My daughter and I enjoyed the value priced Spa Package which included High Tea, Dinner, Breakfast and a Spa credit. It was truly a delightful experience. Meals were amazing, with wonderful choices. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The Spa treatments were excellent as well. We can’t wait to go back.

My three sisters and I visited the Northumberland Inn and Spa for an overnight this week and we are delighted to say we had a wonderful time together. As sisters, we don’t get together often enough, and the staff at the Inn welcomed us in a way that immediately made us feel relaxed and at ease. In the well-appointee lobby, we registered easily while sipping Artisinale tea, delicately spiced. The tea led me to believe we were in for some gastronomic delights: and, I was right. The chef and sous chef do a wonderful job with a wide-ranging menu centred on local, seasonal produce, prepared and served with care. From cumin spiced baby carrot soup, to salmon and dill sandwiches at high tea, and avocado toast on home made sour dough bread at breakfast (with cappuccino or latte, but of course...), we ate slowly and with much enthusiasm! Our spa treatments were excellent too— exfoliating body scrubs in softly lit, aroma therapy filled rooms were an oasis for the soul.

Naturally, we all had concerns about covid19 and precautions taken by the inn. We are happy to report that every possible precaution was taken, and the Inn and beautiful grounds, are immaculately clean and cared for.

What more can I say? We wish the Inn much success and we hope future clients will spread the word about this tranquil place of rest and gourmet delight, as we will continue to do. Thank you to all the staff from all of us.

My husband and I had a 4-night getaway recently at Northumberland Heights Wellness Retreat and Spa. It is located about 1 hour east of Toronto. We discovered this place with a Travelzoo promotion which included accommodations, meals (breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner) and a spa credit. This was our first hotel stay during the pandemic and this place has 14 rooms and when we visiting it was not fully booked so we felt more comfortable with fewer guests around. They also arranged meal times to limit the number of guests in the dining room at the same time.

The staff were generally friendly and accommodating but to be honest, I would expect that the level of service would be even higher given the quality of the resort that the owners are striving for.

You can tell that a lot of money has been spent on the locker rooms and treatment areas, however the rooms could use refreshing. I would also recommend choosing a garden suite for your own patio with loungers to use.

I was able to experience three different spa treatments during my stay- udvartana, wellness fusion therapy and reflexology. I have never had a male therapist before but he was very professional and made me feel at ease. It was a bit frustrating that my husband could only get a massage on certain days as the RMT has limited availability. In the end, it worked out for me as I ended up using his spa credit!

I also enjoyed the morning yoga classes and on the last day, we were able to have the class outdoors as the weather was suitable. I didn't have an opportunity to walk all the nature trails but it is a good option for those who want somewhere close to walk/run.

The best part of our experience was the food. The food was fresh and tasty. While not everyone may enjoy the Indian themed dinners, we thought it was the best Indian food that we have ever eaten (and we eat Indian food frequently in Toronto). As we were staying for 4 nights, the owner had offered for us to select something off the regular dinner menu if we wanted a change, but we liked the Indian food so much, we had it for all 4 dinners!

I visited Northumberland Heights for an overnight stay and had a lovely experience. I arrived before check-in time to enjoy lunch on a sun filled patio overlooking the property, with a view of Lake Ontario in the distance. An walk through the wooded walking trails and a massage made for a relaxing afternoon. Dinner was delicious (I had Rainbow trout) and the service was excellent, although the wine was overpriced at $14 a glass.

The building, rooms, and decor are beautiful with elegant touches of Indian design and an emphasis on the four elements of air, earth, fire, and water. The overall vibe is one of relaxation and elegance, which is perfect. The staff is friendly and helpful, an everyone seems genuinely committed to ensuring that guests have a great experience. I was even visited by the owner/manager during dinner, who enquired about my experience so far.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there is some room for small updates that would make a big impact on guest experience. A nightly fire in the fire pit, additional seating on the property, maybe a hammock in the gazebo, and a garden area would go a long way. For a no-cost and immediate impact, consider allowing guests to use the outdoor hot tubs until 10:00 (instead of 7:00) to provide some time after dinner.

Overall, I really enjoyed my overnight stay and would like to visit Northumberland Heights again with a friend. There is fair value for the price and, with some small updates, guests would be able to take full advantage of the outdoor spaces. Thank you for a relaxing stay!

