Detailed Reviews
What a wonderful resort! Stayed for a week in a one bedroom unit with a kitchenette and everything was clean and comfortable. Had an absolutely amazing view from the balcony! This place had everything we needed: laundry facilities, great internet connection, easy access to the beach, easy access to town, etc, etc. Very friendly, helpful staff as well! We will absolutely return to this resort as it has everything one could possibly need for both long or short term stays.

Truly amazing ocean views from our patio doors. The full moon shining over the water was outstanding! Quick access to the ocean for long beach walks. Well stocked, sparkling clean kitchen (the cleanest I’ve ever seen!) Friendly, helpful office staff. Our minor concerns were dealt with immediately. I highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a mid-range price point and hope to stay here again. It was the perfect place to celebrate my birthday!

We planned to stay for 3 nights but stayed for 9, it was so lovely. We stayed on the ridge in a large studio unit with a nice patio. Great kitchen. Terrible bedding, as the sheets were much too small and the pillows were awful.

The room we stayed in this year was unclean. There was a film of dust on all surfaces, greasy handprint on the wall, light switches not wiped, dirty garbage can, dirty range hood, a dirty tired looking shower curtain, and debris under the bed. I did not appreciate having to wipe down the room before I felt comfortable to stay in it. I reported this to the office and have not had a response except that my concerns would be passed on to the head of housekeeping.

The Madrona Beach Resort is the best location on this stretch of beach and seems to be the most reasonable. We stayed in a roomy 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit right on the beach. The units are still quite new, nicely decorated, bright and very clean. The beds and fold-out sofabed were very comfortable. The staff are very accommodating but unobtrusive. This is a place I will definitely keep in mind for future visits.

Our family has been going to Madrona for 4 years now.. every year it gets better. The location is perfect - right on the beach. We stay at the condos up top and the views are beautiful. Every morning you wake up to sunshine and the tide way out... The condos are nice and family friendly. There is lots to do (tennis, playgrounds etc) and the staff are friendly.
The prices are on par with what you pay for high season in a resort town and very much worth it.

It’s all so dreary. I have waited for the courtesy of a reply to my letter from Madrona Resort before commenting on this site. I believe they were due respect to allow them to sort this unfortunate episode. With their reply in hand, I can now with a clear conscience present this review.
It should be noted that Madrona isn't a typical resort in the expected sense. While the website indicates this is a premier destination resort, the reality is far different.
"As each of our units is individually owned, I would also like to pass on your comments to the Owner of the unit in which you stayed… Our Owners take great pride in their Vacation homes and want to ensure that our guests have a wonderful experience and return for future visits." The quote is taken from the comments made by manager Kathy W, responding to a review by brtl2015 on Trip Advisor August 18, 2015.
This may help to explain why it took just short of a month for a reply to my original letter. The response from Madrona Resort is included in order to present their point of view.

