Detailed Reviews
Quite simply the best B&B I have ever experienced. Arriving mid-afternoon, we were given a guided tour of the premises by the owner Gerry. He is a super chef, but is quite happy for his guests to cook their own meals in his kitchen. He is very charismatic and it is quite clear that he and his lovely wife Valerie are committed to ensuring their guests remember their stay. We spent a very happy couple of hours with Gerry and his neighbour sampling some terrific rum out on the patio, while Gerry regaled us with many hysterical stories. Haven't laughed so much for ages.
The room we had was the Captains Quarters, with its own bathroom and door out onto the patio. The bed was huge and very comfortable. My son and his partner were able to chose an upstairs room with en-suite facilities and they were very happy with their accommodation.
Gerry clearly loves his "work", and as he doesn't provide evening meals for his guests, he recommended the nearby "Explorers Cafe" for a memorable eating experience (see our other review). His choice was spot on and we arrived back to continue our session with Gerry on the patio. A happy time was had by all.......
Breakfast next day was on the front verandah, cooked by Gerry, and was an absolute sight for sore eyes. Absolutely wonderful.
All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend The Charters Inn. Its not just a place to sleep, its an experience to be enjoyed and remembered. Believe me, hosts like Gerry and Valerie are a rarety. The house, rooms and furniture are old but have wonderful character. OK, a Travelodge may be cheaper, but would you enjoy it so much; I seriously doubt it.
My only wish is that I could remember the name of the rum that Gerry "forced" me to have. It was a real beaut..............

My fiancee and I selected the suite (the Pilothouse) Melanie complained about. Frankly, it was a great experience. Yes, the water closet is situated in a, well, a closet!! It was a hoot - a great memory. But then again, the website says "in suite water closet", not ensuite. The balcony is somewhat functional but again, access to it is seasonal!!! My guess is the desk was pulled across the doorway as a safety net for those who cannot comprehend the term "seasonal". On our phone inquiry, the proprietor was upfront with the bathroom closet limitation. Yes, the fireplace is electric and yes it is mounted on the wall in that particular suite - big deal. Note to Melanie: on the Charters Inn website, the term "faux fireplace" means fake fireplace. We saw two rooms that would have fit our needs. We chose the "loo-in-the-closet" suite for its king bed rather than the queen bed and the ensuite with the deep claw foot tub.
The breakfast was excellent - the host divine. The house is a delightful century home from around 1875 with an expansive garden patio area and a good old fashioned front porch. The area is quiet considering the short walk to Midland's main street. We slept well.
If you are not one of those people who just simply has to have ensuite bathing, check out the "loo-in-the-closet" suite.
A final note to the innkeeper: Do update your web photos; the current web view does not do the room justice.

During early May, I and my family stayed with Gerry almost a week. Gerry is a superb host. Each morning's breakfast was a different delight, served beautifully, in the garden. We enjoyed long leisurely moments with wonderful food and conversation. Our family is accustomed to walking as much as possible and Charters is an easy walk from the marina/shore and from the Main street of Midland. We felt very happy to wonder 'into' the centre of town whenever we wanted. We enjoyed walking to different restaurants for dinner. We ate well and at a reasonable cost. We had lovely weather and we lucky to get out on the water. Gerry took us by boat to get a view of the lake and some of Beausoleil Island. It is huge. We walked around Honey Harbour. We stopped to see Honeymoon Bay and Frying Pan Bay. The Group of Seven rank among my favourites and it was thrilling to be able to be in the landscape that inspired them. I was also pleased to see that the town of Midland are building a new art school for the community. We went to see the town of Petang and their wonderful museum (C. Beck's store). The family did some other "sights" by car.
Thank you Gerry for all the lovely food, the fun (!!,) and for sharing his wonderful home with us. We came exhausted to stay with you and at the end of a week left relaxed and happy.
If it had been possible to stay longer, we would have. (so we hope to return)

A short one night stay, good location excellent service. Host was welcoming and 'WOW" does he know how to cook, I don't generally eat pancakes but the best ever pancakes, lots of fruit interesting presented. Gerry cooked, served 3 tables, kept the coffee cups refilled and had time to chat. Washroom in room too small but the breakfast made it an over the top stay.