Other than seating on deck with restaurant service, there were no chairs to enjoy in the expansive yard/grounds. If you were in an upper level room there is no balcony either so unless you had a patio with chairs in a lower level room you could only sit at the restaurant patio area. Not something we wanted to do in our swimsuits after a hot tub to read a book. No chairs around fire pit either (and no evening fire).

Yard is large and beautifully surrounded by trees with a small view to the lake. Unfortunately, the fountain was run down and not working and filled with algae and tadpoles.

The trails were not well manicured or well marked. Also lots of poison ivy, poison oak, etc. Beautiful if you dared to go anyways which we did (got eaten alive).

Chef Liam and the food were fantastic! The cooking demos were a lot of fun and the patio area with fire tables was gorgeous! VERY limited shade anywhere - no awnings, umbrellas or shade gazebos (except small run down one in yard that needs fixing).

Yoga classes were okay. Out on the lawn due to Covid.

Only activities were one yoga class and cooking demo per day, everything else was additional cost spa services - which were quite expensive as well.

We made our own fun, enjoyed chatting with the other guests, the spa (pedi and massage) and hot tubs, but VERY glad I didn’t pay full price.

Proper staffing (possibly Covid issue) is required especially since the same girl was serving breakfast in the restaurant and doing pedicures and massages in the afternoon. (Go Pam - you are amazing!) Dory at front desk is super kind and very helpful! Also if you get a massage by Fred be sure to start by telling him you don’t want to talk or you may be “healthy weight” shamed or hear about his support from Trump the whole time.

SO MUCH potential here! I hope the owner grabs some chairs, a gazebo or awning or two, hires a handyman and gets proper staff. Taking the time to implement suggestions from guests and adding a pool would take this place to the next level!

Went with my girlfriends for one night package. Our experience began with a complimentary pickup from the Via Rail Train Station to the resort where we had a seamless check-in process and a refreshing drink. The rooms are very spacious for 2 and well appointed. All overlook the back premises so lush greenery with privacy. There are some rooms with back patios as well. We went during a weekday and practically had the resort to ourselves. Our package included high tea, dinner, breakfast and lunch plus a spa credit. The food for each meal was delicious and generous in portion. There are some great seating areas outside to relax with friends in a peaceful, serene environment. The staff and owner tried to accommodate every request and truly made us feel welcome. We also had a birthday amongst the group and she was made to feel special by the staff as well. The spa service we chose was the foot facial which is a luxurious 75 minute treatment and pedicure. And one sits in a massage chair so that it does feel like a full body treatment for the entire time. We also took advantage of the yoga which is available at 10am every morning and the instructor customizes the level to participant's capability. This was done outside because of the great weather. The only thing we did not experience was the hot tub because the weather was too hot.

And we were driven back to the train station by the owner who spent time that morning also bringing us breakfast and giving us a nice background to the spa/resort. This is a more intimate experience as there is only capacity for about 35 guests in total so I would recommend a group event here and it is not far from Toronto.

A couple of minor suggestions. It would be great if they allowed us to bring our own wine to dinner and just charge a corkage fee. Also, it was difficult even with instructions on how to use the TV in the room. We had a good laugh but it should be a more standard way to power on. But this did not detract from the overall experience. Would highly recommend this place.

Overall a nice place. Quite loud for a wellness center. On top of the noise from guests the vacuum at 0900 hours (which some are still resting) and fire alarm at 0715am.

Hot tubs close at 1900 hours??? I want to sit in the hot tub before bed.
One piece of toast with your eggs without butter on it and then give you hard butter??? If you want an additional item ie. sausage with your bacon, thats an extra charge?? These things took away from the experience.

I thought it was expensive going in, almost more than St Anne's which is a 5 diamond spa but I thought heck I"ll give it a try maybe it would be worth it. Well for the little things that are mentioned I would spend $100.00 extra to go to St. Anne's. Although not a bad place but could have been better if they were more open to not being so stringy.

The dining room manager was absolutely awesome and amazing! She made my night. The chef was amazing and really cared about what he did. All the servers were great. My massage was only OK. Gentleman was much older and really didn't have the stamina for an hour long good massage and needed to be coached??