Dear Tony Pisto and Kathy W,
RE: September 11, 2015 - Suite 18A Madrona Beach Resort
In anticipation of a quiet few days away, my wife and I booked into Madrona Beach Resort for the period of September 9-12, 2015. As we had entirely enjoyed our previous visit to the resort, we looked forward to once again spending time in Parksville. The larger aspect of the trip was our intention to enjoy the peace offered at the resort. On the afternoon of the 11th, with a lovely view outside our suite beckoning and two conveniently placed Adirondack chairs, all that was required for a perfect afternoon was a beverage and book. And pleasant it was - sunshine, and a fresh breeze off the water…perfect.
All remained serene until the late afternoon (4:30 PM onwards). Despite the fact that we, and the guests on either side of us, were obviously enjoying being outdoors on a perfect late summer afternoon, it was somehow decided this would now be the opportune time to take on lawn maintenance. Armed with a push mower, and a far more impressive garden tractor, the crew made their way across the back of the resort.
With the gardeners arriving at our section of grass, the couple next to us stood up to move indoors, where upon I asked “Seriously?” As the operator of the lawn tractor approached our suite I motioned that he should stop - earning me a round of applause from the four guests sitting on their patio at the suite next door.
I suggested to the gardener that he might find another time to conclude this exercise as there were obviously a number of guests currently enjoying the resort and that, secondly, and perhaps more importantly, given the rates to stay here, we collectively hadn’t planned on being forced indoors to watch while he cut the grass.
The gardener didn’t seem overly concerned by any of this, only offering that this was the only time the job might be accomplished. I stated that perhaps during the morning hours, early in the week would make more sense, rather than late on a Friday afternoon when guests are settling into their weekend.
I was then advised this was his only opportunity to perform the cutting, and that he had already worked a full day. How he occupies his time outside of his contract with Madrona Beach Resort isn’t of any relevance. Paying guests do not care.
As reasonable wasn’t to be on the agenda, I telephoned the resort office to seek a resolution to the impasse that had now developed. An apology, an explanation that this is when such things are scheduled, and the suggestion I write to you, was the only remedy on immediate offer. I would have anticipated that a premier resort of Madrona’s calibre would have a Manager available to meet the concerns of guests. While the young woman was pleasant, her offer to provide your address in order that I might write a letter isn’t in the best traditions of the hospitality industry. This was a missed opportunity to take an unfortunate situation and attempt to sort it to my satisfaction. Instead, I’ve simply had further cause for frustration. I believe we’d be hard pressed to find a top hotel anywhere else that operates on this basis.
Marketing research stipulates that a satisfied customer will tell 2-3 people about their experience with your company. A dissatisfied consumer will share their lament with 8-10 people and some will push that number to twenty. It is now likely that the eight people driven indoors will possibly mention this episode to 80 potential clients, and possibly as many as 160. And this is before anyone decides to visit social media or internet travel sites. Conversely, I wonder how many complaints you would expect as a result of the grass being left an inch or two longer than normal (when the majority of your guests will have seen nothing but brown, dry lawns all summer)? Shall we say none?
I appreciate that maintenance has to be accomplished. That stated, Friday afternoon is the start of the weekend. Surely common sense would suggest that lawn cutting be accomplished early in the week? The counter-argument will be that there will be those who will complain on a Monday morning, or a Tuesday afternoon. I would suggest that it’s easier to make a case for such things during the week, accepting the resort enjoys a strong occupancy rate. Would it then not make sense to perform maintenance in the hours between the stated check-in and check-out times? This would cleverly result in there being fewer guests on the property to be inconvenienced.
The larger question has to be, who in the service industry remotely believes it to be a good idea to inconvenience guests when they are obviously comfortable? Would you not celebrate the gardening team reporting they’ll have to return to finish their job, as guests were clearly enjoying the aspects of the resort that make it worth visiting?
None of us would countenance restaurant staff removing the linen and vacuuming the carpet while a meal was still being enjoyed, and yet no one at Madrona Beach Resort saw the larger picture. What an extraordinary way to show guests your appreciation of their custom.
This was our second visit to Madrona this year. You must realize this is in your favour?
Of the plethora of options available, we were impressed enough to specifically seek another holiday at your resort. Had this unfortunate and regrettable intrusion not occurred, I would be thinking ahead to the next opportunity to visit. Whether or not this is an eventuality is entirely based on how this conversation concludes.
I look forward to your reply. In the interest of fairness, I’ll refrain from comment outside of this correspondence until you’ve had a reasonable opportunity to rectify this disappointing turn of events to our mutual satisfaction.
Yours truly,
The reply from Madrona Beach Resort

