My wife and I spent three nights at the Hovey Manor at the end of July. We had room number 44 at the south end of the establishment. The room is on the third floor, so expect to climb some stairs to get there. The balcony of this room has a good view of the lake, thanks to the hotel tennis court some distance away. The room has high ceilings, at least nine feet. It is decorated nicely and it has crown molding and wainscotting. The room was very clean; the bathroom was very clean as well. The bathroom has a large counter and added features, like a rain shower and a high-tech heater, squirting toilet seat.

The furnishings are more than adequate and did not look worn. There was a supplementary table in the room to allow guests to eat breakfast in their room because of the pandemic. The room has a gas fireplace that is run on a timer. The air-conditioner unit is quieter than average, but not quiet. The mattress was firmer than we like.

The hotel grounds are attractive and well kept. There are many colourful flowers on the grounds that attract bees and the occasional humming bird. There is a nice pool area; one can order drinks and snacks at the pool. The hotel also has a dock from which one can make use of a kayak, a pedal craft, a canoe or a paddle-board (life jackets are supplied and required).

Front desk staff were competent and pleasant.

The hotel has two restaurants. We ate at both restaurants more than once. The food was excellent in both restaurants . The wait for food, however, ranged from slow to very slow to glacial. The Hatley restaurant is definitely a gourmet restaurant.

When I learned that Hovey was reopening for overnight stays I got on the phone immediately and booked a three night stay in early June. I have been visiting here for over 15 years and cannot think of a better place for relaxation, excellent hospitality, fine dining and atmosphere. As usual, the staff was extremely helpful and the food excellent. I never worry about bad weather while staying there as the property is so peaceful and attractive during any rainstorm or snow event. Cannot wait for my next visit. Staying here makes me realize how fortunate and blessed I am. I wish more people could experience Hovey.

I stayed at the Manoir Hovey in March of this year. I liked it so much that I decided to start my vacation, at the beginning of July, with 3 days there. I was looking for peace and quiet and got it again, even though the hotel was almost full.

I booked a superior room. I had to stay in room 8 for the first night, with a partial lake view, and then was moved to room 22 for the other 2 nights. Room 8 is beautiful but the balcony is over a steam room so it is a bit more noisy. However, you don't hear any of the noise in the room. It is bigger than room 22 but this one has a balcony with a lake view. It is just superb! I had my dinners on the balcony overlooking the lake. I also read there in the mornings while enjoying the peace and quiet.

I was afraid that it would feel cramped since the hotel was almost full but it does not. There are people but you never feel crowded. I sat on the deck each day and sometimes was by myself and sometimes there were other people, but everyone was really respectful of the other's space. I swam in the lake a couple of times per day. Lake Massawippi is so beautiful! I just sat there, on the deck or on my balcony, to appreciate the scenery. The hotel grounds are so beautiful. Sitting in the english gardens is also very enjoyable. If you want peace and quiet, this is the hotel for you!

The staff goes out of his way to make you feel welcome. Everyone is courteous and professional.

I am already planning for a return visit, probably at the beginning of January where it will be all white and beautiful!

We stayed at the Hovey Manor this past summer. I wanted more space, so I rented their cottage directly from their website.
When we got there, it was clear that the cleaning hat been rushed. The kitchen floor was squeaking when we walked on it, their was opened food left behind and you could see the shadow of the dust in the arc the vacuums had done in the corner of the living room.
No super big deal, and when I mentioned it, the cleaning crew came back the next day and fixed it.
The cottage itself, Dragonwatch, is very nicely decorated and of good proportion. But keep in mind a few things that the description on the site didn't mention.
Firstly, the third bedroom is in the basement of the cottage. Since it's built on a steep hill, there is good natural light that comes in, but it's still in the basement.
The bathroom off the main bedrooms is tiny. Think cruise ship tiny.
The various decks are arranged so that you're going down many staircases before reaching the dinning table for instance. So we ended up dinning indoor instead. Furthermore, the cottage sits 25 feet away from the owner's house. It's not a very private set-up, to say the least. Having said this, he's a charming fellow.
And lastly, when we were leaving, my daughter admitted to me the following fact. In her bedroom, the one in the basement, a chair had been positioned to hide mold on the wall. She didn't want to raise a fuss and asked that I don't walk over to the front desk. But I did show it the the senior person on the cleaning crew waiting outside our door the day we left and asked her that someone call me about this. No one ever did.
On the positive side of things, the property his very beautiful, most of the staff was very friendly (see my review of the restaurant on site), the check-inn was easy and the lake was clear and cool.
But at +/- 1000$ a night, cleanliness is a given. Considering that it's a Relais & Chateaux only adds to this expectation.
In our experience, it didn't cut mustard.

Response from Stephen Stafford, Owner at Manoir Hovey

Thank you for your review. It seems that you enjoyed your vacation chez nous but were piqued about some of the details regarding the "Dragonwatch Cottage". Firstly, Dragonwatch is not part of Relais & Chatieaux or owned by Manoir HOvey. It is the guesthouse on my personal 5 acre lakeside property adjacent to, but invisible from, the hotel. Most of Dragonwatch guests are regulars who enjoy, especially with children, the spacious privacy plus having free access to all the faciilties of Hovey which is a short swim, a brief paddle or a 3 minute walk away. DRagonwatch guests also enjoy a discount on any meals they decide to enjoy at Hovey. Dragonwatch is fully equipped with a specious kitchen, 3 bedrooms , 2 bathrooms (yes, one of them is small), an entance garden. a large lakeside deck PLUS a private beach with free canoe, kayaks and paddleboards, a boathouse with sundeck and a large dock. I renovated this 1898 cottage 4 years ago but wanted to keep the feeling of a traditional North Hatley cottage but with all the mod cons. It is not intended to have the higher luxury evident in the bedrooms at the Manor but is very comfortable, none the less. I am sorry for the patch of stained wall paper near the floor in the downstairs bedroom. Incidentally, it is not a basement. The cottage is split level and there is a basement below it. You mentioned a price of about $C1000+ per day. The peak season rate is $C625. per day for up to 8 people, plus the necessary taxes.. I apologize if it was not clear to you that Dragonwatch is not owned by Manoir Hovey. Keep Well!

