The first room was very stinky, walked into the room and the first thing I see is saw-dust all over the floor, ( apparently they changed locks that day) I took a look around, and noticed the bed blankets didn't look made, the bathroom had mold around the tub, toilet and floor, but what caught my attention was the silverfish trying to scurry behind the mirror......so disgusting.
I had to wonder when I looked into the corner of the room and saw a huge spider, that had apparently been there for awhile if it got so BIG by eating all the bugs it caught.
I went to change rooms, The lady behind the desk has a personality of a board, not friendly and didn't seem to care (said sorry, had excuses for everything) My next room was better, still moldy smelling but better. Moldy sealant around the tub, toilet, and the floor. spider hanging out below the air- conditioner unit but wasn't able to eat me in the night so I left it alone. no coffee pots (instant coffee) one bed had hair in it.....the other was acceptable.... The poor dog who needed to sleep on the floor even looked distressed. As I'm typing this review indicates I made it out in the morning alive, the dog is ok too.....This was a late night get a hotel fast type of adventure, next time I will read trip advisor reviews first.........0 out of 5..

Exhausted from a long drive, I stopped in Merrit for the night. All the hotels were full, but this motel had a room available. I should have kept driving. It wasn't so much the dated, shabby mid 60's decor that bothered me, but the smell was terrible. A combination of old cigarette smoke and cheap air freshener permeated everything. The smoke alarm was disconnected and hanging by a wire and the door had a cheap interior lock and no deadbolt. Mold and dirt everywhere, and the blankets were decorated with cigarette burns. The paper thin walls allowed us to enjoy the conversation held at a normal volume, from the three guys next door, that continued until 4:30 in the morning, ensuring that we had no sleep. Thankfully we had sleeping bags and pillows with us, so were assured of a clean bed to sleep in, even if my bed did have a 20 degree tilt to the right, resulting in my spending the night pushing myself back toward the other side of the bed. We would have been better off sleeping in the car.

We had this hotel booked ahead of time but when we got there we decided not to stay there. it's all the worst of motels you can imagine. Dirty, poorly maintained, low class and transients. There were clearly disturbed people walking around the property speaking to themselves, we didn't feel safe and the staff weren't even around to ask any questions of. So if they don't care, we don't care. We moved on to a different hotel.

Glad I didn't.....Got into Merritt This past Saturday afternoon for a weekend of racing. Booked on their website because of the price as Merritt is only 2 hours from home- anything more expensive, I would just drive home after the races and return the next morning. I did not receive an e-mail confirmation but I figured I would try anyhow. I got to the office around 11:30 am, no booking but I was given a room at the advertised price and was told it was available right away. I said I would come back in the evening and settle in...paid for the room and was given the key. Upon returning from the days activities and dinner afterwards I went to my room. To my surprise, the key turned the lock but the door was locked from the inside and someone inside said the room was taken.
I went to the office and after being buzzed in , 10pm, I was told by the same lady that rented me the room that she stepped out for a while and the person watching the desk gave my room to someone else. I am glad I did not leave my belongings in the room. I was told that they had no more rooms and then was looked at with a blank stare.
I asked for my money and after a couple minutes of searching, it was returned. I have never been in this situation and hope it never happens again. After driving around town only to find all of the hotels were booked it was now 11:30pm...too late to drive home so I slept in my truck...poorly...it was below zero when I got up at 6am....

I will tell anyone who will listen-do not patronize this place! I never saw the rooms so I can't comment on that but the owners (self run) have no idea what they are doing when it comes to being in the service industry. Shame on you!!!

Our price was higher than the advertised price. We asked for a kitchenette and were given a hotplate with one pot. No dishes, no silverware, nothing else. The power cable for the hotplate has to run through the sink to plug in.

The televsion is tiny and has a horrible shaky picture.

The cleaning girl was very friendly, but the owner's wife was extremely rude. It was as though we were inconveniencing her telephone call by asking if we could use the laundromat (which is incredibly dirty).

The place has a run down feel and is not very clean. It is on a main road right next to a hospital emergency so it is not very quiet either.

I would never stay here again. Awful Awful Awful.

Extremely dirty rooms, toilet was plugged upon check in and no manager on duty, rooms are circa 1960 and have never been updated. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone - there are 4 other new hotels on the same strip - please stay away from the Sportsman's.

