Selkirk Mountain Experience has been listed as a "Best Adventure Travel Company on Earth" by National Geographic Adventure, three times. We are a family owned and operated adventure travel company, based at the Durrand Glacier Chalet, outside Revelstoke BC. This is a remote lodge, accessed by helicopter only. During summer months we offer alpine hiking with over 90 km of trails in a pristine and exclusive setting. Our 18 guests and resident marmots and mountain goats are the only beings using this trail network! In the winter we offer backcountry skiing, in the mecca of alpine powder skiing. Our 96 square km of private tenure offer some of the best skiing on earth, both in the alpine and in the trees. Glades, burns, 30+ summits, 10+ glaciers and the deepest snowpack in the Selkirk Mountains. In addition to the Durrand Glacier Chalet, we have two smaller chalets which we use to do overnight ski trips into the further reaches of our area. All three huts are clean, cozy and beautiful wooden chalets. The Durrand Glacier Chalet is our home base, with 11 private bedrooms and a spacious washroom facility steps from the bedrooms. This facility includes hot running showers, sinks and full indoor plumbing attached to a septic system. We also have a new sauna built in summer 2020 (primarily for winter use). The Durrand has fabulous alpine cuisine, with a private chef and a full staff of friendly, hard-working SME family. Summer trips are three, four or seven day packages, winter trips are seven day packages. We would love to discuss your holiday plans by phone or email. Thank you for your interest.

Spectacularly placed on a knoll in a steep glacial valley, this place offers great food and amazing views. We went for a hiking trip in early September. From the first meeting in the hotel in Revelstoke until the last day everything was done smoothly and professionally. The food is gourmet, healthy, varied, and beautifully served for breakfast and dinner. Lunch is packed to go for hiking. There was a good selection of local beers and wine for purchase as well. The terrain is rugged, and the hiking is serious. There are no easy hikes. The daily guided hikes aim to last about 6 hours, although there are different groups at different paces, and can cover hundreds of meters of elevation change. The chalet is very nicely done. Rustic luxury and communal living. The accommodations are luxurious for where they are, which is different from being 'luxurious'. The rooms are cozy and basic without locks on the doors. The walls are thin enough to hear the people next door whispering to each other in bed. The mattresses are foam. There is indoor plumbing, and hot running water for the showers. The shower stalls and bathroom are kept spotlessly clean. The outdoor deck is great for sunshine, sunset, and stars. Eucalyptus based insect repellent kept the flies at bay.

Thank you for your review. We are glad you were impressed by our washroom area - we love it as well. A nice change from the outhouses (which are special in there own way)! We hope to see you back at the Durrand soon.

This exceptional chalet exceeded my expectations, the location is perfect, the hiking is endless and beautiful all around. You have many options for Hikes and peaks and the guides will give you lots of Information about the area and the lodge. We hit it at the exact right time for the flowers, the weather was great, the goats came for visits every day, and the staff were all there to please and make your experience unique. It was my first time there and I am positive I will return. It was truly special.

Visiting SME in March of 2022 was an experience I'll never forget. A friend and I joined for the classic ski week and were not surprised to be one of a few first time visitors. Most were returning guests. Our particular group were all similarly strong and enjoyed each others company greatly. I suspect most groups are similar. The skiing was the best of my life. Several days of deep powder followed by a few warmer days of heavier snow down low. The runs were moderately steep, with several parts of 30-40 degrees. Majority of skiing is on very nice rolling glaciers. Finding good snow, even on warm days was not difficult. The climbing was a challenge. The pace varied day by day, guide to guide but generally was a brisk walk on flatter terrain and steady slog on the steeper stuff. Being physically fit and prepared to climb 5k feet, 8 miles and 7 hours per day, for 7 days is the secret to maximizing your week. If you think you're ready, do a bit more training! The cadence of transitions and breaks was quick to keep the group warm and on schedule. The chalet's and lodges became a welcome contrast to the challenges of the climbing and skiing. Returning each day was the highlight. Hot delicious food awaits. Naps, socializing and 4 course dinners to end each day. Swiss hospitably at it's finest. The recent indoor showers and plumbing were welcome. I'll be processing this week for a long time. If you're considering going - just book it, and start training now.

There really are no words to adequately describe our recent SME Durrand Glacier hiking experience (I’m still processing it) … but that’s not helpful for a review! Where to even start? Every moment of our trip was exceptional, from initial contact with ever-helpful, always responsive Aimee to final touchdown of the helicopter and drop-off by our cool, calm pilot on our last day and the van ride back to town by our friendly driver. Thank you, Tate, for your safe, trusted, wise, knowledgeable and spirited guiding. Thank you, Aidan, for your wry sense of humour and for leading us up to the other-worldly Tumbledown Glacier on a blustery day in the elements. Thank you, Mitscha (sp?) for the abundant, creative, healthy breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners (with always more available for the extra-hungry). Thank you, Eva, for your sparkling energy. And heartfelt thank you, Nicholine, for making us feel welcome in your piece of paradise. It’s clear you deeply love and are passionate about this place you call home and that you want others to experience its magic to the fullest. We were extra-fortunate to find ourselves among a special group of lodge mates on our trip - like-minded, like-spirited hardy hikers up for a challenge. Such great stories and knowledge and adventures shared - and good belly laughs over evening glasses of wine too. As for the hiking … we’ve done countless hikes over the years but none have paralleled this. Every single day’s hike was different - awe-inspiring, sweeping glaciers, carpets of wildflowers, moonscape-like basins, glistening waterfalls, lakes and streams, peaktops with endless vistas and forested knolls (not to mention the ropes, chains & ladders - made comfortably do-able by our helpful guides! 🙂). This was an experience of body, mind, heart and soul. I’ve come away changed by it. Thank you, SME! (Michele & Jacques)

