We had lunch and dinner here on different days during w/c 14th Sept 2020. Both meals were very tasty, well presented and satisfying. The staff are all very enthusiastic and attentive. I'd call the prices mid-range with mains starting at around £13 - £14. The premises are Covid compliant with loads of outside dining space and they welcome dogs. Located on the southern edge of the NY Moors about 15 minutes south of Helmsley. We will definitely seek the Fairfax out next time we are in the area.

Just returned from a three day stay at this wonderful place. We have enjoyed many previous visits to the Fairfax but this had to be different due to Covid restrictions. As usual the amazing team came up trumps! Everything was perfectly organised, one way system in and out, hand sanitizing stations all around and clearly labelled waiting areas. We felt completely safe, relaxed and comfortable. The staff had put a great deal of effort in creating this environment which we fully appreciated after 20 weeks in virtual lockdown. The room, the food and the service were excellent. Many thanks to James and the team for providing this escape from Covid. We will be back soon.

My husband and I stayed here for a night in Room 11 - inclusive of jacuzzi bath and whole room underfloor heating.
The room was beautifully set out with all facilities right where you would want them to be. A wonderfully comfortable bed and very clean.
The pub itself is a warm and welcoming environment serving excellent food, not least an amazing full cooked breakfast. However, it's greatest asset is the friendly staff who made you feel like you've always known them. Can't wait to come back to this wonderful haven in an ideal location - thank you all!

We ate here tonight and received really good service from the very young staff. They were extremely tentative, polite and knowledgeable. The food was very nice if slightly undercooked for our taste. The waitress had no problem when asked to cook a little more to suit our taste. We sat in the area to the left of the main entrance which housed just 3 tables ensuring they take the social distancing very seriously. It was a lousy night weather wise so a great comfort to have the log fire blazing on arrival. Overall a lovely meal albeit a tad pricey. Would eat here again if I was in the area.

We have passed this pub on many occasions and thought how wonderful it looks. We were excited to be finally staying. We booked a cosy double and it most certainly is cosy! Also right on the front near to a noisy fan of some sort. We checked in, not the friendliest of welcomes but nevertheless we were still excited. The front out door seating area is great, we ordered drinks and asked for some nibbles which were on the menu to be told that the kitchen was shut until 5 30. The nibbles consist of bread olives and nuts, surely a chef is not needed for this? Anyway no lemon or lime in the Gins, minor detail I know but they weren’t cheap. Staff are very young and lack some knowledge and attention to detail. Harry was brilliant however. Food was ok in the restaurant. Starter scallops fantastic. Main chateaubriand average. Steak was cold on arrival and had some gristle in it. I expected better for £75. Service great by the blonde haired guy. Breakfast average as I ordered the eggy bread with bacon and maple syrup. No maple syrup would I like honey instead. No thank you. Sausages and bacon were asked to be cooked well done. Came out a bit anemic. There was a decorator working on the outside of the pub who was sanding it down with an electric sander whilst we were eating breakfast. Not great. Check out, definitely not for the faint hearted. You have to strip your own bed! I kid ye not! Empty your own bins. Place everything in black bin liners provided. Place your key, tv remote in plastic seals. Now I totally understand that things have to be done safely for covid but this seemed totally over the top. We had come from a hotel in Whitby where it was very safe but none of this! It felt to me like we were doing the housekeeping job for them. I queried it with the lady who took our payment who stated it was government guidelines. We won’t be staying again unfortunately.

Room Tip: Don’t stay at the front of the hotelier is very noisy and the cosy doubles are very small

The food was superb. Beautiful Shetland mussels, delicious scallops with chorizo. Sublime home made steak pie and a lovely local cheese board!
Breakfast really good lots of decent coffee, a very nice bacon ciabatta sandwich and delicious eggy bread with maple syrup. Lovely team too!
I could not say enough lovely things about the food but..
our sleep experience was very poor
Our room was above the bar, we expected the music to finish at closing time. At 12.20am I sadly had to go down to ask the team to turn this off.
We thought all would be well but then the brightest security lights came on flooding our room with orange light and they stayed on!

We would return but would make clear our expectations for our room at time of booking!

Just to reiterate the food was superb!

Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear about this and have looked into the matter and felt with it, music should be off long before that, and the lights should have been turned off as well. I will ensuring that this does not happen again. Apologies and look forward to your next visit. Many thanks.

We were staying at Studford lodges so booked for lunch at the Fairfax Arms and it didn’t disappoint. Plenty of choice for both the adults and children which included main meals plus paninis.
Really appreciated being told that the children’s pizzas were actually quite large and a 6 and 7 year old trying to go for 3 courses might struggle with one each 🙈 they even struggled with one between two!!
Service was great and nothing felt like too much trouble. Food tasted amazing and can’t fault a thing.
We’ve booked to return next year to the lodges so will definitely be back at the Fairfax in 2021

Very friendly pub/hotel. Very comfortable room with good facilities. Food for both breakfast and evening meal were well cooked and very tasty. My only moan is that with staying for four nights there could have been a little more choice on main courses. Wine choices are limited but very nice all the same. Beer and cocktails reasonably priced. Some of the staff were relatively new to the trade as small errors were repeated on some nights but were overall friendly and helpful. Thanks for an enjoyable stay.

We went to the Fairfax on a Sunday lunchtime for a family 18th birthday celebration - delicious roast pork and pink beef, large portions with a great choice of vegetables and fantastic gravy. The children's portion was a very generous size too. Good selection of wines and the red was served at just the right temperature. The service was excellent and we were allowed to spend as long as we wanted. The chef even did a pudding platter with Happy Birthday on which we hadn't requested but was a lovely touch. We really couldn't fault it and will definitely be back.

We had lunch here this week with a friend, a first visit in almost 3 years that became a truly wonderful experience. We had never dined in the Orangerie before, our waitress claiming rather puckishly that ‘if you walk in to view it, you won’t leave!’ She was right; it is a lovely dining area with full height sliding glass doors that open to an outside patio and allow entry to both the fragrance of the hanging baskets and the song of the birds.
And then there’s the food. We were impressed by the extensive menu and opted for fish and chips, fillet steak and tagliatelle with crispy skin salmon and samphire….all excellent. And then there’s the dessert. We all raved over the lemon curd Eton Mess, made in-house with homemade vanilla bean ice cream, exquisite lemon curd, whipped double cream and garnished with a strawberry.
And then there’s the service. Attentive but low-key, pleasant and professional, the Fairfax made lunch memorable for us all. Long may they continue to do so!
