Heli skiing is a high end luxury experience virtually anywhere you find it but having experienced over 20 such operations, I have yet to encounter one as good as Mica. This is small group heli, four skiers and a guide sharing a copter with two other groups or for an upcharge, having exclusive use of one copter. While this arrangement can be found at other operations, the lodge at Mica is above and beyond any other backcountry lodge you will find. Rebuilt just four years ago, the new lodge is in a class by itself in amenities, convenience and comfort. Accessible in the winter only by helicopter, and overlooking virgin forest and perched on a ridge above a river, the views are spectacular. With a full bar, gourmet dinning, a private ski room and hot tubs, there is almost everything you can ask for in such an isolated location. Each day the staff takes clients out for world class heli skiing in the surrounding mountains. On days the copter cannot fly, snowcat skiing is available right out of the lodge. Rooms are modern, and comfortable, staff is at your beck and call for anything you would want, and the ski guiding is professional. I have been back multiple times and can not find fault with any aspect of the experience. The greatest issue may be getting a reservation due to a recidivism rate above 90%. Mica ranks among the most expensive in its class but it is a ranking well earned due to what they provide.

There is quite simply no experience like Mica. With only 20 people in the lodge even the "group" trips feel like any other operator's "private". The staff is excellent and food hearty but not particularly gourmet. Rooms are excellent -- border line luxurious. The reason you come is for the powder and it is the BEST in the world. Ego snow on every turn. After coming 4 years in a row I can say my worst run at Mica is better than the best run I have ever had at a resort --either in or out of bounds.

Mica is talked about with such reverence and mystique that I'd be lying if there wasn't a little skepticism in me when I pulled the trigger on a last minute cancellation that opened up hours before I checked the website one hot SoCal evening while dreaming about powder. Unless you get paid to ski (and even then from what I'm told) getting a Mica seat is like opening that chocolate bar and finding a golden ticket. Surely it was all hype. Or at least some hype. It couldn't be that good. Could it? Without hesitation I can say that this was a trip that surpassed all expectations, as lofty as they were. Forget about the cold Canadian white smoke floating over your head turn after turn for just a minute while I offer some thoughts on other aspects of Mica. Safety is paramount when in this type of terrain and Mica's guides and pilots were as professional as they come. In my younger years I worked as a senior mountain guide for a very reputable company in high-altitude and remote environments. The guides at Mica were prepared, disciplined, and at the top of their field. Communication with the pilots was excellent. The safety training was clear and practiced repeatedly. Everyone had radios. Maybe it was because most of the guests had been on multiple trips before (such is the nature of Mica - when you get a seat you tend to keep it) but I felt amazingly comfortable skiing with three other clients and our guide. The lodge is an architectural masterpiece with common areas for socializing and plenty of cozy chairs and fireplaces to relax around. The hot tub on the deck overlooking the lake isn't bad either! I'm not sure exactly how many staff were there but it was plenty to ensure that every need was met quickly and with a smile. At least two chefs are on staff and they plated some delicious and well crafted dinners. Breakfasts were hearty and with variety to accommodate client preferences from all over the globe, which was the case during my trip. My personal favorite was the soup that we had for lunches during the only break from skiing during the day. I didn't expect to enjoy the culinary aspects of the trip nearly as much as I did, which was a nice bonus. The skiing. If you are looking at this review you already know the skiing is mind blowing. Their tenure is huge and varied. Just realize that the weather and snowpack will dictate much of what you ski which is how it should be when safety is the priority. We had everything from high alpine bowls to steep tree lines and it was all epic, just like all the magazines and movies say it is. Work and life got in the way of a repeat trip this year but I'm hoping Paul, Barbara, and Shane will be running such a stellar program when I come back.

I went over for a "once-in-a-lifetime-experience", but ended up booking a trip the following year, and then over again. It is the possibly the best skiing experience money can get you unless you are a sponsored professional. Great staff, great snow, great lodge, great pilots, great company! If you are so lucky you are offered a place with MIca, take it! :)

Response from MicaDarryn, Director of Sales at Mica Heliskiing
Responded May 29, 2013
Yes unprecedented weather conditions were experienced across British Columbia mid March 2013. Accordingly we dealt directly with the affected group and offered an agreeable solution. We are pleased the group has re-booked the same tour in 2014 and we are looking forward to their return.

I would urge anyone thinking of heliskiing to look here first - you are thoughtfully cared for, not over fed, and given the most amazing terrain to ski. Guides best in business, safety a top priority not just a tick box. People with real warmth.

Tucked away above kinbasket Lake is the heli-skiing Mecca ... Mica Heli. If you are lucky enough to be able to get to this place given they are normally booked-up by guests returning year after year you will not be disappointed. Recently voted "Best Heliskiing" by Skiing Magazine in 2011, Mica Heli regularly features in cutting edge ski and snowboarding films such as "All I Can". Mica Heli is a regular podium feature at the Powder Magazine awards. if you have any doubts just look up "Balance of Powder" or any of the Mica clips on YouTube or Vimeo. We could all come up with excuses for not going to Mica but if you truly love skiing, save up, give them a call and sample what they have to offer. It's mind blowing. Richard B.
