This was our second visit to the Civic Hotel and it did not disappoint. Many of the staff are still there today and take pride in their work and their friendly smiles show their dedication from check-in to check-out. In summary, the location, room quality, and the food keeps us returning to this place. It’s a vibrant blend of contemporary style and informal elegance. A truly magnificent family friendly property situated close to shopping, sports rinks, and the US border. The Civic Hotel uniquely combines contemporary style, informal elegance, lively atmosphere and a superb range of facilities suitable for all ages, including a great breakfast buffet at the Dominion setting new standards for on-site restaurants in the Vancouver area. We liked the fact that we could get custom a la carte upgrades (i.e. poached eggs) or stick with the continental. Also, each stay for titanium members includes a 10% discount for dinner meals. The downside was the cost and underground location of the parking lot. It’s 3 stories below, dark, and difficult to transport luggage up to the room. It’s something the hotel needs to work out so the property is more welcoming and friendly to travelers with families. We loved the Civic logo and socks. Keep up the great work in Western Canada Autograph Collection & Marriott Hotel Group.

We booked a king bed corner room for a 1 night stay. The room we were first given was right above the Skytrain tracks, and was quite noisy, even for being on the 14th floor. We requested a move to the other side of the hotel, and the concierge was quite helpful in getting us to the 18th floor on the opposite side of the building. You could still hear the trains from there, albeit a little quieter. Both sides have good views of the city, but look down onto the problem area of Whalley. The location is right in the middle of one of the more downtrodden areas of Surrey, right above the Surrey Central Skytrain station and bus loop with lots of either homeless people or drug addicts hanging around. Although this is hardly the fault of the hotel. The rooms were an average size, not overly big. It did have a large shower and washroom, with the toilet by itself in a separate room. One thing I found missing was a mini fridge. Seems like most hotels and motels have one, but this one didn't. While the rooms were modern, clean, and the beds comfortable, I don't think I'd return unless the prices were a bit lower.

Dear CanucksKickAzz We want to thank for choosing Civic Hotel during your recent stay. I’m disappointed to hear that your stay fell short from your expectations on the Civic King Corner Rooms. Unfortunately, there are only 2 options per floor, one side that faces east and the other on the west. Additionally, while our hotel do not have mini fridges placed in the room; we do have fridges that can be delivered to guest room based on request and availability. We have ensured to leave profile notes in regards to your preferences. We hope that you will give Civic Hotel another chance in the near future where we can meet your expectations. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at frontofficeleaders@civichotel.ca if you are looking to book a future reservation. We would be happy to look after your experience from beginning to end and create an experience exactly like nothing else. Sincerely, Jonie T Director of Rooms

I have stayed at this hotel twice; the first visit was only one evening. On my most recent trip, I was there for five nights. The hotel is newer, with a bright and well-furnished lobby, that bustles at all hours of the day and night.

The location is convenient to the Sky Train and a grocery store. The latter comes in handy, as there is no market place inside the hotel to purchase snacks or forgotten toiletries. The hotel features an onsite restaurant and a coffee bar that also serves a variety of light meals and bakery items.

I enjoyed the view from my guest room and the Illy coffee maker in my room. I also found the hotel personnel to be friendly and helpful. The hallways, common area, and my guest room were clean.

The low points included the pillows that all smelled like dirty hair, and that the room door didn't swing closed when I entered or exited the room. Unless I made a conscious effort to pull the door closed it remained propped open. Luckily, I was at the very end of the hallway, so it is doubtful anyone but the guest directly across from me noticed on the several occasions that I left or relaxed in the room without making sure it was latched.

The layout of the room was claustrophobia-inducing. It is packed with furniture. There is no luggage rack provided, which made unpacking and packing difficult. There was no outlet accessible to the workstation. I will be returning frequently, for 12-day stays, and I am hoping that I will get used to these things.

Don’t ever make the mistake of staying here for business.
1) Small rooms, obnoxious service.
2) We were chasing the Sales Manager for 2 days to meet us with regard to an event booked in their hall. We finally got to meet her on the day of the event. One would expect the hotel to reach out to you after check in when there is an event. In this case, we were chasing the Banquet person and were being given busy schedules etc. Too busy to meet guests who have booked an event!
3) The bedsheets are low thread count and toiletries are substandard. We have better ones at home.
4) The restaurant closed for “deep cleaning” an hour before scheduled closure. They close an hour prior to published hours instead of cleaning after closing hours - despite guests in the hotel. Unbelievable!!

Dear 25sonnyg, "Outstanding service!", "Helpful staff", "Enjoyable stay!" are typically what we are accustomed to hear from our hotel guests and event attendees. I am disappointed to learn that your expectations were not met this time. We take your feedback to heart and want to ensure the concerns you raised are brought forward to our hotel leaders. We are not aware of any recent early restaurant closure, and would like to know when this took place so we can follow up with Dominion Bar + Kitchen management team. In order to attempt in resolving these matters, may you kindly please reach out to me at Jonie.Tee@CivicHotel.ca with the name of the event? Rest assured that we will take necessary action as our team at Civic Hotel always strive to provide memorable experiences. I look forward to hearing from you.

The civic is a stunning hotel, with clean, modern rooms, and a gorgeous rooftop pool. The staff were insanely friendly and Banan and Andra as well as Jonie made me feel very welcome indeed. I do wish they had the freedom to remove their blazers in a heatwave though, seemed a bit rough of the Marriot group to enforce this. The beds were comfortable as heck and the rooms were silent even if neighbours made noise.

