To celebrate our 30th anniversary we enjoyed the all inclusive Luxury hotel accommodations at Sanctuary Cap Cana which included a wonderful, always smiling butler Camacho who checked in on us via WhatsApp at least twice per day and when we sent him a question, we received an immediate reply. Our stay, from Sept 25 to Oct 1, was in the “Castle” section of the resort on the second floor, room 2054 and faced the ocean, offering a perfect view of the sunrise at 6:20am. A five min walk from our room brought us to an amazing breakfast buffet. Every staff member within the entire resort greeted you with a smile and a “Good Morning”. Most staff members spoke English and would gladly help you with your attempt at a Spanish greeting. This time of year provided on most of the 7 days a high temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and small crowds. But small crowds meant all of their wonderful restaurants were not all open every night which just meant we had to plan ahead so we would experience every one. We brought with us enough cash for gratuities for beach attendants and waitstaff who [appeared] to share the day’s tips at the end of a shift by localized area (beach, restaurant, bar, room service, etc) and separate gratuity for our driver, room cleaner and butler, all of whom deserved what we gave and more. (We had to replenish at main lobby desk with another USD $200 and incurred the 10% fee). Although we spent most of our time at the pristine beach, there were at least half a dozen pools with plenty of lounge chairs & beach towels and best of all …. no children (we desperately needed an r & r from our nine kids).

We stayed in the castle and our view was gorgeous. The property is well maintained, feels very safe, spacious and beautiful. Our Butler Jeremia was pretty good at getting us reservations and helped make my husband’s birthday special with balloons, wine and cake.

Highlights were Yoga with Jose over the water, Aqua bikes class, and a hot stone massage with Sofie that was out of this world. The spa is very nice, and the gym in the castle is also nice. We really enjoyed the food for the most part. The Wok was the best food on property in our opinion (2 couples).
Overall we had a nice time, it was 4.5 star experience.
We went with Hispaniola Aquatic adventures for a catamaran experience and it outstanding, and better value than what was offered through Carlos the Costco guy on property.

Areas for improvement: Managing space at the pools. People get up at 5 or 6am to get chairs. This is not a relaxing, vacation vibe but competitive and stressful! It needs to be managed much more or more chairs added.
The DJs are pretty bad. They struggled to understand and play requests. They were expert at clearing the dance floor, which was a bummer when people wanted to dance in the disco tech after the Dominican night.
If you like wine or beer, you might be disappointed that you’ll be paying extra every night. They have plenty of liquor but included wine is super limited and the only beer that’s included is Presidente.

Tips:
1. Book restaurants that require reservations right away when you arrive, the Italian and Wok get booked out quickly.
2. Find a friend, pool help like Happy Boy or a Butler to help reserve you chairs by the pool.
3. Everyone is looking for tips so bring plenty of $1s and $5s

What I love most about this resort is that it is eclectic with a colonial Spanish feel. It is just as my title says, unique and stunningly beautiful. You can stay in The Castle, a large thatched roof villa or several other luxurious suites and junior suites. Virtually all rooms have a sea view. Speaking of the sea, it is the perfect beach. Clean white sand and turquoise sea weed free water that you will want to spend hours in. There are also several lovely pools from the “fun” pool with the obligatory swim up bar to several other quiet ones. We especially enjoyed the pool on the 3rd level of The Castle.

Because Sanctuary is not one of those mega cookie cutter resorts the food options are a little more limited than a mega resort but nevertheless plentiful enough and with, I think, better quality. We especially enjoyed The Steakhouse and The Blue Marlin.

The other impressive thing about Sanctuary is the high level of personalized service. I especially want to thank Juan Lugo who was our personal butler. He communicated with us each day to maje sure all our wants were met, make reservations and to update us on daily activities. He truly made us feel special. Gracias Lugo. I also want to thank Jennette who is a hostess at the breakfast/lunch buffet as well as the Italian restaurant. She is a lovely person that we looked forward to seeing and talking to everyday.

