We rented the Inn for several days for our intimate wedding gathering. As soon as we saw it, we fell in love. All of our guests could not stop talking about how absolutely gorgeous the property and the inn itself are. Everyone kept mentioning how they would like to come back! It is rustic, extremely spacious, and words cannot do the grounds justice. There was more than enough space for everyone to have privacy and their own bathrooms. Nancy was extremely communicative and friendly as well. We will definitely be going back in the future!!

I can not praise this Inn highly enough. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome. We were given lots of handy advice and tips on everything to get the most out of our visit including local areas to visit and eat. The owners were very friendly and took plenty of time to aquaint us with the area and local history. Special mention goes to Martha who not only cooked our excellent breakfasts (including catering for my wifes dietary needs) went out of her way to make our stay very special. The Inn had lots of local historical character, is spotlessly clean with appointed rooms. Fantastic position near Algonquin Park and great views over the lake with free use of canoes an added bonus. The Inn lived up to and exceeded all our expectations. Thank you for our stay.

The owners, Nancy & Sid, their gracious and genuine hospitality, the drop-dead gorgeous Muskoka setting and the warm appeal of the inviting vintage decor all played a large part in making our wedding at the Portage Inn the best night of our lives. Our 120 guests, many of whom are seasoned travelers and many of whom are seasoned locals, were absolutely gobsmacked from the moment they pulled in the parking lot -- across the board.

The whole place looked amazing and the huge new stone patio with a view over the lake stole the show, but what truly made the party so special was Nancy & Sid's world-class, top of the line hosting -- the atmosphere of "Welcome to our home, we are honored to have your as our guest and truly happy to share with you this beautiful little corner of the world". There is genuine thoughtfulness and care in everything they do, and it shows everywhere you look. You can feel it.

From the very first stage of planning, Nancy lent her wisdom and support, making great suggestions to overcome obstacles and being amazingly accommodating in meeting our requests. Her advice is nearly always flawless and her proactive, can-do approach to solving problems is a fantastic comfort when stressing out over issues like unexpected foul weather or special-needs guests.

In addition to the classically beautiful location and the warmth and convenience of the facility is the house caterer, The Gourmet Cottage. Again, our guests -- many of whom are hardcore foodies and have attended dozens of weddings and catered affairs -- were completely blown away. The chicken and salmon were moist, cooked exactly right for all 120 portions, and the brownies were hands-down the best I've ever had, ever. The food was simply superb, and the service was no less. Everyone working for them wore a smile the entire day, even the guy flipping burgers in pouring rain for the afternoon BBQ part of the event. We tried to convince him to come in under a tent until the rain subsided, but he was genuinely happy to stay out there & make our food (which needless to say, was divine!).

The bottom line is that if you're looking somewhere to hold an event in the Huntsville area, I can pretty much guarantee you will add profoundly to the outlook for its success by choosing to have it at the Portage Inn. There really isn't another place like it...you'll see!

Outstanding, awesome, fabulous, gorgeous...I can go on and on. The Portage Inn and its hosts are the BEST.

If you are looking for the perfect place for a restful time a way / a retreat / family reunion / wedding, check out The Portage Inn. This is a beautifully restored 100 + year old inn, with bed and breakfast rooms each with their own bathroom. They also have a two level chalet that can be rented as a whole or upper and lower levels separately.

I stayed with a group of friends in the upper portion of the Chalet. It was the perfect getaway for a few days. I definitely want to stay there for a longer period of time.

The gracious owners/operators Nancy and Sydney Kirkpatrick made the visit even more enjoyable. Thank you!

This is a lovely old inn on a winding Muskoka road on Peninsula (Pen) Lake outside of Huntsville. The owners are authors and they are very interesting people with an absorbing book collection, although I really only had time to chat with proprietor Nancy. This family-run operation is nicely situated with lake views, beach right there, lovely rooms, bar/breakfast room all kept in charming period style (the inn dates from the 1800s). The breakfast was lovely and varied with fresh orange juice, eggs, fruit, yogurt, basically everything one could ask for. Price was very reasonable. Their website mentions they donate their inn for use for community/charitable purposes so that says something about the owners--something good. I highly recommend this place for a holiday or business stop-over (I was there on conference, held off-site). Would love to return in the summer or later when the colours turn.

From the moment we checked in (and we did arrive a little early) the owners were extremely helpful. We were able to launch our boat close by and had 2 lakes to choose from, Lake of Bays or Penn Lake. We chose Penn Lake this time and were able to catch both small mouth bass and pike. We stayed at the B&B and the room was comfortable and had a beautiful view of the lake. Our breakfasts were delicious. The Inn is full of old age charm and the hospitality provided by Nancy, Sid and their children is second to none. Although the weather was not ideal it is a beautiful place to curl up beside the fireplace and read a good book (the inn has an extraordinary library) or play a friendly game of pool. Huntsville is only a 5 minute drive for those who want to do some shopping . Thanks Nancy and Sid we will be back! Your place is spectacular!

We stay at B&B's regularly and this is one of the best. Our hosts were not only friendly but very interesting to say the least. Great conversationalist with an excellent knowledge of the area and it's activities. The building is full of history and charm. Rooms were clean and comfortable.
If you like water activity, hiking or just kicking back with a good book, which their library is stocked with, this is an excellent place to check into. Local restaurants are an easy drive, and have a variety to suit the palate. There is an large outdoor patio with BBQ's, at the inn, if you want to BYOF. We will be returning soon.

This B & B is on a long, winding road (North Portage Road) but the destination made up for the drive. The building dates from 1889 and we had a lovely room with a lake view. I went for a walk around the grounds and came to the front and was surprised by 3 deer grazing on fallen apples just across the road. What a lovely surprise! They calmly moved on. And - the best experience was the lady who was looking after the place for her cousins. My husband had spilled spaghetti sauce all down his light coloured pants. This lovely lady immediately offered to wash and dry his pants and then had to do it twice because the stains did not come out the first time. She used stain removed and re-washed and dried the pants. How many places have you been to get this kind of service!

I held high expectations for my visit based on the reviews and the photos of the gorgeous gardens, but learned that the chalet is a very different property from the Inn. It runs independently as an 'efficiency unit' and required us to clean up at the end of our visit. We noted that the previous guests had not cleaned very thoroughly. The maintenance needs of the chalet are significant and have not all been met. All in all, my expectations were not met as this property is quite distinct to the very beautiful Inn.

A lovely rustic old Inn with all the modern convieniences. Rooms are large with comfortable firm beds. We had a small fridge, plates, wine glasses, cutlery, a kettle for tea and a coffee maker. The owners are top notch. Very friendly and accommodating and they serve a fantastic home cooked breakfast that keeps you full until dinner. We will definitely be back.

"We have stayed twice. Room 7 was large with a large bathroom and a wonderful lake view. This time room 2 (Wild Rose) doesn't have a view of the lake but has a king bed, as opposed to Queen. It's hard to pick a favourite. Both are excellent."
