An excellent place to stay when waiting for the NS-NL ferry. Very convenient located near the ferry terminal.
The entire facility has obviously been around for quite some time and it shows - BUT - the staff is doing a great job with what they have to work with. The staff friendliness does make up for any deficits. There is nothing specifically wrong, it just feels well past it's 'best-before' date.
The far from gourmet restaurant offers satisfying but very basics. If your diet is challenging, the basic hamburger / hot dog / fish & chips - is going to be a challenge.
BUT - on the up-side, no matter what could be improved - the friendly staff more than makes up for it.
We actually are looking forward to staying there again in the near future.

My Mum and I spent 2 nights here and rented a chalet. It was amazing. We each had a large bedroom with super comfy bed and our own bathroom. My Mum's even had a jacuzzi tub. Huge kitchen with full sized appliances and everything you could possibly need. Large living room with propane fireplace and big screen tv and also a large covered patio with a BBQ. So much space and super comfortable! The staff here are lovely, the outdoor pool was great and of course the restaurant is legend for good reason. An older hotel but an absolute gem.

I'd say this motel is strictly average - the whole place felt really rickety and cheap, and it's actually not much less expensive than the Best Western which is also located in North Sydney (and where we'll stay the next time we're here). It is really close to the ferry, but I didn't feel like there was much else to recommend it.

I recently had a 2 week stay at the Clansman to self-isolate after a trip outside the Atlantic Bubble. I had a great experience. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I had many calls down to the front desk to ask about garbage/laundry/check-out protocols and they patiently answered all of my questions. The room was equipped with a mini fridge, microwave and coffee pot so I was able to have family drop off groceries to me and make a few of my own meals. For other meals, the I would call down to the restaurant (delicious!) and the staff would deliver them outside my door. The room also had a table the chairs (so I didn't have to eat in bed) and it was large enough to lay my yoga mat down to do some exercise. There was a thermostat to adjust the temperature as well as an overhead fan for warmer days. The Clansman made my stay very comfortable and I appreciate their great service! Would definitely recommend.

This place makes Schitt’s Creek look like a 5 star motel. Sadly the owner has done nothing to upgrade from 1972. Bathroom tile has mold and there’s no shower head so it’s like how one would imagine showering with a fire hose would be. Only positive would be the mattress. Firm and comfortable. Pillows not so much.
I guess having a captive audience of weary travellers waiting for or disembarking the ferry is all you need to not spend a dime on even the most basic upgrades. Didn’t dare dine in their restaurant or take a dip in their pool.
Highly recommend you look elsewhere for a place to lay your head.

Always happy here with its central location, comfortable beds, friendly staff, good restaurant. This time I had a suite. As I sat in the livingroom watching TV in the evening, I was treated to being also able to watch the sun go down and see a beautiful sunset. The bedroom also had a tv, and the window there faced East which brought in the welcoming morning light.

Found this hidden gem last minute when we had nowhere to stay! Two dogs and it was perfect! The staff was soooo friendly and you felt like you were in your own hometown. Dated but cozy ! Love it ! The outdoors offered so much but we didn’t get a chance to explore ! Such a friendly family place ! The night manager Loren allen was AMAZING!!!! Thank you so much !

Clansman Motel North Sydney NS

On a recent trip to Newfoundland our brand new truck broke down & we stayed at the Clansman for 2 full weeks. The staff were beyond kind, helpful & very accommodating. Bonus that there is a restaurant attached so we ate most nights there, amazing food. Laundry facilities on site, beautiful pool & grounds very well kept. Pet friendly & our two little girls always got their morning rubs from the staff.
This is & will be our go to place in the future when we finally get to go on our vacation to Newfoundland. Thank you all for making our bad situation comfortable & for easing some of the stress for us.

My wife and I stayed here last year for one night prior to taking the ferry to Newfoundland. We had stayed here on three previous occasions but not since 2001. The motel has certainly gone downhill!. It appears that no money is put in to maintaining the property. Everything seems old and shabby.

On this trip we had to get up early (3:30 AM) for the 0600 ferry departure. I discovered upon trying to shower that someone had removed the shower head which made it seem like I was standing under a garden hose. I got dressed and went to the office. Naturally no maintainence person was on duty - it was 8:30 PM on Sunday. The person at reception deducted CAD $14.37 from our bill. Never did find out what this odd amount represented.

There was an old refrigerator & microwave in our room. Loud clanking noises were heard every time the compressor in the fridge cycled on. Turned it off! Then, we had water dripping from the freezer section. Finally got to sleep to be awakened at 11:45 by noise in next room. I guess there's little or no sound-proofing between rooms.

Needless to say, we won't be back again.

Yes I would book it now. They are really nice people and have the standard cancellation policies. There are hotels and cottages all along the Cabot Trail. A little more expensive. We have only stayed in Cheticamp on our trips. WE stayed at the Cabot Trails Sea & Golf Chalets. Beautiful 2 room cottage looking right at the ocean. It was a meteorite shower the one night. Amazing! We go every year. The views on the Cabot Trail are amazing but you will get better views by travelling counter-clockwise. If you Google it there are 57 in all. I don't recall seeing that many but there are lots. Bed & Breakfasts, standard rooms, The Keltic in Ingonish is apparently quite luxurious. My wife has stayed there and loved it. Happy travels and if this is your first trip out there, I bet it won't be your last. The best weather is usually the last week or two of July uo until mid August. Enjoy!
