We had high hopes for the Cape. The website is beautifully done and the rooms looked bright, clean and airy. The continental breakfast also looked like a delicious affair. The good: it’s a nicely restored heritage building and the rooms are bright . The staff we came across were friendly. For a wedding reception, this is a lovely location. If you book the rooms for overnight stays, you should also be aware that some bedrooms have stairs between the bedroom and the ensuite bathroom. The bad: as a boutique hotel, things fall quite short of the mark. There are no windows that open for fresh air, you can’t change the temperature in the room so for us it was too hot and stuffy and not all windows have blinds so if you need a completely dark room to sleep, it’s a problem. There was also no soap or conditioner in the dispensers in the shower and finding stray hairs in the bath linens and on the furniture was off putting to say the least. The premises are not cleaned on a regular basis- the remains of a bird were on the veranda the day we arrived and the day we left and probably will still be there till the owner reads this. As a minimum, these should all have been in order. The particularly bad: the breakfast should have been faultless what with the CAPE being Culinary Arts Prince Edward yet sadly, we were served watermelon that was soggy and sour tasting and avocado that was so hard you couldn’t cut it! The presentation was instagrammable but the food quality itself should have been better. We actually cut our stay short and didn’t stay the second night since the Cape did not in the end live up to our expectations.