It has been 18 months since Hurricane Fiona devastated The Dominican. Sanctuary suffered major damage but to see it now you would never know. Marriott Bon Voy purchased Sanctuary after the hurricane and is obviously making the necessary investment to keep this a 5+ star property.

Dear Eric Deremer, We're thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful experience at Sanctuary Cap Cana! Thank you for highlighting what makes our resort unique and stunningly beautiful. Our colonial Spanish architecture and eclectic design aim to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests. We're glad you enjoyed staying in The Castle and appreciated the sea views from virtually every room. Our pristine beach and multiple pools offer plenty of opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment. We understand that our food options may be more limited compared to larger resorts, but we're pleased that you found them plentiful and of high quality. The Steakhouse and The Blue Marlin are indeed popular choices among our guests. We're especially grateful for your kind words about our personalized service. Juan Lugo, our personal butler, and Jennette, our hostess, exemplify our commitment to providing exceptional service to every guest. We're delighted that they made your stay special. Lastly, we appreciate your acknowledgment of the efforts to restore and improve Sanctuary Cap Cana after Hurricane Fiona. We're committed to maintaining our 5+ star status and providing unforgettable experiences for our guests. Thank you for choosing to stay with us, and we hope to welcome you back soon! Best regards, Randy Ogando Social Media Manager.

I have to believe that the guests leaving 5-star reviews have never stayed at another luxury all-inclusive property, because I felt this one was underwhelming.

First of all, I have nothing bad to say about the staff. Everyone we encountered was friendly & helpful and they were clearly working hard in very hot weather.

Everything else was a bit of a let down, though. Our first room had some maintenance issues, and I was surprised we weren't automatically moved given the resort was not full. They did finally move us on our 3rd day after I brought it up for the second time, and we ended up in the Castle section.

I wish we had booked the Castle section to begin with, because it was much nicer and more in line with other high end resorts we've been to, but it wasn't super clear on the website what a difference it actually was.

I do not go to all-inclusive resorts expecting five-star meals, but the casual dining here was lacking. Their poolside menu was nearly non-existent; if we wanted to eat anything other than a cheeseburger or chicken wings, we had to get dressed and dine-in at a restaurant. It was a good excuse to take a break from the sun, but most days I wished I could just order a quesadilla / pizza / club sandwich or something to eat on my lounge chair.

A lot of the reviews I read prior to our trip raved about Sanctuary Town -- it's on resort property but it is open to the public & features a pizza restaurant, sushi restaurant, ice cream shop, and a burger place that was closed for renovations while we were there. The great reviews about the pizza place were well-earned, but I underestimated the impact "open to the public" would have. One night we showed up for pizza and there were young children running around -- literally running -- while their parents chatted. This continued for the entire time we ate and even followed us into the ice cream shop an hour later. For an adults-only resort, it was unexpected.

The rooms in the Castle section were good, but the regular room we had booked (junior ocean view) was very mid -- it needed a deep cleaning if not a full renovation. I loved the turndown service every night, but daily housekeeping was struggling and I finally had to write a note asking for clean towels as they would take away our used towels everyday without replacing them.

If you like an afternoon snack of potato chips or something sweet, bring your own -- the minibar is only beverages with no snacks. After 7 days on property, I finally broke down and bought a can of Pringles for $15.

The grounds were absolutely stunning, though, and the dine-in restaurants were perfectly acceptable for what I'd expect from an all-inclusive. However, for being part of the Marriott Luxury Collection, I definitely expected more. We had a nice trip because it was good to get away and relax, but ultimately we wished we had returned to the resort we visited in 2023 instead.

Dear Jenn B, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback with us. We're pleased to hear that our staff left a positive impression, as they strive to deliver exceptional service despite the challenges of the weather. However, we are truly sorry that other aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. We apologize for the maintenance issues in your initial room and the delay in addressing them. We're glad that your experience improved after moving to the Castle section, but we regret that it wasn't clear how different the experiences in various sections of our resort can be. Your comments about the dining options, particularly the limited poolside menu and the experience at Sanctuary Town, have been noted. We understand that the ability to enjoy casual meals by the pool is important. We are committed to providing a luxury experience that aligns with the standards of the Marriott Luxury Collection. Your insights are invaluable in helping us identify areas for improvement, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future to show you the true potential of our resort. If you decide to visit again, please feel free to reach out to us directly, and we will ensure your stay is nothing short of exceptional. Best regards. Randy Ogando. Social Media Manager.