Dear…
Thank you for your letter dated September 15, 2015, regarding your recent stay at Madrona Beach Resort. Your comments were discussed at our recent strata meeting.
We as a council will take your comments into advice regards the days and timings of this necessary work. While your logic may hold true for the spring and fall shoulder seasons it does not really fit into our busy season, which goes from mid-May until after Thanksgiving, where every day is the same weekend or not. There isn’t a time of day where no one is impacted. And depending on conditions, grounds maintenance can be undertaken on other days as well.
We take great pride in the beauty of our grounds and this is due to our excellent landscaping crew and the routine maintenance they provide.
The reality is that there is never a good time for this essential work to be done and we regret that on this occasion you were inconvenienced.
Signed, Tony Pisto, Strata Council President and Kathy Weber, Resort Manager.
Conclusion: The reply from Madrona Beach Resort eloquently states where their priorities are in relation to their perception of the delivery of hospitality.
My comments about expected levels of service being entirely ignored. I have however, been once again reminded of the importance of keeping their lawns manicured.
I would suggest that those considering staying here help Madrona Beach Resort reach their goal of perfect lawns by making alternate arrangements, allowing them to tend to their precious grass without interruption from pesky and annoying guests.
I’ll end on a positive note- one should always try and be helpful. If Kathy Weber is at all interested, I am available on a consultant basis to help with guest relations. It is clearly apparent that at this juncture no one in management enjoys the necessary experience. But they do have nice lawns…..

We have been coming to Parksville for 20 years on an annual family summer vacation. The first 15 years we stayed at Ocean Trails and the last five we have come to Madrona. Ocean Trails is newer and overall the suites and property are in better condition than Madrona. Ocean Trails has a wading pool and whirlpool as well. The advantage that Madrona has are the two bedroom units right on the beach. You will pay for this convenience (close to $3,000 - taxes in for the week) but if you have small kids it may be worth it to you to avoid packing all your beach gear up and down the steep walkway that runs from the upper levels of the Madrona and Ocean Trails units. Keep in mind that there are often loud parties on the beach and you will need to keep your windows open on hot nights. Last night three little kids were screaming as they ran in the water at 1:00 AM. Last year there was a drunken wedding after-party that finally wrapped up at 5:00 AM. The particular unit we had is looking sort of tired and could use an upgrade, but some of the other units were in better shape. It really depends on the owner of each individual unit. As for units not on the beach the prices are similar but I'd be inclined to go back to Ocean Trails as the rooms are newer, bigger and the amenities are better. There is little room to move around in either of the two bedrooms at Madrona. The staff at Madrona are excellent but keep in mind the office hours are 9 to 8.

We had the unfortunate experience of staying at the Madrona Beach Resort. It wasn't a restful spot due, in part, to the fact that on the first floor unit it sounded like thundering elephants were staying upstairs and that made it difficult to get any rest. The staff also wanted to charge for a bag of ground coffee (after the first one, on the first day) and when i complained was told "this is a resort, not a hotel." Our friends stayed in an upstairs unit and it was dreary with worn furniture and an uncomfortable bed. The staff was also very unaccomodating. The set-up is for families with young children and bikes and is more like camping in a building. Although there was a fireplace the room didn't even come with one stick of wood: that had to be purchased at the office. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

On our way back from visiting Tofino we missed our ferry and decided we'd stay in Parksville for the day/night. My older sister mentioned something about Madrona Beach Resort so we thought we'd check it out.
Upon arrival we were allowed to check out two suites they had, ground level suite or a 1 bedroom upper level one. After checking both out we decided on the ground level one as it had more room for the two pack-n-plays we use for our little ones (3.5yrs and 16 months).
There complex is like a converted townhouse complex, which is a pretty neat idea. All rooms look over water. The ground suites have a sliding door into the back common area that each have a 4-chair and table with own propane bbq.
Inside the suite you have a queen bed, sofa bed, full kitchen with dinning area and a full bathroom (roomy shower stall, no tub). There is also a fireplace that allows the use of presto-type firelogs.
Outside amenities were a tennis court, two children playgrounds, beach access etc.
The only downside was that because the rooms are east facing, the sunrise lights up the suite quite well in the morning. Early too like at 6am. It would be nice to have darkening curtains but that would be my only complaint.
We would easily come back again and spend multiple nights there.
