I stayed here in December of 2018, and again just last week (Jan 2020), and I am still pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It is beautifully appointed, it feels quite luxurious, but the prices are reasonable. This time I had a room with a patio door and I could park directly outside. It was very convenient! I also booked online and got a free breakfast where I could pick an item off the breakfast menu, not just a "continental breakfast". I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon, it was DELICIOUS.

We just stayed at The hotel and spa Universel de riviere du loup. First, the front desk service was above and beyond when there was a mix up wit my spa reservation. Emilie was patient, did not role an eye!(as i also work in a hotel Environment, and know so many guests try to pull some maneuvers!) she fully listened before assuming, smiled turned around and within seconds everything was fixed and then some!!
Truly professional. We booked in the club privilege section, the room was newly renovated and great. Espresso machine was KEY for a coffee addict as myself! We also enjoyed 2hrs each evening(6pm-8pm) in the spa which was just perfect. **resto closes at 9pm including alll restos in town - one or 2 bars but the kitchens still close at 10pm at those 2 places so make sure you plan ahead. The first night we took our time after spa and almost had to eat McDonald's in a place with amazing organic, raised down the road or fished across the street food, which would be a major shame! The hotel resto breakfast and food in gen. was TOP notch!!! Best breakfast, Benedict eggs cooked to perfection they where still runny after 20mins!!! And the smoked salmon ,and creton, forget about it!!!! Honestly THE best priced hotel for service, food, rooms and location.
( also covid rules STRICTLY respected by Hotel and especially all guests it was great!)

This hotel was beautiful. The rooms were very good. My Husband loved the heated snowmobile storage. The hotel failed exceptionally with our dinner delivery as we ordered it at 6:30 PM cancelled it at 8:30 PM but it was actually delivered at 11:30 PM. When the Unexpected knock came on the door, I jumped out of bed and when I opened the Door the server looked at me like I had 10 heads because he didn’t understand why I didn’t want my dinner at 11:30 at night. It was Valentines weekend so I understand it was very busy and there was no hard feelings but I was appalled that there was Not even an apology about the 5 hour dinner delivery! Crackers is what we had for dinner. If they were that busy they should have told us when we called the dining room or walked down to pick up the menu at 630pm.

We asked for a quiet room away from the elevators- they placed us across from the elevators. We asked for a top floor- they put us on the bottom floor with people pounding back and forth above us and children running. We asked for the Murphy bed to be made up for our son as we had a late arrival. Nothing. The floors are laminate and you can hear the people above and next door perfectly. The parking is right outside the windows and the motorcycles are loud!
To top it off there is blood on the bathroom floor. Not nice. We’re still trying to get to sleep. When you’re paying this much money you expect more.

Not at all as advertised.

Room was nice. Pool was silly small and over sold on the website. It was dirty at the bottom, so I am guessing sporadic cleaning. Elevator looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in days. Overlooking a parking lot but that is going to happen.

If the spa side is the same management or cleaners, I would have a good look around before investing your hard earned post-pandemic money at this location. The one staff member I saw at the desk was professional and brief.

It is just a place to sleep. Too bad, I was looking to make some good memories for my kids but am now embarrassed I brought them here.