I liked staying at the hotel so much I extended twice. Could not recommend it enough.

I will say it feels light on other amenities, and the downstairs bar is overpriced and very busy, but what's new in a hotel eatery?

The other thing to consider is that while the courtyard area is nice, Surrey Central isn't a neighbourhood that feels super compatible with an upmarket marriot. It is perfectly accessible to Burnaby, New West and Vancouver on the sky train, but keep in mind the area is known for being a little sketchy, though generally very safe.

Still, that wouldn't stop me staying here twice, I'd recommend it for those on business who don't love staying downtown vancouver.

In stayed two nights at the Civic Autograph Collection in Surrey in July.

First impressions of the hotel are that it was big, clean and open. Lots of natural light in the common areas, with a good vibe. It was a bit tucked away and I found it a little hard to find the lobby / driveway, but check in was a breeze. The hotel is right next to a transit sky train station, with easy access to other parts of Vancouver

I was put in a high room floor with a decent view of the library. The room was clean, bright and modern. Be warned it’s not very large. It has an open concept type layout, with the bed looking out towards the window, the sink behind a separating wall, and then the seperate toilet and shower rooms. If you’re solo or with a spouse it’s okay, may not be with small kids or others.

The gym was very nice, large and open with great equipment. I didn’t take advantage of the outdoor pool this time.

I had drinks and food in the main restaurant, as well as the titanium breakfast. The breakfast was among the best hotel breakfasts I’ve ever had. Service was top notch as well, when the server messed up my dinner order, he fixed it immediately and comped me a drink.

I will definitely return when I’m in Surrey.

Pros - close to transit, open and bright, good food
Cons - area is less desirable, small rooms.

This is an newer hotel right in the heart of central Surrey. It’s right across the street to the Skytrain and is super convenient if you’re looking for for a budget friendly hotel that makes the rest of Vancouver very accessible through public transit. At first glance the surrounding outside area looks a little ‘rough’, but myself and my family had no issues the week we were there.

The room itself was on the 20th floor. It was large enough, very clean, and comfortable (including the beds). We couldn’t figure out the climate control and felt a little warm during the night. The bathroom was again very comfortable, clean and had a great soaking tub.

The door to the bathroom is translucent and the window into the bathroom does not blackout, so the summer mornings it gets very bright in the room - bring your eye masks!

They offered a breakfast buffet in the mornings that was adequate and completely self-serve.

I would definitely stay here again if the price is right.

As a frequent business traveler, room design makes a difference and I am so rarely impressed. My room at this hotel wasn’t that big but the function of every inch was thoughtful, the design was so contemporary and the value to price is solid.

First off, THE best in-room coffee: Illy espresso, just made my stay so much more enjoyable. Complimentary water, a nice touch too.

The lobby has a fantastic coffee bar (good for meetings) and the restaurant in the hotel is good too.

Tim Hortons across the street, pharmacy and several cheap fast eats if you need them. Literally across the street from the sky train.

Staff were friendly and delightful.

My only complaint is that the pool is an outdoor heated pool that is closed for the winter, why have an outdoor pool then? It looks so great, will try to come back because of how great a stay I had.

Front desk was very pleasant. The hotel is very modern however wouldn’t rate it very highly. Biggest complaint was the water kept running hot/warm, couldn’t get it cold for brushing teeth. Our TV wasn’t working and we phoned the front desk about it. Said they’d send someone up. We had to go back to our car sometime later and I mentioned again at the front desk about the TV. They said they had sent someone up who had knocked 5 times and got no reply. I have a bit of deafness, my husband hears everything and the rooms aren’t so large that you are far from the door in so suspect they knocked on another door. Why wouldn’t they phone if they weren’t able to make contact? The other issue is one we had run into when parking underground for a function at City hall when we were exiting late. There is only one exit available in off hours. . We probably spent 5 mins trying to get out on our early morning departure(before 5am) as there is only one exit available and the signage is not very clear. That may not actually be the hotels problem but should be addressed and I did ask at check in if it was clear how to exit in the off hours. They thought it was, but not our experience.

My first time at this property and I'm very happy with my stay. I would definitely return and recommend this property.

Pros:
The rooms are modern and fairly spacious. The bed is nice and supportive. As another reviewer mentioned, there's Illy coffee in the room!
The fitness center is well equipped with stair and climbing machines which is a plus.
The property is within walking distance of numerous restaurants, markets, and food court.
There is also a Sky Train steps from the hotel.
I'm most impressed with the helpful and friendly staff. They always come by nightly inquiring if they can offer turn down service. Very cool.

Cons (Mostly nit picks):
I stayed in the east facing room 2113 and I can hear the Sky Train at night when the open is open. I also wished that there was a step in shower instead of a deep bath tub. I also could've used two more power outlets by the desk.
Finally, there were no decaf Illy pods in the room.

Dear Stephanie, I'm sorry that we missed responding to this in a timely manner. Yes we do accept debit as a form of payment at departure. We require to have a valid photo ID that matches the credit card at check in, to be able to pre-authorize the full room + taxes plus additional $250-$500 depending on the duration of stay. Hope this helps.

According to Expedia there is a $500 ‘breakage deposit’. Is this accurate?? Wow.
Answer from Jonie T
Good evening DoubleBisme, We require a pre-authorization of full room rate, taxes and an additional $100 per night for guests that have a credit card with government issued id. Unfortunately, expedia does not have a field to differentiate cash paying vs credit card as a method of payment. The information online is the maximum a cash paying guest may expect to present as a breakage deposit at check in. Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding.