I would not normally write a review for a place I had booked on line, but ended up cancelling as the other couple we were travelling with did not like the idea of the washrooms the way they were. I cancelled my reservation within 24 hours, allowing plenty of time for others to reserve during, almost a month away. I received a phone call several hours later after cancelling my reservation from the owner of the bed & breakfast, asking me why I had cancelled and that it cost him $12 for the cancellation, I made mention that we were not staying in the area, as this was also part of the reason, we are moving further along our trail on our trip. I found this phone call unnecessary and quite ignorant, I'm not sure what the owner was attempting to accomplish, was he expecting me to pay for that $12 cancellation fee although there was free cancellation fees advertised.

Firstly I'd like to thank Gerry for his wonderful hospitality over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
To be honest A Charters Inn wasn't our original first choice of B&B in Midland, but our previous favourite has closed down so we went on the hunt for a new 'home away from home'. The previous reviews for A Charters Inn were pretty compelling so I booked us for a 3 night stay.
The House itself is a beautiful Victorian home with many original features and nooks which Gerry proudly talked us through. We were the first guests to arrive so we got to look at all of the bedrooms and they are all well decorated and immaculately clean.
We were informed of some of the best local attractions and also best local restaurants in Midland and surrounding areas which we should try to visit. (Explorers Café and Mad Michaels being our favourites)
To say that the breakfasts were delicious doesn't do justice to the skill which Gerry showed - you can absolutely see (and taste) his passion and flair for cuisine. My favourite was the roasted duck benedict with béarnaise sauce, although the scrambled eggs with truffle oil and shitake mushrooms was also pretty special.
My partner and I will absolutely stay here again next time we visit Midland and I encourage others to do the same.

We very much enjoyed our stay here at the end of the season. The room was nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. The location is great - just on the edge of the pretty little downtown - and the old house is just wonderful. Due to it being an old house there is only one shower that all the guests share, but this was just fine for us. Gerry was extremely accommodating of my very strict diet and prepared a wonderful, healthy breakfast just as I had requested. We were extremely pleased. The off-season price we payed was very reasonable. Recommended!! :)

The Charters Inn, in Midland , Ontario is a very nicely maintained older home full of warmth and charm. The owner Gerry goes out of his way to make sure your stay is comfortable and that you feel RIGHT at home,. The rooms are very very clean, nicely decorated and your privacy is respected. You are able to come and go as you please at any time. If you so choose to mingle with other quest there is a beautiful back patio area with plenty of sitting areas, a gas outdoor fireplace and a very relaxing hammock ..There is a refrigerator available for refreshments and the host is a very friendly gentlemen who will join you to share stories and a beverage or two. He is a generous soul who will offer you a beverage from his own personal bar if you so wish. The house is located walking distance to the main street core and the waterfront The Miss midland is a very enjoyable 2!/2 hr cruise of the Georgian Bay area.. Sites to see, things to do or just chill and relax.

We were under the impression that our bedroom in this B&B has an ensuite bathroom. We were sorely mistaken. Our so called "ensuite" bathroom was a closet with a toillet crammed into it. Whether you are a man or a women, you cannot shut the door while you are doing your business. The fireplace, portayed on the website, is not on the floor, but a gaudy, mirrored, wall fixture that we didn't even use despite the cold weather. Our walk out porch was blocked by a writing desk, which was for the best, because it technically wasn't a porch that had physical access. Why didn't it have physical access? It was blocked by a writing desk with no explanation of why it was not accessible.
We were unpleasantly surprised to discover that we had to share a shower with six other people, despite the fact that we thought we had our own ensuite bathroom.
The only saving grace to my boyfriend's 50th birthday celebration, was that Gerry, the proprietor was an excellent host and chef. This was out worst experience ever at a Bed and Breakfast and we have stayed at quite a few in the past and have never been this unpleasantly surprised.