NOTE - The only reason we stayed was because it was the only room left in town (under $175) as we were passing through town (during Merritt Mountain Music Fest)

I was riding my motorcycle along looking for a motel in Merritt, BC and saw the Sportsman that was advertising best rates and Internet.
I checked with at desk clerk about the availability of cable Internet and the room rate. I was told yes they had cable and wireless Internet and the room rate was $49 so I checked in without checking further.
After checking in I search for the Internet cable connection that I couldn't find so I went back to the desk clerk and ask where it is located.
I was then told they only had wireless Internet and I mentioned I had specifically asked for cable Internet and said that I wouldn't take the room as I needed Internet access.
When I asked for my credit card bill back I was told that there would be a $5 charge because it was advertised that wireless and it was supposedly my fault that I misunderstood even though I asked specifically about the availability of cable Internet.
In fact they were not totally honest about their sign as it said only "internet" from the direction I came, it did say "wireless internet" from the other direction. They also said there was a charge for reversing the credit card transaction which for some reason they processed at check-in as opposed at my check out.
In the end they charged me $5.35 for, what I consider their mistake.

Overall my experience, although short, was terrible. The customer service was essentially non-existence, the room was smelly, the windows wouldn't open, the air conditioner was extremely noisy, and they didn't have cable Internet that I specifically asked about, and they charged me $5.35 for their not being totally honest with me.

Not more than a 100 metres further down the road was motel for $20 more that had clean, fresh smelling rooms, windows that opened, cable and wireless Internet, and very helpful and friendly service.

The Sportsman Motel in Merritt BC is one I would NOT recommend to anyone.

Absolutely the most disgusting place ever!!!! Do not book here, the front counter staff are the rudest people I have ever met in my life, the room is dirty, smelly, falling apart, bugs, spiders, mold - and that is putting it mildly. We actually had to call the local RCMP to attend to get the woman at the front dest to stop verbally abusing us when we asked for a refund - we finally got a partial refund but had to pay a one-night penalty-we stayed but put our own blankets on the bed so as not to sleep on theirs - the one bed had a previous visitors hair stuck to the nasty sheets!!!!!

I was supposed to stay three nights but only stayed one and I wish I could take that one back. Hospitality was non-existent. Lady at the front desk was rude, in pijamas all day and either wearing slippers that revealed the ugliest toes and feet I've ever seen or went barefoot. No, really! She went walking around across the parking lot and went room to room in bare freakin' feet. In November? C'mon. Really! No, and I mean NO hot water. Bed was so saggy I got up with a kinked spine. One packet of instant coffee for two people for tree nights.. Are little packets of instant coffee that expensive that they are rationed? I heard mice gnawing within the walls as I laid in bed. Notice I didn't say sleep. I was so upset at these people that if I didn't leave my credit card number I would have smashed some walls, torn a mattress(not that it would make a difference) or pissed on the "carpet" or somewhere in the room just to get them back from bulls@*#ing us. Room was advertised at $49 but I was billed at $65. To make things simple, Run, run, run away as fast as you can...ps. Her brand new Cadillac in front of the motel office is paid for by the $ she scams from you and I. Go elsewhere and let's keep her in bare feet for real!

Even tho they say 'unbeatable price $49.00' they don't tell you it is for a single occupant. Having no other choice but to stay in a hotel that night we opted to stay there. The room wasn't the greatest. We asked if they had kitchenettes and she kinda just say 'hmmm sort of' even though it is advertised as having them??? There was a small fridge, microwave a couple of mugs/glasses, 3 pgks of instant coffee, whitener and sugar, 2 pieces of kleenex in the kleenex box. Being NOVEMBER it was a bit chilly. The room was ICE cold. Being so cheap as they are, they had one piddley electric baseboard heater that took 4 hours to make it 'comfortable'. The hot water took 3 hours to heat up. The front desk person was not very friendly and for paying over 60 bucks a night one would hope to get at least a decent room/service. It is an old place. But old doesn't mean it has to be cold, stinky, run down and the customer treated like dirt. We were going to stay an extra night but would rather sleep in a tent in minus 15 then stay there. We went for a quick drive and found the Double D Inn. They are under new management and doing more renos etc. That too is old, but it is CLEAN, FRIENDLY, and for the around the same rate got a kitchenette with a JAR of instant coffee, JAR of whitener, TEA BAGS, coffee machine, toaster, (stove/oven,fridge). The suite even had an extra room with a Qbed. And there is a river that runs through the back of the lot - very nice! I would stay at the Double D again, but NEVER at the Sportsman in Merritt!