We loved our 4 night/ 4 day vacation at Sanctuary Cap Cana! We flew into Punta Cana airport and the hotel helped us arrange transportation for a fee, which was very easy. There was about a 30-45 minute delay to check in due to others checking in, but we were given a welcome drink and offered a comfortable place to sit. Next we met our wonderful Butler Camacho! He helped orient us to the room and then took us around on a golf cart to see the property. He was available via whatsapp (or in person) for our entire stay and even made us a reservation for the Italian restaurant ahead of time (which was our favorite meal)! The Butler service comes with the Castle rooms and while it isn't essential to your stay, I really enjoyed having this extra level of attention to help with logistics!

Our room in the castle was a bit dated but was nice, quiet, and with an amazing view of the ocean. The resort as a whole is also beautiful with 6 pools and a beach, as well as stunning interiors. The food was delicious, especially the Blue Marlin, the Italian restaurant, and the Casa Bella buffet (which shocked me since I am not generally a buffet person). I also loved the quick food options like the coffee shop in the lobby! The drinks were delicious and we loved the swim up bar.

In terms of activities, we LOVED the fitness classes. We did water aerobics two days and aqua spinning one day. The instructors were so energetic and fun. I also did a bike tour one afternoon that was maybe not the best idea in the sun/heat, but went to two views of the ocean off resort. The evening entertainment usually had one to two options a night.

What sets this resort apart is the service, which was top notch! Not only did we love having Camacho looking out for us, but Happy Boy and Evli at the pool were AMAZING and saved our spot for us every day. The bartenders at the pool bar were incredible too.

Although the website says gratuity is included, make sure to bring lots of small bills to tip- trust me, you will want to reward the hotel staff for how amazing they are. If you don't bring cash, the hotel can do a cash advance or a 10% fee, which we did, but we wished we had more cash from home. One thing we think the resort could do to improve is to have the sanctuary town restaurants open each night of the week, but it was the low season when we visited.

We loved this resort and would definitely return!!

Overview: I attended a conference at this property and failed to check reviews beforehand. I hope my experience helps others avoid the challenges I faced.

Positives: The property is beautiful and conveniently close to the airport. The welcome beverage was a nice touch, especially as check-in took some time—add rum. Some newer rooms, particularly in the villa and castle areas, are stunning.

My experience:

Rooms: The initial rooms I was shown (3000 building and the reception building) were disappointing: old, poorly maintained, and had a musty/mildew odor suggestive of potential mold. This was concerning given my health situation. Staff framed my concerns as personal preferences of not liking the room rather than addressing the health or quality issues. Their solution was to spray air freshener—did not mask the mold/mildew and made it difficult to breathe.

Customer Service: I had to pay an additional $100 per night to move to a room where I could breathe comfortably, even as an Elite member. While the new room was an improvement (not everything worked), it only had double beds and fell short of the luxury experience I had expected.

Spa: The spa was beautiful but underwhelming. Check-in was confusing, my appointment was delayed by an hour, and the treatment itself was average. The foot massage and facial enhancements were not worth the cost—avoid. The hot stone enhancement was nice.

Food: Food at the property was just average. I did like the fried chicken on the beach. While it’s all-inclusive, it lacked the quality one might expect at this price point. Food enthusiasts should adjust expectations or look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts:

I would not choose to stay here again for a vacation at any price point. The experience felt more like a 3-star property. If you plan to visit, I strongly recommend calling ahead to secure a newer room and managing expectations regarding dining and spa services. Some staff were delightful, though others seemed less enthusiastic about their roles.