I was quite shocked after booking with travel zoo they went and charged a service fee of $250.00 which I did not understand this should have been included in the price. This and the things mentioned above are just the little things that did not make it excellent which is a shame.

I would highly recommend not charging so much and stop being so stingy.

No mini fridge in room no coffee maker?

It was a very nice touch when you returned to your room after dinner with a nice little candle and chocolate.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking out time to leave a review for us on this forum. We sincerely regret that you had an experience which is certainly not indicative of the service levels that we pride ourselves on. The concerns you have highlighted are far from our usual standards. The entire Dining Team at Northumberland Heights take personal pride in providing our guests with only the best of what a meal has to offer. The concern highlighted by you has been brought into our Team’s attention and we would like to take this opportunity to mention to you that we present each dish as per the exact description written on the menu. We do not charge any extra fee if it is already included in the description and is a part of the whole dish. We would also like to take this opportunity to mention that on booking from Travel Zoo, the extra Service Fee which is charged on top of your bill is always mentioned and notified to all the Guests before they make a booking. We would never charge an extra service fee without giving our guests a proper intimation prior to their final booking with us. We at Northumberland Heights, genuinely feel that the feedback is provided by only those guests, who see potential in us and consider that we will be able to improve the procedures and provide better services for all our guests in near the future. Friendly staff, comfortable beds. Delicious tea choices for Tea service. Manicured lawns and a few trails (trails need to be marked)

Menus are short yet offer vegetarian or vegan, meat and fish daily specials. My favourite was the ricotta heirloom toast with a poached egg for breakfast.

No complimentary sweats for travelzoo guests, bummer. (And we still had to top up $$$)

Something for management to consider upon reviewing....
* have someone proofread the menus or printed materials, (full of spelling and grammar errors) before laminating;
* recognizing Covid has taken its toll on businesses, investing in your property upgrades with paint (not patches of), deep cleaning carpets, etc. could brighten up the establishment;
* Advise guests upon registration that ‘service charges’ are included in the final bill of any meal and/or services, and how much!
* A guest was constantly smoking in the front entrance area, we thought the property was designated “smoke-free (signs should be posted accordingly.

As other reviewers and ourselves included, who have been to other spas, from BC, Muskoka, Toronto, Ste Anne’s, etc., Northumberland has potential but needs to review and invest.

I travelled with a friend to enjoy the one night package, including three meals and high tea.
The facility was scrupulously clean, and we felt very covid-safe. The staff was welcoming and helpful.
Our room was spacious and comfortable. The spa service (Wellness Fusion Therapy) was top-notch and included reflexology and hot stone massage.
The meals were good, and the chef was very responsive and knowledgeable about food allergies. If you have food sensitivities, let them know when you book, and they will be ready for you. A word of advice: if you are celiac, tell them that you are "celiac" rather than "gluten free".
We enjoyed it so much that before we checked out, I booked a weekend for myself and my husband.
The package price includes everything except alcohol. If you book the package, they add an automatic "service charge" to your bill equivalent to the tip, but you can also tip on top of the service charge if you wish.

My sister and I came out to Cobourg by train to visit this scenic, relaxing and lovely spa in early September 2020 and very much enjoyed our weekend stay. The hosts, owners and staff were friendly and super accommodating; the grounds clean and very well kept. There’s a high staff-to-guest ratio, so it was never difficult to find someone if you had a question or needed help with something, etc.

The food in particular was outstanding. Chef Andrew has crafted an amazing menu, all prepared from scratch, and every meal we ate during our stay was memorable. It seems they’ll be opening a restaurant in early October which will be open to the public and we hope to visit again and eat more of Chef Andrew’s food! Highly, highly recommended. The wait staff in the restaurant are super friendly and helpful as well.

The hot tubs are a great addition to the lovely and relaxing grounds. There’s tons to explore around the immediate property itself as well as the woodsy nature trails extending around the property. We attended a yoga class that was approachable and great for all levels and there are many oases to be found around the property if you wish for quiet, peaceful, meditative time.

We found the owners particularly gracious; they are lovely and do everything in their power to ensure their guests’ comfort. We arranged for a ride to and from the train station with them before our stay since we have no car which was very convenient and makes the spa more accessible for everyone.

Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a sweet, peaceful and nature-accessible getaway close to the city! <3