Having hiked on several continents and throughout most of the Canadian Rocky Mountain parks, I feel confident in rating the hiking around the Durrand Glacier as some of the very best I have experienced. The extensive private trail system laid out by the owners provides unparalleled views for every step. The only disappointment was in the hut experience. Of the half dozen or so Western Canadian huts I have where I have been a guest, the food here was the poorest I have experienced. 2of 4 evening meals were vegetarian; not that I mind vegetarian, but they were unimaginative and lacking in protein. After a day of strenuous hiking I found these meals to be lacking in quantity, quality and sustenance. Nonetheless, I do recommend the experience for the hiking, but if you have a big appetite you might want to bring snacks.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your visit to our lodge. We are glad that you enjoyed the hiking experience! We are sorry that we were not able to meet your expectations regarding the food. We wish you would have spoken to us at the lodge as there is always additional eggs available to add to your breakfast, extra meat or vegetarian sandwiches for lunch and second helpings available at après and dinner. Again, we appreciate your review and we enjoyed having you at the Durand.

Words and pictures don’t do this place justice. Wonderful, attentive staff, amazing food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and an environment like no other. Expectations more than met. So much more exploring to cover than was possible in our three days. Can’t wait to visit again.

+ The Chalet is very nice and comfortable, proper hot showers and clean toilets. Rooms are comfortable and Nicoline is doing everything for the guests to feel like at home. + The food is simply amazing. The Chef Dan is always cooking something tasty, and don’t expect to be hungry. + Ian, the second guide is very nice and doing everything he can to provide the best ski you can get. On the negative side: - First of all, if you would like to ski as much as possible, don’t go there. On the total of 12 days of skiing that we spent, we never reached the promised 1600 Vertical meters. 1400 meters seems to be a more accurate figure, and no matter if you still want to ski and the conditions are good, you will be confined to the chalet at 3PM. As for the quality of the skiing, it is indeed one of the best skiing areas in the world, but you will be limited by Ruedi's opinions, even if you’re with the other guides. Of course, we agree that safety is the priority that has to lead the choice of Ruedi, but you can't miss the inconsistency of some of the choices. Here is one example: he told us we couldn't ski more because it was extremely cold and a simple injury could become very problematic (which was true), but it doesn't seem to be a problem to push other inexperienced participants beyond their abilities in these circumstances. Or,after descending a beautiful steep slope (we have to admit that we did a few amazing ones), his answer to the question of why we hadn't done more during the week, was that the current conditions didn't allow us to descend steep slopes. - Go with your own group. Otherwise, the mixing of groups can be problematic, because contrary to what is announced on their website, no questions about the skiers' experience are asked before. And don't count on Ruedi to adapt, people who want to do more can't and the slower people have to follow the program he has decided upon. Both group did almost exactly the same itinerary during the week except one day, they were simply following each other with 10 minutes apart. He also won't hesitate to make comments of these participants in front of the others ("Everything she can do, she does it wrong", "he has a problem, he can't even do 1000 meters", "everybody says they can do kick turn until they have to", "Well, they're coming? I don't want to wait for them"). - And finally, Ruedi himself... Briefing in the morning was giving minimal informations. Same during the skiing, the only informations you will get is "Skins on", "Skins off". Often no answers to questions, just follow like a sheep. And above all, don't express your opinion or doubts, certain that he is always right, he will show you that you are wrong and will be resentful towards you.

...but I’ll do my best. From chatting with Aimee (at booking) to filling up on Dan’s amazing cuisine to challenging hikes and an overall atmosphere of welcoming guests, Nicoline & Ruedi have created an incredible space for outdoor enthusiasts. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for creating this eden for all to enjoy. As guests in this great land we must be cognizant of preserving its beauty for future generations.

Who doesn't love being on a helicopter flying into a chalet high in the mountains surrounded by glaciers? This is the first step of the experience. Also, before I forget they take great precautions with Covid-19 exposures. In other words, they have not had any cases of the coronavirus given their program of cleaning and distancing. The helicopter flies over the forest and up the valley and you land beside the main chalet which lies below the mouth of the Durrand glacier. Off the grid experience so you know you are in the wilderness. The meals prepared by their English gourmet chef are incredible. The chalet staff pack your lunch. There are delicious snacks for the afternoon as well. All your food is taken care of. The hiking is in a group or groups and led by young experienced friendly welcoming staff. The trails are very well maintained. Many choices for hiking each day and up to 1100 metres in elevation gain if that is what you are looking for. You can hike to the glacier and alpine ridges full of wild flowers. Lakes, ponds, gentler trails are all around you. There are wildlife so that is another key to your overall hiking experience. Your sleeping accommodations are very simple being a room with a bed and maybe some shelving. That is it. Wifi is available for free, but it is sketchy. Electrical outlets available on the main floor for charging your devices. Real toilets near the rooms and shower facilities.
