What makes this hotel 5 stars, are the people that work here. They are exceedingly helpful, attentive and polite. The extra little offerings make this one of my best experiences ever. It was even better than the 5 star all inclusive I stayed in in Mexico last year. Although the fitness centre leaves a lot to be desired, it worked and the hotel offers complimentary passes to a local fitness club. My room had a kitchenette, full-sized fridge, cooktop and dishwasher. The room was spacious and comfortable for everything it included. The hotel offers a light dinner Monday to Wednesday and the most extensive breakfast layout I have experienced outside of an all-inclusive. This hotel was a gem of a surprise!

I rented a suite and it came with no tub, which was surprising. On arrival, the key didn't work and I had to walk all the way back to the front desk to have it reprogrammed, only to have it not work AGAIN when I went back to the room, and had to walk all the way back to the front desk. The desk staff told me to walk back and they would let me in, but that was not a solution... I am a paying customer who deserves a working key. As an elderly cancer patient, travelling on my own, it was very disappointing to not be considered or treated with compassion. Poor customer service.

I have no environmental allergies, but I started sneezing around 5:00 AM, and sneezed on the regular for the remainder of my two-night stay. Musty smell, you can tell the air is not clean or filtered in any way. I now am dealing with sinus draining and a cough from that, which I attribute to poor air quality and lack of any effort to purify air in the building and rooms.

Breakfast food included with the room was more than sub-par; could not even eat it, it was so bad.

If I were the Manager of this location, I would want to know why customers will not stay there again.

Selected this hotel while driving back to Montreal from a Toronto business trip and wanted to get an early head start away from the Toronto city traffic. The Residence Inn is close to and can be seen from 401 but far enough for a quiet night sleep. The hotel is a bit dated however very clean, comfortable and very affordable. The check-in was quick and very friendly. The morning hot breakfast had a very good selection and with all this said I will definitely stay at this location on my next business trip.

Chose this hotel as a one night stop on our trip after reviewing their website. Major renovations make the lobby and first floor appear as if there was some sort of natural disaster, definitely not a very reassuring welcome. The “newly renovated” room was tiny, and poorly finished, where’s the quality control? Definitely not finished in line with standards at other Marriotts I’ve stayed in.
There is only one working elevator, which makes physically distancing from others impossible.
No hot and cold breakfast as advertised on the website; this is due to COVID-19 which is understandable, but should be communicated in advance.
Pool and hot tub shown to be glorious on the website were also found to be out of order with no explanation or warning on the website or when booking. Reading over the reviews this appears to be a common complaint.

A solid 4/10 which could easily upgrade to a 7 by being honest with your guests about the very limited amenities compared to what is advertised.

Hello ForeverBlueJeans. Thank you for your feedback. We take calls daily from guests touching base to inquire how the pandemic has impacted our service levels and amenities. We are always honest and forthright about what they can expect. We do appreciate that staying in a property that is under renovations can be difficult. Without information on your name or date of stay it makes it difficult to address some of your comments. The fact that we are under renovations is on our website. Depending on your method of booking, perhaps you didn't see it or weren't advised if you booked via a 3rd party. Marriott mandates the size and design of the rooms in all their properties. We would not be able offer tiny rooms and still be a Marriott. One of our elevators was required to be available for the construction crew. With fully half of the rooms out of order one elevator has been adequate. I do apologize for the inconveniences you experienced on your visit. Once things return to normal, in all respects, we hope you will give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations. Thank you again.

I stayed at this property while passing through Whitby last week. The property looks great from the outside, but as soon as you step in the front door it looks like a war zone!

There was a small sign indicating that they were changing the floor tiles in the lobby (from July 30th to August 31st ) but from the looks of the rest of the inside it looks like this “renovation” has been going on for some time. The check in desk was a table with a computer on it.

Other concerns were:

Pool had no water in it…… no mention of this on the website
Room numbers were stickers with hand written numbers on the 4th floor.
Elevator was a complete mess…..very dirty and no ceiling tiles.
My room looked like it had not been vacuumed
No toilet paper holder in the bathroom

This property does not even come close to Marriott standards.

Being a long-time Marriott customer I am very disappointed with this property.

