A 700 year old coaching inn with six en-suite bedrooms, several with original medieval feature walls and windows. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine and is based on what local seasonal ingredients are available from the farmers and fishermen. The bar serves several local cask ales and ciders, the usual selection of lagers, spirits and wines and has a good top shelf of Scotch and Whiskey.

We stayed for 3 nights and was welcomed warmly by Jonny who showed us to our room and explained the procedure for dinner and breakfast. Our room was in keeping with the building the bed was very comfortable and had blackout curtains which was welcome for sleeping in. The restaurant was cosy and spacious it had a limited menu but was excellent as it had something for everyone and used local produce, which was delicious. Breakfast was one of the best we’ve had. Alice looked after she was warm and friendly making sure we had everything we needed.
Walsingham also has a great bus service so would encourage you to use.

We spent three nights at The Black Lion, breakfasting each morning and dining in one night. It is an excellent place for touring the region. Prior to arriving we had very good communications with the hotel and on arrival and throughout we had a very friendly, warm and efficient welcome from all the staff. Their Covid19 awareness was excellent, social distancing was in place and little touches were much appreciated - fresh milk in a jug each day, a bed, bowl and towel for our dog (perhaps this should be mentioned on the website!), who was treated very well, and very little intrusion into our room during our stay. Our room was plenty large enough and quirkily decorated, which we liked. There was evidence of damp in the bathroom ceiling and one small corner of the room had not been cleaned, but these were minor things, especially as we discovered that the rooms are apparently due for a refresh in the near future

Breakfast was very good indeed, with high quality ingredients. Toasted artisan bread would have been an improvement. Coffee was good

Our evening meal was very good, too - tasty calamari , quality steak and some very nice desserts (my wife had a really excellent cheese board)
We very much enjoyed our stay and especially the warm and friendly welcome as we came and went. We'd recommend this place highly and will hopefully return before long

This hotel was a last minute find. It was well placed to visit Holt, Blickling Hall, Holkham Hall and the coast. Our room was clean and well presented, only down side was the very small bathroom but good to have it en-suite. From checking in till leaving the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The waitress on our first evening made our experience very enjoyable. Unfortunately not so at our first breakfast. Seemed to be a problem for waitress to provide the cereal choice. The cooked breakfast was great with toast, fruit juice and coffee or tea. Evening meals both nights were really good, we were glad we booked our meals at the hotel, not many places close by to eat, if you wanted to have a drink. Only down side in the restaurant was other residents coming into the dining room from the side door. Whilst we were eating they arrived soaking wet with two dogs, walked through the restaurant leaving the door open behind them. We were asked to use that door late at night or early morning. With regard to COVID 19 the whole place was clean everywhere, after each resident use everything was cleaned again. We stayed two nights and our room had the minimum done by staff which was fine. Tables in the restaurant and bar were well spread out. Our short break was great considering difficult times. The hotel Is run with resident’s safety considered. For customers not staying at the hotel a track and track record is kept.

Thank you for your review and comments. I will pass your kind comments onto the relevant teams regarding your visit to The Black Lion. In relation to the Breakfast we normally have a buffet table setup with all the cereals, juices etc on but with the current climate we are unable to offer this service at present. I will ensure all team members know what cereal choices are on offer and I hope we will see you again in the future at the Black Lion.

Over the years we have eaten at the Black Lion on many occasions returning each time because of it's character, relaxed atmosphere, excellent choice of food and location. Because of covid we haven't been in a long time and having looked forward to returning we were disappointed. The service was good and food acceptable but the choice on the menu was extremely limited. In truth, I think the Black Lion has tried to go too up market which also, is not in keeping with this historical village which for hundreds of years has attracted pilgrims to the shrines Walsingham. In the past it's always been a delight to end the day by visiting this lovely pub /restaurant but sadly it won't be on our list of priorities in the future. Black Lion please don't lose your character, retrieve what you had in this little gem!

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago after having stayed for years and years on our annual visit. There had been a lot of staffing changes and I have to say I won’t be returning any time in the future. The service was poor with a particularly rude new manager who just seemed to think it was all a joke when our food wasn’t up to their usual standard.

The rooms did seem a little uncared for and for what you pay it just really isn’t value for money anymore and the service doesn’t match up either. Whilst there we found a much nicer hotel which was much cheaper - we will be there next year instead!

Would not recommend this place...

Stayed for a couple of nights as a short break. Lovely old building. Greeted by very friendly staff with full COVID procedures in place. Our room was small but comfy. Tea and coffee making facilities provided, together with bottled water. One still and one sparkling. TV, wi-fi, magnifying mirror and toiletries all there.

We ate in the hotel on our first night and had a fabulous meal. My kedgeree was absolutely delicious and my venison cassoulet was mouth watering. My lovely Jean had the crab arancini to start which were brilliant (I had one to try) and a wonderful steak and kidney pie (proper with a pastry base).

We had a bottle of prosecco, which was very drinkable and reasonably priced and I had a glass of tempranillo with my venison (lovely).

Breakfast on both mornings was exceptional. Fruit juice, full english with toast and decent coffee. Baked beans were not part of the breakfast, but my Jean loves them so I asked and the staff provided.

The following night we ate out and had a couple of drinks before we left and their beer is good too.

A really fantastic stay and a great hotel and I fully recommend it.

Stayed overnight and enjoyed a lovely meal at The Black Lion. The room was beautifully furnished with a rustic style while the bar, although a little small had an excellent ambience. The menu was a broad in choice with many tempting dishes while the breakfast was excellent. The only issue was that we went when there was a religious festival so parking was at a premium.

Ok we are in the time of COVID so things are not like they are normally so I have given a Very Good. I think the Staff were great and the place is fantastic very welcoming. The selection of drinks great, however food was a problem the Sea Bass was very small and cost a bit but had little in taste to much other stuff. My burger was the Lamb one and was great the Veggie one lacked taste I am told. It is hard as they were so good but food could have been better especially for price.

Thank you for your review and comments regarding your recent visit to The Black Lion. I will ensure the team know what a great job they are doing during this current climate. Also I will pass on your comment to the Chef regarding the Seabass and Burgers. We are very shortly changing the menu to our Autumn offering and will ensure the Veggie Burger is reviewed. I hope we will see you again at the Black Lion.

We really enjoyed our evening at the Black Lion. I can’t eat gluten and nearly all the menu was gluten free (I feel like the Black Lion should be shouting this from the rooftops!), so I had far more choice than in other restaurants and it was difficult to decide what to have. The food was cooked to a very high standard and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. We also shared a great bottle of wine, with the only thing letting the evening down was it being plonked on the table and not being offered to try it/the first glass poured. It didn’t seem in keeping with the rest of the great experience we had at the Black Lion. We will definitely be back and encourage others to try!

Stayed one night, free parking close by, quirky hotel, small bedroom adequate for one night wouldn't want to stay more than that. Tiny bathroom, we were told before we arrived. Food good - choose from a set menu, two or three courses, delicious Broccoli soup 🍲 and pan fried salmon with mash. Breakfast good too. Staff not as friendly as comments suggest most things we asked for produced a no response!

It was open when we visited in peak season last summer but the hospitality trade in north Norfolk was in a very topsy turvy state even then. For example dinner might only be offered on certain nights and we booked a hotel which ostensibly offered lunch and dinner but when we arrived those services were not offered at all and they had a sister brasserie in Hunstanton which was shut. We were told all the hospitality staff had decided to opt for more secure better paid jobs with better conditions with local supermarkets

Yes I saw people with bikes there and indeed I would think looking at the place the risk of bike theft is 0.5 out of a hundred
