The Salt Shaker Deli and Inn, is one of Lunenburg's most beloved destinations for local residents and visitors alike. Award winning dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients from the Deli makes staying upstairs in the cozy four room Inn an easy choice. Newly renovated rooms with breathtaking views of the historic Lunenburg harbour. Please note that like most other accommodations in this Unesco town, we do not have a parking lot so the option is street parking or the town's waterfront lot. Also, we are located on the second floor and are currently unable to accommodate mobility issues.

There are not too many choices in winter in Lunenburg. Either the pub, a few family restaurants or Salt Shaker Deli. Don't get fooled by the name. It is not like a Montreal or Toronto deli, although you can get pizzas and sandwiches. They also have good dinner choices and their lunches are pretty good, too. My wife had the pear and brie pizza, which she enjoyed. I ordered the warm kale salad (with walnuts, veggies and cheese melted on top). The dressing gave it a delicate flavour and the kale was cooked but still had a crunch. I really loved the final flavour mix. I also had the minestrone soup and although I could not place the flavour that was different, it was not what I expected and I did not really enjoy it too much. The meal with a glass of wine for one of us and a soft drink for the other was about $60 with tip and taxes. Not bad these days where it is easy to spend over $100 and not be happy!

This was my first time in Lunenburg but definitely not my last. The Salt Shaker Deli is a great little place to enjoy fresh seafood with a view of the harbour. The service was prompt , the staff incredibly friendly and the restaurant and bathrooms extremely clean. We sat on the back deck, where we could soak up some of the only rays of sunshine during our visit.

This place is on the Chowder Trail so if you are looking for a stamp in your passport, please stop here. You will not be disappointed. This was, by far, some of the best seafood chowder I've eaten. Ever. Full Stop. They should win an award. Durty Nelly's touts their chowder as "award winning" but clearly, the judges did not have a bowl of Salt Shaker's soup that day. Please visit this gem in the heart of Lunenburg.

We came here on a recommendation from locals. Very clean establishment and hospitable staff. We had the pan fried haddock and seafood pizza. The haddock was great but the flavour profile of the seafood pizza wasn’t to my tasting. I’ll have to order something different next time. All in all, a pleasant lunch with fresh food and kind service. Very nice experience!

Sunday evening, waited 1,5 hr for a table for 2 so had great expectations. Unfortunately, it took 40 min to get 2 main courses and on paper the scallops linguini and seafood stew sounded great but both were under seasoned and the flavors were just not there. Mine had bitter roasted garlic. Big disappointment. We could tell the table next to us weren't excited with their pizzas either.

Amazing service. The attention to detail is superb. As 2 former servers it is difficult to wow us, this FOH staff wow’d us, didn’t hurt that the food was great too. The town of Lunenburg seems to have a lot of tourist traps… this isn’t one of them.

Check in was easy at the deli below the rooms. A flight of stairs up to the room but not particularly difficult. The room was beautifully decorated with a small but more than adequate bathroom with a good shower. The view from the room across the harbour was amazing. The bed was very comfortable and we both enjoyed a good sleep. Relatively little storage for clothes, but as we were there only for one night, that was not a problem. I would definitely stay again if in Lunenburg.

Lunch out on the deck on a beautiful August afternoon. Most tables have shade; some don't. Also indoor seating. Very busy (Folk Harbour Festival) and a bit slow service. Excellent fish cakes & chowder. Other food - salad, loster roll. - OK.

Room 2, The Spinnaker Suite

I can't remember when I've encountered such a deceptive misrepresentation between a properties online description and the actual product experienced. The owners use "boutique" to suggest charm and thoughtful design, they claim this is a luxurious suite with a great bed and furnishings, and guests will enjoy a whirlpool ensuite with a modern flat screen TV.

Here is the reality: You enter on the first level to a kitchenette/sofa area that is reminiscent of that inexpensive rental you had when you first moved out of your parent's house. The old hand- me-down kitchen table you put a coat of paint on to freshen up, the clean, but dated, IKEA couch someone gave you, the kitchen faucet that leaked all over the counter when you tried to turn it to the hot setting, the plastic bamboo shade you bought from Canadian tire to cover the window - does any of that feel "boutique" to you? It didn't feel that way to us either.

What about the upstairs bedroom with the fantastic view of the harbour? Again, think of where you were at when you lived in your first rental - sure, I'll take Grandma's lumpy, saggy, chairs that have been in her den for 20 years. Oh, that 15" flatscreen box style Sony TV from 1985, yah, I'll take that to fill up some space. The 'great' king size bed is old, extremely soft, lumpy, and is covered with a bedspread/duvet style of bedding that I highly doubt is changed between guests (probably just the top and bottom sheets). We couldn't bring ourselves to use it. You can stand next to the chairs to look out the small window facing the harbour - yes, it is a nice view, but sitting in those Grandma chairs crammed into a nook was very unappealing.

Bathroom: do you enjoy using communal shampoo and conditioner? Do you like to have 6 Q-tips loosely laid out on the edge of the sink (next to the mouldy plug) with a sign on the mirror saying, "use these to take off your make-up?" I don't. The last time you stayed in a boutique hotel did they have a plastic shower enclosure that was also produced some time in the early eighties? The whirlpool tub looked like a massive behemoth from the first generation of hot tubs in the 70's. Unless you are a gymnast, good luck even getting in or out of this thing. Peeling paint around the tub and the sunlight roof window were unpleasant.

The bedroom closet was filled with window screens and two large air conditioners - no room to hang your coat, let alone a few shirts. We couldn't pin down what type of oder permeated the room..was it cleaning products or just general mustiness?

Yes, the space is very clean and tidy and it is well cared for...but does it match the description on the website? NO. These owners get an A+ for marketing and a D- for delivery on their promises. They are deluding themselves if they think any part of this experience suggests boutique-style luxury.

Finally, you should know that this is essentially an unhosted B&B - you check-in at the adjacent restaurant and are given the key to your room. No one will help you in any way after that - if you cannot carry your bags up the long flight of steep stairs you are out of luck. There is no one in the building after the restaurant closes at 8:00 and I have no idea what you would do if you needed any help or there was a problem in your room during the night. I did not see any contact information in the room and it was not offered at check-in. Street parking (make sure you check the meter) is your only option.

We are truly baffled by the many effusively positive reviews promoting this Inn.

Had the owners represented this property as it really is (a quirky, old fashioned and eclectic space in a historic building, with the convenience of a fridge and microwave in a very good location), I could have respected that. Instead they decided to over promise and under deliver. Very poor practice and very disrespectful to their guests.

We fell in love with Lunenburg the moment we saw it. The inn is above a restaurant by the same name. We had a large room which had two floors. The room was large and bright and nicely decorated. They don’t have on site parking, like most of the places in town but there is free overnight parking on the streets. There’s also pay parking in town during the day. The only negative thing is that although there’s wifi it doesn’t work well at all. Since we had to do some work in the evenings that was the only downfall. There are so many great things to do in this little town and the inn is in a perfect location to do it all.

I had dinner at Salt Shaker on a very busy night. They could only fit me in at the bar which was fine. The staff were friendly & efficient. I enjoyed my Paloma cocktail & I had the salmon for my main. It was ok - not the best I’d had but not the worst either. The side vegetables were nice.