We stayed at the Hotel Universel in July 2021 and were extremely satisfied with our visit at that time. The hotel which is pet friendly has rooms accessible from the back of the room to the parking lot, which proved to be a great asset for us. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable for the 2 of us and our medium sized dog. We booked a room for the end of July2022 3 weeks prior to travelling and were advised that there were no rooms accessible to the parking lot available but we would be accommodated with a first floor room not far from an exit. We arrived at the hotel and the check in staffer was friendly and polite and after asking about the best place to park, he suggested a specific outside door which he said was close to our room. He did not mention that this door led to a stairwell which had open stairs where one had to first climb up a flight of stairs and then go down a second flight to get to the area where the room was located (not fun with a dog who was terrified of open steps). Upon opening the door to the hallway, the smell of chlorine was unmistakable and then when we opened the door to the room, the chlorine odour was overwhelming. The sliding doors to the room opened to the indoor pool , not what we expected or were advised when booking. We went back to the front desk to request a change and were told the only other room available (hotel was fully booked because of long weekend elsewhere in Canada) was a room used for emergencies, such as a mistaken overbooking. We were shown the room (on the second floor beside the elevator) and it did not have a window! Not a great feeling of security in case of a fire and certainly not up to code anywhere in the civilized world. We chose to leave despite being advised by the front desk staffer that there were no other rooms available anywhere in the vicinity (true). We were throughly disappointed and angered by what happened here and had we been given specific information about the room in advance would have chosen to stay elsewhere. We did our 5.5 hour drive to our next destination which we had planned to do the next day. We are sadder but wiser and would recommend to future guests to ask very specific questions about their rooms when booking.

Very beautiful hotel. The decor around the pool with multiple room balconies overlooking the pool was fantastic. I only caught a glimpse of the conference rooms but I could tell that everything was luxurious. I would highly recommend the hotel for any stay or for any conference. Absolutely loved it.
Having said that, contrary to advices from travel magazines, I would not recommend leaving any valuables at the front desk for safekeeping. Late June of this year, I forgot an item in my room and I called immediately in the following hour after checking out. They had found it and they had my item in their hands during my call. Since I was returning to the hotel in a few days, I asked them to please store it at the front desk for safekeeping. They told me that it wasn’t a problem. Upon my return five days after, they told that they couldn’t find it even though that they specifically remembered having it in their hands. Suffice to say that the hotel now considered my item has a “lost item” and that they were not responsible for any lost items.
I totally agreed with them on the definition of a “lost item”, but this was not a “lost item”, it was an item that was in their hands during my call. An item that I assumed would be safely stored at the front desk. After many emails, the hotel management did offer to cover half of the replacement cost even though that they maintained that they weren’t responsible. After I counter offered, I sadly never heard back from them.
It is a superb hotel, but don’t leave any valuables at the front desk.

Unusually Heavy travel traffic didn’t permit us to book the Levesque Hotel in Rivière-du-Loup so we took a chance on the Universel. It’s a large hotel crowded with kids and the scent of chlorine from the indoor pool permeates the lobby and beyond. Nonetheless we trooped up to our third floor room after 10 minutes driving around their parking lot looking for a space.
The room was ok but the bed was an unmitigated disaster. It actually looked like someone had slept in it before we checked in. Can’t give this hotel high marks based on the bed and bed linens alone I’m afraid.

We stayed one night in a 2-queen bedroom on our way to the Gaspe peninsula. The room was comfortable and clean, and it was good to have a microwave and a mini-fridge where we could put the food from our cooler.

The hotel had a pool with a water slide, which seemed like fun for families but we were just there to sleep. We had dinner elsewhere but had breakfast here which was convenient but not particularly memorable - there are many very good breakfast restaurants in the province of Quebec; the Universel’s isn’t one of them

There isn’t much in the area for a pleasant walk. It’s far from the St. Lawrence River and from the centre of town. But it’s a good overnight hotel

We have stayed at this hotel a few times because they have a variety of electric vehicle charging stations available on site, which is fantastic. The rooms are always clean and spacious and include recycling buckets (not all hotels do, unfortunately).
On this most recent visit we were unable to take a bath because the plug wouldn't stay put, and there was no working fan to clear the steam from the shower. The lack of any strong overhead lighting meant I had to move the coffee maker to another spot so I could see what I was doing (not everyone has a Nespresso machine at home so some instructions would have been helpful). Our dinner meal in the restaurant was very tasty but a bit on the pricey side for what we received. I would likely stay here again but I hope that more care will be taken to ensure that necessary upkeep and repairs are done in a timely fashion.