Hello JefffromOntario Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for the delay in responding. Due to COVID-19 we are all on reduced hours at reduced staffing levels. The fact that we under renovations is noted on the front page of our website. Navigating the renovations has been challenging during the pandemic. Material and supplies have been delayed, such as the room numbers - they must come from a USA supplier. Nevertheless, there is no excuse and we do apologize for a stay that was not up to the normal Marriott standards. Your comments will be addressed with both the housekeeping and maintenance team. Prior to arriving we called and asked about the pool ( traveling near by and wanted to stay somewhere with a pool so our kids could swim )

Upon arrival the entire lobby is full of people walking around and drinking ( hockey team)

Our hotel room lacking blankets for the pullout couch, tv didn’t work even after calling down several times, finally someone comes up and CANT fix it. Just goes “ oh sorry” there goes watching a movie... this morning we go for breakfast, packed with hockey people again, we order breakfast elsewhere. Try and use the pool and it’s out of order. Front desk girl rude... must be nice to have a min wage job with such entitlement. Why would a hotel sell us a room where the tv doesn’t work and the pool is closed.
suggest calling and confirming everything is in working order prior to coming.

Hello Skturn Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your recent stay at our hotel, the Residence Inn in Whitby. It is most unfortunate that your stay did not meet your expectations. As it happens, the TV system was impacted by changes to the infrastructure external to the hotel which led to service issues beyond our control. Our maintenance people are capable of basic repairs when a TV malfunctions. However, when the problem originates with the system feed into the hotel the only solution is bringing in a trained technician which is what is happening today, Monday. The pool as you know, was fine on Saturday evening. However, there was an incident on Sunday morning with small child having an "accident". It was closed not as a matter of convenience to us, but as matter of health, safety and hygiene for all of our guests so that it could be thoroughly cleaned. We do not deliberately sell rooms with malfunctioning TV's and we do not arbitrarily close the pool. Issues like this are unpredictable and undesirable. Our goal, always, is to have our guests enjoy their stay and want to return. Unfortunately we did not achieve that goal in your case and for that we apologize. It was a last minute booking and since we have never stayed at a 'residence inn' we were unsure what we were going to experience. But it turned out to be a great stay! Right off the 401, check in was polite, easy and fast. The room was spacious (like a little apartment) with a full kitchenette and lots of living room space. The bedroom was cozy with a very soft bed (if you like a firm bed, you might not be so comfortable). The pullout sofa was a king size and the closet had a bag with sheets, pillow and a blanket. Another perk about the room is the usb and outlets on the side tables and desks. Very convenient! The a.c worked well, not too loud. The bathroom was bright and clean. The glass shower doors werent closing properly though which caused the doors to slide open every minute. But the shower head was decent and the stall had shampoo, conditioner and body wash dispensers on the wall.

The pool was busy so we didn't get to enjoy it too much. Not enough chairs to accomodate everyone. We also found the floors were super slippery in there, not sure if it's a cleaner they used?

They have plenty of snacks beside the front desk for purchase. Quite expensive but that's to be expected these days! The full breakfast they offer consists of pancakes(which you could top with whipped cream or jams), round pork or turkey sausages, scrambled eggs, cereals, oatmeal, muffins, fruit salad, toast and bagels. It was a nice breakfast!

Would definitely stay here again while travelling through the area!

I stayed in Whitby unexpectedly when my car broke down on the 401. I was told that I would need to stay three nights, but when my car was ready after just two nights, the staff very kindly cancelled and refunded my last night even though I was outside the cancellation window. The room was very comfortable - luxurious even - but I was glad to be able to leave as soon as I no longer needed it without being charged for the nigh. Thanks Residence Inn!

Knowing that there was a hockey tournament, they were willing to accept over 10 different teams. Inflate the price, with rooms that had no heat, no ice machines working and they threatened a $200 nuisance charge if kids were found in the hallways. Not coming bCk here next year. Holiday Inn or Motel 6 across the way look like better options

Watch out. I booked a room at the residence Inn in Whitby Ontario I have an older dog who has problems with stairs and he has never been on a elevators because he is afraid. Every hotel I stay in I booked a room on the main floor with no problem. Always got the room I booked!!
I booked a 6 week Oct 6 -Nov at this hotel in person (Residence Inn Whitty), I was assured they had a suite on the first floor I left my credit card number. But on my arrival the next day no room on the first floor they had one on the third floor. I told them that was “unacceptable” the man behind the counter said “that’s all they had too bad they can do what they want”. When I told him I was going elsewhere he told me to go and became rude. I left found a room down the street 10.00 bucks cheaper and a nicer staff. The GM was right there and quieted him down but did nothing to resolve the problem

Nothing at the hotel, but there is free charging at the nearby LCBO at Thickson Place in Whitby - 74 Thickson Rd S. There's a mall in the same parking lot with a Starbucks, so you can kill time shopping or sipping a coffee while you charge.