My husband and I visited this resort for our 8th anniversary. We booked an ocean view Castle Junior Suite. Upon arrival, we had a piece of Black Forest cake, Dominican Cacao, and bottle of Mamajuana waiting in our room to celebrate. Our butler was Eric, and he was the BEST! He took us on a tour of the resort, and alerted us daily of activities and restaurant selections available. He was available via What’s App for any concerns or questions we had. As stated in other reviews, the beach is not clear blue water, but we knew that going in. I grew up going to “dirty Myrtle” so it wasn’t an issue for me. The seaweed is better on some days than others, but they have a crew that works their tails off raking the beach and trying to contain it. I also suggest water shoes and small steps because upon entry there are some large rocks and dips, but once you get out a bit, it is no longer an issue. The pool areas are great, and there are several to choose from. Someone was always willing to grab your towels and get you set up in a nice spot. Drink service was on point, we never had to wait long between rounds. Although tips are “included”, I would suggest bringing a little extra for that. I saw how hard the employees work, most in long pants in incredible heat and humidity. I would rate the restaurants 4/5. The first night at Blue Marlin was not good. I think our order was lost in translation. I put that on myself, for visiting a country where I don’t speak the language. I could have used Google translate. I would suggest that if it seems you are not being understood. I won’t name the waiter because again, that’s on me. In contrast, Bladimir and Danny as servers at the Steakhouse were great. That was our favorite restaurant so we ate there twice. We also had a nice dinner at Capriccio. The Casabella lunch buffet had a nice daily lunch selection, and you can also visit the smaller restaurants in Sanctuary Town, a small area across from the main hotel which has pizza, sushi, beer, and ice cream/sweets. The Wok was closed on our visit so we did not get to try that. Overall, there is a large selection to choose from and room service is available 24 hours with a $10 service fee. We enjoyed our first stay in DR, and would definitely consider rebooking this resort on a return trip.

My wife had a fantastic time at Sanctuary Cap Cana to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. We immediately noticed how luxurious and pristine the entire resort looked, along with how personable the staff was.

We stayed in the Castle and was impressed with the quality and size of the room. We had a 1st floor room with wooden deck (in between pool and ocean beach). Our butler was Juan Lugo and he was fantastic with booking our dinner reservations, bringing extra treats, giving us a tour of the resort, and helping with any requests we had.

We spent a lot of time at the main pool and I have to give a huge shout out to Jose (aka the Black Dolphin) and how accommodating he was. He even used a pic of us to print out a “happy anniversary” picture for us one morning. Additionally, Manuel was a great bartender and was pretty funny.

The food was great across the board. We got there during the one week that Casabella was closed for repairs and they used the Blue Marlin instead, so even though we had a slightly smaller buffet, breakfast was great. We would also head over there for lunch and loved the salad bar and the crab cake. We loved the 2-person platter at the steakhouse, swordfish at the Italian restaurant, salmon at Blue Marlin (dinner), pizza and sushi at Sanctuary town, and the hibachi at Wok. The only thing I wish I could change is extending the hours of Sanctuary Town to open for lunch. Also, the room service was great and we used that for mimosas a couple mornings. The smoothie bar was pretty legit and I used it every morning.

You’ll also need to sign up for the 10:30am bike ride (~1 hr) with Luis. It was just my wife and I, so he was able to take us around a little bit more than normal and it was really fun. Additionally, Pedro led most of the activities and he brought the party. My wife talked me into joining the water aerobics and water spin class (they put the bikes in the pool) and both were a lot more fun than I would have ever imagined.

Sadly, the beach was covered with seaweed the whole time as we got there right after a storm, but it was clear the resort prioritized getting it cleared up. Other who arrived 2 days before us said it was completely clear, but we spent so much time around the pools that we didn’t mind too much.

Other random notes: we appreciated how the whole area was a gated community and very safe, easy commute from airport (VIP service upon arrival was worth it), the small shops out front are CRAZY expensive so pack everything you need, Alex the photographer at the resort was great (2nd floor above main lobby), the welcome drink was soooo good.

Overall, it was a FANTASTIC time and we’re already looking at when we could possibly come back!

