We were on a spontaneous weekend away in France, not on a mission to get anywhere in particular.
After a day visiting the British war memorial at Thiepval with a sustaining good lunch at the Cochon Sale nearby we headed North to find a place to stay.
Consulting the fantastic Logis de France guide, we lit upon the Hotel des Digues at Le Cateau near Cambrai.
Whilst not a breathtaking "find", the hotel is clean, welcoming and the food is lovely. I had the lamb and my wife had the veal kidneys.
I simply had to taste the Alsace Pinot Noir on offer as I had never seen it before.....excellent and a bit different.
The decor is a bit "special" and the Hotel Inspector would no doubt advise ditching all the decorative teddy bears and clutter on every horizontal surface but ignoring these it is, underneath, a good little hotel and the staff are very nice and welcoming.

I stayed here for 2 nights in April. This is not an international hotel and doesn't claim to be. As a local hotel in a small French town it measures up well. Sure, the rooms are small and "unusual" but that is its charm. I found everything to be clean and the restaurant was fine. If you don't go with 5 star expectations, you won't be disappointed. More