Welcoming cosy rustic inn nestled in the woods. Open fireplaces, gourmet food, polite helpful staff, exceptionally well appointed and decorated rooms with clean bathrooms; some of the rooms are a short walk from the main building (bring a torch). Only drawback is the high cost.

This was our first venture out for relaxation during the pandemic. We were not disappointed. The location food and rooms all combine to provide an experience that seems as if its another world. Tranquility while sitting on your private balcony, options to paddle board, read, kayak and more. Not to mention a nice walk into the village of North Hatley. The food and wine are amzing and portons are balanced healthy and beautifully presented. The manoir has a kitchen garden that they use and they also strive for local products in their menus. It was fun to run into the chef as we left for a walk. He was coming down the lane with his own marinaded vegetables and we stopped and chatted for a few minutes.

At the manoir everything is possible... Seriously just ask. A boxed lunch for your activities in the area no problem... like breakfast or dinner on your balcony.. certainly. Its seamless even check in and check out.

French and English are both spoken and service is excellent in both languages.

There were one or two minor lapses

Overall look and feel: A+

Fine dining restaurant: A Superb food with uber professional service in a drably beige room.

Casual restaurant: A A shining star. The Maitre d' could offer a master class in warmly welcoming guests to make them feel special. The menu could be better balanced.

Room: B- A superior room was the best available when we reserved, which seemed ok when I was assured on the telephone it had a king bed, fireplace and balcony. Our actual room at 110 square feet (plus a 35 sf bath and balcony with lake view) should be sold as a "single". It was very nicely appointed, but only "manageable" at best for two people. The negative here is size, not quality.

Public spaces: The only indoor public space is the library, which serves as the only lounge. Only once in 4 days, while waiting for dinner were we asked if we would like anything.

Service outside of the dining rooms: This is Hovey's weak suit. I'll present my case by telling the story of an afternoon. I asked the front desk attendant for my car keys since we were going out for the day (construction necessitates giving your car keys to the desk). She retrieved them and wordlessly slid the over the counter. At any other Relais and Chateaux, the request would have been verbally acknowledged and the keys handed to you with best wishes for a pleasant drive on a beatiful fall day. We drove over to Ripplecove because we had seen it online. While it is not MH's direct competition, we went onto their dock and sat down to take in the lake scenery on a sunny day. Within 5 minutes a staffer came out to ask us if we would like anything to eat or drink. When we said no, she asked if we would like her to stop back or did we want privacy. THAT is what should be happening at Hovey, but is not. When we returned to MH, we sat outside the library in lawn chairs to enjoy the late afternoon sun and stayed almost two hours. A hot drink would have been welcome as the sun set, but we never saw a staff member and were never given the opportunity to request anything. I could go on with ten other examples, but think I have made my point. R&C properties are typically on top of these details.

Manoir Hovey is the upmarket option in the area and staying here is not a mistake. Select your room carefully and do not expect a Relais and Chateaux experience when you go.

The title basically tells the tale!
My wife and I visited for 3 days in October to see the fall colours, and we were not disappointed. All of the staff were amazing and very polite, attentive and accommodating.
The room was just big enough, and had a perfect balcony facing the water to take in the views.
The food at Manior Hovey was absolutely delicious! Hats off to the chef, the portions were generous, and flavours out of this world. We are foodies and always search for hidden gems for great eats, and we would return to visit the restaurant in a heartbeat if we were in the area.
If you are looking for a nice quiet getaway on a beautiful property, this is it.
Especially in times like this with COVID, the Manor took extra precautions to ensure the safety of their guests. They were booked at half capacity and we never once felt like there was more than a few other couples beside us.
Bravo!

This experience was simply an other worldy relaxation and culinary journey. We haved stay before and were delighted to discover that it was even better than before.

From discrete protcols for safety a check in to a sense that if you lift a finger for a request it is immediately and professionally handled.

The restaurant "le hatley" is not to missed with the attention to detail and service handled well almost like a ballet in terms of how the team functions.

The sommelier is wonderful knowledgeable and engaging as were all the team. The food is balanced tasty and if one were to request salt or pepper it would be a sin as the flavours and portions are so well balanced not to mention delicious.

The pub "the tap room" is no less and wonderfully situated so you can eat outside even in October.

Our room for our stay was perfect with a balcony, chairs table and separate seating on a bench near the water. The weather and colours were amazing and we used the canoes kayaks and paddle boards.

Our experience is similar to others ... in that ensure you have a room that looks out onto or is by the water (as ours was). You will not be disappointed.

Manoir Hovey from arrival to departure, perfection. All Covid protocols were discretely enforced making us feel immediately comfortable,

We were warmly greeted, the valet took our car to be parked and recharged while the receptionist got us registered and in our room with amazing efficiency. Our deluxe room overlooking the lake was cozy and welcoming in traditional fabrics with contemporary touches. The balcony and fireplace were the icing on the cake.

The food in both the Pub and the Dining Room was exceptional. The menu in the Pub is less elaborate but the quality was equal to the main Dining Room. The service is perfect in both.

If the hotel and its services aren’t enough to make you wish you could stay longer, the beautiful scenery of Quebec’s Eastern Townships is. It is one of the most beautiful areas of the country.
