An intimate and romantic retreat beside a magical lake Set in the rainforest high above the shores of Lago Petén Itzá is La Lancha, a quaint, 10-room lodge decorated with furniture, fabrics, and carvings from Guatemala personally selected by the Coppola family. Nearby is Tikal, the epicenter of Maya spirituality. Buried deep within the rainforest, the ruins include more than 3,000 structures where moss clings to the steps of ancient temples and plazas. With its beautiful lakeshore setting, relaxed ambiance, and close proximity to the lost world of Maya, La Lancha is an ideal destination to both enjoy a languid pace and explore the many adventures of the Petén region.

Stayed here for4 nights in a lakeside casita as our base for exploring Tikal, Yaxha, Topoxte, and El Mirador. It's a one hour drive away from the Flores airport, half of which is on paved roads, and half of which is on rocky dirt road (which is bumpy). If you're envisioning going "off campus" and doing a quick run into town, forget it. It's hard to access and it's pricey to get into town because of the distance. That being said, the lodge does a great job of providing you with everything you need for your Mayan adventure: drivers, guides, packed picnic lunches for your trips, and will even pack you a breakfast to go if you need to leave the lodge before the start of the normal breakfast service. We had a couple of breakfasts at the lodge, and had dinner there every night. we strongly recommend the local fish for dinner, which my husband had twice during our stay. All the other dishes were really good as well. Good vegetarian options if you don't eat meat. In addition to the tours, we enjoyed swimming in the lake, catching some sun on the dock at sunset, and being picked up from Flores by boat ("lancha") on one of our trip days to avoid the one hour drive.

Our casita was on the hill overlooking the lake. Huge terrace and gorgeous views. Very spacious bedroom for us, and a second bedroom we didn't use (it was just two of us). Very nice decorations all over the rooms. Shower delivered hot water with no problems. A treat was having a second toilet room.

On our trip to Tikal we had a very knowledgeable guide (Jesus Antonio) who I saw mentioned in previous reviews. He's the real deal, and was able to satisfy all the questions that were thrown at him.

This trip was not budget by any means, but since I like really nice hotels, this property delivered. They took care of all our needs, their service was all top-notch, food was excellent, and we had a great time.

Dear EBY-LIC, I want to send out a huge thank you for such a nice review on La Lancha and it's staff and the amazing experiences you had on your stay with us! I know getting here on the last 20 minute leg of the ride is just part of the adventure,as once at the resort there's much to see and do onsite. You got it right, we are just about an hour away from most of the archeological sites and other nature attractions, so arranging an itinerary for our clients is not too difficult. Our meals are 100% authentic and we love to meet each clients needs and expectations when it comes to food and special requirements. Our amazing guide- Jesus Antonio delivers such amazing information and makes your trips be full of memories. Lake Peten Itza is one of the most amazing spots to be, and enjoy swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding or also take out boat across the lake to Flores Island. Best Regards, Best Regards, Noe

We stayed in one of the newish Rainforest Junior Suites which we thought were fabulous. The room is very spacious with a good lounge area, an enormous double shower and two toilets. The AC a worked very well and the capsule coffee machine is top quality. The verandah has a partial lake view and a very large hammock. All the rooms here have a fair number of steps to reach them so if you have severe mobility issues it’s probably not the place for you.

The property is 50-60 minutes from the airport and about an hour to Tikal which counts as convenient compared to many of the remote places we stayed on this trip. The road to the west is currently much better than the road to the west but is being upgraded as of August 2022. If you have driven on plenty of dirt roads, it’s really no bother at all but I can understand why people used to highways are put off. You don’t need a 4x4/SUV as the road, especially east of the property is not particularly steep.

Service was always excellent and staff never failed to welcome us with cold towels. Cocktails at the bar on the menu were very good, especially the negroni and manhattan. Food is very good though not first class — generally simple style fresh and grilled, but tasty. The continental breakfast we got served in our room at 6am was perfect for an early-ish drive to Tikal.

If you’ve visited other tourist locations in Guatemala, I’d give Flores a miss. There is a moderately challenging 7km jungle trek off the road close to El Remate that is very much worth spending a morning doing from here before returning to the pool/lake.

