Detailed Reviews
I read a really bad review of this place, "what a dump" I beleive it said. well, I certainly do not think the place is that. the rooms are nothing fancy, but they are clean. the place is run by some really hospitable , genuine people. there is a great pub, on the main floor. also downstairs, there is a great spot to catch bands. I once saw the band "ten pound sledge" down there. what a blast. the place is worth staying at for the entertainment value alone! also, there is an excellent restaurant , just off the main lobby.

We spent a Saturday night here after travelling in our '74 Datsun. My husband was thrilled that we could park right outside our door so he could keep an eye on his "baby". For an old motel, it was spotlessly clean and some upgrades had been done.

I just stayed there for seven nights and was a great stay. Would recommend to stay here, very comfortable rooms and the best restaurant if japanese or korean cuisine is your choice. The owner is first rate and very accomodating. I very much enjoyed my stay and will definitely return to see the wonderful staff and owner. Thanhs again Michael.

We had reservations for months, after looking at everything on the internet, it looked pretty good. Then we got there and it was disgusting. We walked in to the dump and said we'd like to see the room first before paying. I guess this happens alot cuz when we went back with the key 2 min. later and cancelled the stay, the guy didn't even ask why. I must say the only way to describe it was that I felt unclean. We also emailed head office and told them of the condition of the "hotel" and they said thanks and they'd look into it. (yeah, right) I'll make sure to drive by this next summer and see if things have improved. This just goes to show you that they can sure doctor up some photos for the internet, this place might have looked like the pictures about 30 years ago.

The room was so dirty and gross that we opted to keep our luggage in our car rather than risk contamination. every piece of furniture was sticky and icky. The bathroom had dead bugs everywhere. We could not bring ourselves to take a shower. We skipped the free breakfast since given the general yucky factor we had no desire to try the food. The place seemed quite deserted. A car with no air in its tires was parked outside and seems to have been parked there for months if not more.Unfortunately, it was too late for us to move to a different hotel and our room was pre-paid but I would not recommend this hole to anyone. Ever. We were there only for one night so we did not expect anything fancy but I have stayed in many hostels in the past and even there I never felt too disgusted to allow my luggage to enter the room and I am yet to discuss the general smell of the place. In short- HoJO should be ashamed to have this place as part of their chain. The probability of me booking a HoJo anytime soon has been dramatically reduced.

I was at the Sutton Park for one night (now it's a HoJo - but I highly doubt they've had time to fully update it, note the lack of photos on their site). There's open access to the hallways and the window in the room was broken which made for a very nervous sleep. It's a very dimly lit, dingy hotel, not well finished - I was thrilled to leave in the morning.

The building is run down and old. The room, dirty. For ~$180 (tax incl) I expect better. This place is on par with an $80 motel. Don't drink the coffee.

Would give this standard Howard Johnson a 3 rating; if they eliminated the terrible musty smell in the rooms, and cut their rates by 50%. Only stayed here because other hotels were booked. Lodging in area is way overpriced, especially this poor motel.

Stayed because it was the last place available for a large group during the busy highland games. There is a permanent musty smell to the whole place, especially the rooms. The "breakfast included" was ample, but all the cheapest of quality/cooking (so much so that despite the extra cost, we opted to eat elsewhere the 2nd and 3rd mornings). "Free wi-fi available" doesn't mean it's working. Everything is seriously out of date in the decor and maintenance. Many rooms had problems with ants and earwigs - one traveller even crushed a beetle, only to find it still there that evening, after housekeeping had been in!
Only advantages were the friendly staff and proximity to town.

The beach is not within walking distance. Perhaps a five minute drive. There are a couple of restaurants a few steps away and a grocery store almost next door. The breakfast included is very plentiful. If you don't see something you like just ask Micheal. He is very accommodating.
