This is not at all what the website describes or depicts in the images. It is my understanding that the “resort “ is under new ownership and the family who runs it does not properly clean or maintain it. They are very clearly more interested in hosting their own family and were often not available when needed and could often be found at the beach during working hours drinking and watching their own children. Main trash and recycling was not emptied until over-flowing and animals created a mess and fire pits were never emptied of ash.

Our cabin was not clean upon check-In, floors were dirty, there were mouse droppings in the bedrooms, and our toilet leaked terribly. We were assured someone would come to fix the following day after a make-shift fix and no one showed up. We found dirty cleaning rags on shelves and in the microwave, none of which could have been used prior to our arrival. The bathtub and sink was dirty and in need of serious repair.

The cabin was poorly stocked with NO proper utensils or necessities like garbage bags tea towels, bbq tools etc. The kettle and coffee maker were in need of a deep clean and I could not bring myself to use these. Linens were provided (fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillow case) however were the wrong size for the beds and the mattress cover appeared unwashed

The beach was poorly maintained with garbage not being emptied, broken chairs for use and broken equipment (many paddles were broken and life jackets were moldy). Broken toys were half buried in the sand and garbage and litter was strewn across the property.

We will most definitely not be returning.😡

This is not what the website describes. It is under new ownership and the family who runs it does not properly clean or maintain it and have jacked up the prices.

It is a set of motel like cabins on a major connecting highway.

It is not on a lake.

You listen to traffic and transport trucks from your leaky crappy dirty little cabin with NO proper utensils or necessities (garbage bags, soap, toilet paper, tea towel...) and pay over 200 per night to have to walk across the highway to get to a poorly maintained lake with NO beach and two broken playgrounds. It is very weedy and much of the watercrafts are broken.

I had to fight with the owner to get my third night stay charge back. He doesn't clean up anything, now the lawns or properly care for the cabins.

It looks nothing like the website.

STEER CLEAR! YOU'RE WELCOME! SAVE YOUR MONEY.

The lady above mentioned that if you have small kids you have to cross the road to get to the beach so you can’t just let them run ahead and meet you at the beach ... That is probably a huge benefit because kids should not be at the beach unsupervised especially if they are small kids that is extremely dangerous and any good parent would never allow that just making a point have a great day

My family really enjoyed our week here. It's awesome for the price -- we paid $850 (not including tax) for one week in a 2-bedroom cottage. The cottage has a great layout and lots of comforts -- wifi, full size tub, coffee maker, popcorn machine, blender, etc. it had more amenities than I expected! Every cottage has their own firepit in front and BBQ.

The waterfront area has several wooden structures for shade which we appreciated and LOTS of watercraft for us to use. We never had to wait for anything -- kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, SUP, round floating tubs, foam mat...LOTS! It was fun for the kids.

The sand is not the best, but the kids spent time catching minnows with nets and fishing for sunfish off the dock. There's lots of fish here, but mostly very small stuff. My husband was not impressed with the fishing here on the Gull River and Shadow Lake because he likes to catch big ones. He was able to catch pike and bass, but only very small ones, even when he was out in a canoe and paddled towards the lake. But it's great for kids to catch plentiful sunfish off the dock.

The only downside of this place is that you have to cross a road to get to the waterfront area. So if you have small kids, you can't just let them run ahead and meet you on the beach. The road can get busy sometimes and there's traffic noises if you're sensitive to that while sleeping.

Overall, I think it was a wonderful family trip and I would recommend this place.

Lesley G asked a question Dec 2023
Hi, I need some advice from someone who can help me to get my deposit of $5,000CAD refunded NOW. Backstory, I am living with Stage IV Colon Cancer and earlier this year, I made arrangements with the owners of Kawartha Hideaway to pay the deposit required in instalments. I so wanted to experience a White Christmas with my family. The price quoted was higher than that advertised on their website and the security amount was doubled (from $500 to $1000). The required deposit was 50% of $5900 and in total, I paid $5,000CAD (which is a significant amount of money for me). I also received chemo treatment for almost 6 months and in early September I wrote to Kawartha Hideaway explaining that my oncologist had advised against me travelling to Canada and that advice also made me ineligible for travel insurance. The Cottages In Canada website showed "Free Cancellation - full refund" if notified by a particular date. I gave more than 90 days notice, however, silly me did not read ALL the small print when I signed a document electronically online. The small print basically says that if the cancellation is more than 90 days AND they are successful in re-renting, the cancelling renter will be reimbursed all original funds but if they are unsuccessful in re-renting I will not be reimbused anything, even though I had paid more than the required deposit. The remaining 50% of the deposit was not required until the 22 November. I have emailed the owner many times since but he refuses to email me back. The Availibility page for his accomodation has not been updated since the 9th September 2023 so it is difficult to know whether or not he has re-let the property. I am desperate to get my money back as I am now not able to take my family on holiday for Christmas. Could someone please advise me if there is any consumer rights department in Canada that I can get some legal advice from. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I don't want to leave a bad review just yet, in case, that really angers the owner and I don't get back any money at all? MY name is Lesley Gousmett, email: lesleyag13 at yahoo co nz