Dear masaccio, Amazing that you took the time to leave such a wonderful review on your experience with us. You had one of the new added Suites which fits perfectly well for couples, especially if celebrating a special occasion such as a honeymoon. You have said it right, we are away from the city, but not that far from the majestic Tikal archeological site and just one hour away from the Mundo Maya International airport...and why not to say we are only half an hour away by boat from Flores Island. Great to know that you liked our food and loved our cocktails, staff here tries to accommodate our clients requests. There is much to do around our property, be it horseback ridding, archeological tours, adventure skywalk and canopy, sunset boat ridding, hiking at natural parks and much more.. then why not spend some fabulous time at our lake side, here you can go canoeing, paddle boarding, rope swinging, swimming or simply sip a glass of wine or take a cold beer just lying down on our lake dock lounge chairs. Best Regards,

We stayed three nights and the location of this hotel is gorgeous, in the middle of the lake Petén Itza in the department Petén of Guatemala. Our bungalow was really pretty with many comfortable details and at night we got always lighted candles at our beautiful terrace with Lake view. Also the stuff was incredibly nice and let us feel welcomed at any time. The mix of guatemalan typical food with an international touch was excellent. We want to thank everyone for making us feel so happy at our stay! It was the perfect getaway in these pandemic times! We recommend this place and can’t wait to be back for another beautiful stay!

Best regards

La Lacha - a luxury hotel of the Coppola family on the lake Peten Itza. The hotel has some double rooms and 2 suites, there is a pool, restaurant and access to the lake. It is an exotic hotel, no plastic, everything sustainable, great!

The hotel is located on the mountain and for this reason there are many stairs in the complex.

We spent a few days in the suite and it the room is (almost) perfect. There is a couch, every window has a mosquito net, and the bathroom is top notch. There are 2 bathrooms with 2 toilets, sinks and a shared shower room with 2 showers. Simply top.

Minibar, fans and air conditioning round it out. The veranda has a hammock, chairs and table and a beautiful view of the lake. What is missing for a perfect room? The air conditioner is on the side above the bed and when it is on you are right in the cold air. And it would be so easy to put the air conditioner in a different place. Too bad, someone didn't think it through.

The service in the hotel is great, always courteous, always nice. The food is great and whether breakfast or dinner, it was great.

The pool, the grounds, rooms - everything is very well maintained. The way to the lake is via many steps or a cable car (the ride takes 4 minutes). The lake has a jetty and it is wonderful to relax in the loungers there. There standup padel, a boat and a diving tower. This is really perfect.

And what is not perfect about this hotel?
1. the way to the hotel for 12 km (25 minutes) on a dirt road. However, they are already working on asphalting it.
2. the prices are high according to a luxury hotel. This is something that everyone must decide for themselves.
3. the air conditioning in the suite should be in a different place.

Dear petergerman2016; Let me shout out a loud and warm thank you for taking the time out from your busy agenda to write this review on your experience with us. You have described perfectly well what La Lancha is, where it is and what we have to offer. We are just perfectly located, amongst the hillside of our amazing 3rd largest lake in Guatemala- Lake Peten Itza. Access to the lake can be either be by stairs or you can also take a five minute ride on our jungle elevator (funicular) which is a truly jungle experience. There are much activities that one can do once at our lake jetty, here you can find canoes, Stand Up Paddle boards, inner floating tubes, rope swing, and nice lounger chairs to relax, take a drink, read a book or simply get sun tanned. All in-room amenities were specially selected for you to make you feel in the perfect place- there are hammocks, a/c, fans, safes, i home radios, WiFi, minibars. Thank you for the observation regarding the position of our a/c in your room being on the side above the bed, it is one of the two suites that have the A/C on this positions, but taking into consideration this observation, we will try find a better solution to avoid further inconveniences with any future clients. We are fortunate that road works are on their way and soon, hopefully by ending of this year we will have paved roads to get to our hidden jungle paradise! Best Regards,

Lovely boutique hotel to relax and enjoy the sounds of nature. No TVs, just a quiet reprieve to rest and relax. Perfect! I loved lounging on the hammock and taking the funicular down to the lake. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the grounds are well manicured. The food is good, albeit a bit expensive. I had to set up external tours as I was a party of one and the property had a minimum party size of two for booking tours. I deducted a star for this because in this day & age, solo travel is highly popular and upscale properties should be able to accommodate in my opinion. That or at least refer me to local operator. All in all I would visit again. The on-site staff were friendly.

Nevertheless there could have been a miscommunication since we do arrange tours for solo, couples or groups, but our prices are based on a per 2 persons rate to be able to carry out any tour. I am glad that you loved our boutique, rustic accommodations and as well so nice that you enjoyed the tranquility and relaxing ambience that surrounded you. Happy to learn that you enjoyed time on the hammock and at our lakeside dock. Seems that we fulfilled much of your expectations, and we do hope to host you again on a return visit to Flores,Peten Tikal Guatemala. Best Regards,

The bungalow was very quiet, and overall, the entire property was very quiet. (We may have been blessed by a period with no children in residence, though. hehe) We could have a peaceful morning coffee on our deck looking over the lush trees with a spectacular lake view. The staff was friendly and helpful, very prompt with their transportation services, and the food was very good. I was sad to have to leave...

