or character - we loved the Art Deco ambiance and the interesting features. Had dinner one evening, and lunch the following day - perfectly adequate and decent value for money. Loved the way that you could sit outside in the garden and watch the planes taking off and landing, whilst enjoying a drink and some food. Bedroom was perfectly comfortable and quiet - not luxury, but then we weren’t paying a luxury price and we were totally happy. I would thoroughly recommend the Aviator to anyone who is interested in aviation, and we would certainly stay again if we are in the area.

If this hotel spent even close to the same amount of time on customer service as they have on decor it would be a nice hotel

The public areas are beautifully decorated in a very Art Deco style, and also the beer garden looking out onto the aero drome is a nice place to spend an evening, unfortunately for me that’s where the positives end

Unfortunately the problems started for me at check in . A very grumpy looking lady sat behind a perspex screen away from the front desk and was so uninterested / uninvitng looking I had to ask another member of staff where I could check in, they pointed towards me the aforementioned lady who managed to get a sarcastic skit in against me asking the chef

The bedrooms remind me of visiting an elderly great aunt and yes they are clean but slightly depressing to spend any length of time in , so to the bar it was

The website advertises an “extensive range of ales” last night that was 2 , a bigger problem was that they only had one member of staff working that bar and had numerous delays as people were trying to book to room (myself included) but miserable receptionist had obviously not pre authorised credit cards.

The bar atmosphere was destroyed by a group in the opposite side shouting swearing and helping themselves to lager by leaning over the bar

I eventually got served and ordered food, which arrived quicky and comprised of a rubbery chicken burger on a stale breadcake

I slept well until around 7 when the builders working behind the hotel decided to start work

After doing some work in the room I ventured to breakfast and was pleasantly surprised to see there were actually 2 people working , again I had to pay by card as no one had pre authed my card but no problem as I expected this after the previous evening.

I sat for 10 minutes without anyone taking my order, and only when I attracted the attention of one of the staff did she say she would take my order, she then proceeded to check 4 customers into the restaurant without coming back, I caught the attention of her colleague and ordered stating I am in a massive rush and asked if they could help

Imagine my disappointment then when a customer who arrived 15 minutes after me receiving their food first, it was at this point I requested a refund of breakfast and left

This may be a one off occurrence but when I stayed on the 14th june I can only say it was abysmal