We stayed in the castle portion of Sanctuary Cap Cana. Our Butler was Juan Lugo. He did an amazing job and communicated with us every day, and even made personal check ins while we were out and about. We visited the spa and did the signature couples massage, we were not a fan of the hydrotherapy but the massages were amazing. There was a lot of rain damage in the castle, fortunately this did not affect our room personally and they were quick to fix repairs. None of the alcoholic drinks we received were consistent with their pours, some were very watered down and others were so strong we couldn't finish them. The main pool swim up bar always had very loud and obnoxious people (there’s always the one person) and there was no cut off point for intoxicated men and women. I was not let into the casa Bella restaurant due to wearing my swim suit, mind you I was wearing a tank top and skirt over it. Even though during breakfast hours multiple people are allowed to eat there with see through covers and obvious swim suits on. All the servers at each restaurant were very tentative and there was no judgment when you mispronounced the food names. Our favorite server was from the steakhouse and our favorite food was the dessert from Cappricio(Italian restaurant) and the pizza from sanctuary town. Due to the high seaweed content during the spring, the beach was not as pictured, even after they cleaned up all the seaweed, the water was brown. We went to more Northern Punta Cana for excursions and their beaches were beyond beautiful with no seaweed issues. Sanctuary cap Cana did everything they could to make the beach look presentable. Overall the stay was amazing, food was pretty good, and it was a comfortable safe environment. We highly recommend this resort for any couples that don’t mind not having the greatest beach. Adult families would probably like to check out other options, this is more of a couples vibe resort

Dear Katythelady701, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review of your honeymoon stay at Sanctuary Cap Cana. We are thrilled to hear that Juan Lugo provided exceptional service and made your experience memorable. We will be sure to pass along your kind words to him. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the spa, beverages, and pool environment. Your comments are invaluable in helping us improve our services. We apologize for any inconsistencies you experienced with the drinks and the noise at the swim-up bar. We will address these issues with our team to ensure a more consistent and enjoyable experience for our guests. We're also sorry to hear about the confusion with the dress code at Casa Bella. We understand how frustrating this can be and will work to clarify our policies to ensure a smoother dining experience for all guests. Your comments about the seaweed are noted, and we are glad our team’s efforts to maintain the beach were appreciated despite the natural challenges. We are continuously working on improving our beach maintenance to provide the best possible experience for our guests. We are delighted that you enjoyed the food, especially the desserts from Capriccio and the pizza from Sanctuary Town. Your praise for our servers is much appreciated, and we will ensure they are recognized for their excellent service. Thank you for recommending our resort to couples seeking a romantic getaway. We hope to welcome you back in the future for another memorable stay. Warm regards, Randy Ogando Social Media Manager.

Overall we had an amazing trip. It was our first time at the resort and we booked last minute through the Marriott app. We had great service, especially from Juan Jose (Belen) at the breakfast buffet and the steakhouse. Ginette and other hostesses were so pleasant as well. The pool staff providing fresh towels and umbrellas were fantastic and we really loved the Beach Bar (shout out to Alexis and Elvi for keeping us happy with yummy drinks! ). I have a food allergy which is scary at buffets and resorts in general. They did a great job handling it. I never got sick. The grounds are so well kept and bathrooms are cleaned regularly. Room was clean too!
The beach is sad right now because of the sargassum seaweed, but that’s not fault of the resort. We liked entertainment when it was outdoors, but really disliked anything inside that night club. I wish there was more outdoor entertainment. Also would be fun to have games like board games or casino night or something. We met such nice people here too. I really disliked the music choice for the spin and water aerobics at the pool, but that’s not a huge deal. And the playlist at the pool is the same daily and could use some variation. Again… these are such minor issues. The staff at this resort truly made our 14 year anniversary special. I hope to return! We also really enjoyed the red snapper at the seafood restaurant, and the gorgeous view from there. The spa was great too. I had a wonderful massage and so did my husband. We don’t typically have a relaxing resort trip like this, and we really enjoyed it.