Nice lodge with beautiful view of Lake Peten Itza. The service was great, staff very friendly, and food was good. In addition to their larger boat they have kayaks that the guests can take out on their own onto the lake (which I did). The lodge is located on the main road that circumscribes the lake but it's quiet, with low traffic. Massages are available, and after a couple of days lugging my photography equipment around this was an incredible amenity. The massage therapist was great, and massages take place in a separate private outdoor area nearer the lake. Regarding my overall trip to Guatemala: on initial arrival to Flores I rented a car and drove to Tikal where I stayed at a nearby hotel. The hotels near Tikal seemed like good options for a brief stay due to their proximity to the park (literally at the gates to Tikal), but not for a longer, more comfortable experience. Overall it worked out well to plan the stay near Tikal to visit the park (to maximize time there - it's 16 square km after all!), then a few nights at the much more comfortable La Lancha. I did one day trip from La Lancha to Yaxha, another archeology site, but Tikal was much larger so I wish I'd spent the extra time there instead.

Dear Tatuaje_espinal, I want to send out a very sincere thank you for taking the time to write such a very sincere, motivating and positive review on your experience at our intimate hideaway! Our staff is always ready and willing to host, serve and create unforgettable experiences for all of our dear guests. You are right- we do have quite much water toys such as SUP's, canoes, floating tubes, rope swing and a nice boat for sunset boat cruise. We have been getting such convincing and motivating feedback on massages, we assure our therapist does an amazing job. Nice that you experienced driving around on own and getting to different sites and parks and Flores Island- its fund driving around and move easily at own time and pace. I'd recommend doing 3-4 nights at La Lancha, this way you can get to enjoy some leisure, easy going time, also some time to visit archeological sites, natural parks and why not visit the antique, but picturesque island of Flores. The setting was beautiful right on the lake. The site was very lush and green. At night there was very beautiful romantic lighting. The hotel is just beautiful overall.
Also, the staff is what made our trip special. Every person we interacted with made their effort to make us feel welcome. They were genuine, warm, humble, and we felt at home. In particular a warm thanks to the staff at the reception and Carlos who served us dinner every night. He really made an effort to get to know us and our taste each night and always gave great recommendations. Each dinner was accompanied by a surprise aperitif. The dinner was always excellent.
This was our last stop in Guatemala and what a special end. We would recommend this place and would love to come back someday.
* We were also upgraded due to a small AC problem in our room. Which is always a welcome surprise.

This is a truly beautiful hotel, one of my favourite places I've stayed. Our room was gorgeous, with a huge balcony overlooking the jungle and lake beyond. We'd sit out in hammocks as spider monkeys went past. The scenery and attention to detail in the design made it all so peaceful and special.
Everyone working at the hotel was unbelievably kind. Before we arrived, they asked if we had any dietary restrictions. My partner was dealing with some complicated health issues, and had a very limited diet. At dinner, they suggested various dishes they could prepare for him. Breakfast always comes with a complimentary muffin, and they specially made one for him without dairy. They were so warm and considerate. Honestly, the only downside of staying here is that everywhere else will seem like a letdown in comparison.

We completely loved our stay in La Lancha. The staff is great and makes you feel very welcomed at the very first second you arrive. They explained in detail everything about the hotel and hotel room and were very attentive always. The hotel room we booked “Rainforest Casita” was amazing! We had a lovely view, the rooms are HUGE and spacious, very nicely decorated and overall it was beautiful and very comfortable. We are definitely going back, it was absolutely worth it! Is there transport that can be provided to Tikal?
Answer from GusinLondon
London129 contributions121 helpful votes
Yes, the Lodge can arrange that easily - they have their own guides too - or you can book taxi services from Flores/Santa Elena. The hotel option will be more expensive, but they include some nice extras too, and the vehicle is likely to be air conditioned. The trip takes about 45 minutes by car. Would also recommend their organised sunset trip to Yaxha, a smaller less busy site than Tikal. Again, high quality guide. Just in case you are thinking of travelling off-season, I think La Lancha may be closed during the winter months, tho not sure.

Our room (Lakeview Room) had two air conditioning units and also a ceiling mounted fan. I do not know where the man from Doha was staying but it does not sound like La Lancha, which was extremely comfortable with all modern amenities, considering it is in the middle of nowhere!
