It appears Painters and April Point have been purchased by a company in Vancouver who has really done nothing to improve these properties. An absolute gem of locations, however, food has never been outstanding. Stay at Painters, but eat at Dolphins resort, a 10 min. walk down the road. Contacting this place is nearly impossible. They literally DO NOT answer their phones. Seriously, you have multi million dollar properties and can't pay wages high enough for someone to take calls off season?

Our reservation got cancelled last minute due to power issues, no real explanation about what had happened to cause the problem. The guest manager left a message with her private cell to inform me as phone lines also down. Very strange overall. She was nice enough but it was clear things were in some kind of disarray. Just not sure it’s a good idea to book here until they have their ducks in a row. Normally a nice place to stay but I wouldn’t book as it is, I’m wondering if this might be a financial issue rather than technical.

Our team was scheduled to stay at painters lodge during a tournament in Comox. Some families on our team went up on a Thursday night and the rest of the families were going up on Friday. Friday afternoon the team starts to get called that the reservations are cancelled as the hotel has no power. I am fully aware that thing happen that are out of their control, I understand that without power we were not able to stay there. My problem is the way they handled the situation. We had a block of 18 rooms. When they called they advised your reservation was cancelled and good luck to you. One mom was told to sleep in her van. These are families travelling with children. How about securing another hotel in the area for the team or at least providing phone numbers. The families that stayed on Thursday night had to go back and retrieve their belongings. They were offered no assistance and were not even given a flashlight to help them. This was an accident waiting to happen. Luckily everyone was able to get their belongings without incident. Finally, we are 5 days past the cancellations and have not heard from them. Refunds have not been processed even though we were advised they would be. I would not recommend this lodge to anyone!

We arrived at the resort an hour before check-in, hoping to be able to check-in early. This was not allowed, which I can’t complain about as we were early. What did bother me about it was the fact that the woman on the desk (whom we had to wait about five minutes for before anyone even came to the desk) didn’t even make an effort to check or confirm if our room was ready - it was just an automatic no. Once we did check in, the room did not smell good and was just old and tired looking. In the shower the next morning, I noticed a large clump of hair on the wall of the shower. Disgusting. I took a picture and showed it at the front desk. The only response was an apology and a comment that she would tell housekeeping. Breakfast was grim…..my husband had a hard boiled egg that was so over cooked the yolk was black. Other foods were completely gone. Although this resort is in a beautiful location and could be lovely, it is tired, rundown and the service, quite frankly, was far below par. Friends who live locally were surprised it was still open when we were there in early November, as it apparently is usually closed for the season by then. Perhaps it should have been as it was not worth the visit and felt like a deserted, sad place. The saying “you get what you pay for” comes to mind as the rooms were quite cheap - I am just happy I didn’t pay more for this experience!

We arrived Sept 19th, we expected that all services would be available at Painter’s Lodge as it had been highly recommended as the best place to stay in Campbell River if you want to fish. Only rooms and the pub restaurant was open when we arrived. Everything else had been closed, including their April Point site and activity centre. When I booked or subsequent communications from the resort never indicated that services would be very limited during our stay. Also, realized a few hours after checking out that I had left two pieces of clothing in a dresser drawer. Immediately called and told exactly where the clothing was so we could return to pick them up. They couldn’t confirm with housekeeping at that time and never returned my call as promised. We called back twice and were finally told that housekeeping didn’t find anything. When we offered to come back as only 1 hour away, we then told the room was occupied, even though the resort was very quiet when we had been there the two previous evenings. We won’t be back to Painter’s and would not recommend given our experience. Also value for money was poor as rooms are quite dated and fairly basic for the prices charged
