A real home away from home! We headed out to Quadra Island for our first time, not knowing what to expect -- and couldn't have been happier with the accomodations. Lodgekeeper and kayak guide, who we fondly and ever-so-cleverly deemed "British Beth" made our stay particularly unforgettable. Cooking up amazing homemade breakfasts (loved the pancakes with fresh raspberry puree, including dairy-free versions for a fellow guest), having hot tea and coffee ready for us when we came in from kayaking, and expertly teaching myself (a newbie) the ins and outs of kayaking made for some fantastic memories. While in the marine park, we saw sun stars, seals and pups, bald eagles, kingfishers, sea stars, and sea lions! Coming home to a wood-fired sauna on the lodge's dock was especially heavenly.

Not sure what the previous negative reviewer meant with the "lazy staff" comment -- one look in the full guestbooks will assure you that the lodge is frequented by clam-happy return-guests coming from all over the world. We felt that we were full assisted with our kayak rentals and gear (including complete instruction), and safety was clearly a top priority. Not once did we feel like our best interests weren't at heart. Together, the location, lodge, and staff create a truly magical getaway that should not be missed. Kudos to a wonderful family-run lodge. We will be back!

This Kayaking Sweet Spot of the World is a must for the advanced kayaker! The services of Lannie, Ralph & Albert are top class and the surrounding Discovery Islands, Surges Narrows, Desolation Sound, Toba Inlet, etc., the wildlife, sea mammals, birds, etc. are out of this World spectacular!

This is the absolute, quintessential west coast experience (coming from a west coast gal). We have been a couple of times now and most recently with a large group of friends from Europe. Between us we basically booked out the lodge and had it to ourselves. The lodge itself is fabulous...a gorgeous lodge with out of this world views. The rooms are basic but clean, comfortable and very attractive (and most have views). Incredible value, I would say. You will feel off-the-Grid and come away relaxed and refreshed. Oh, and the kayak tours are fantastic. We had experienced, friendly guides, and I seem to remember fresh baked cookies...so good. We can’t wait to go back!

The other reviews pretty much say it all. I just want to confirm that they are all still accurate and a bit more detail.

On our trip, I found the lodge to be kept cleaner than most of the hotels that we have used.

The staff is great. Friendly and helpful. If you are a well experienced kayaker, then you will be comfortable heading out on your own. The guides will tell you what you need to know about Surge Narrows so that you can play in them or avoid them as you need.

Breakfasts we tasty and hearty.

The one thing you should be aware of is that they are a 40 min drive from the closest grocery store or restaurant so plan to bring your own food. They have 5 small fridge bins to keep your food cool. You only get one. We needed our own cooler for some extra food storage. This was not an issue.

Enjoy your trip.

My wife and I are avid kayakers and have been to the Discovery Islands Lodge twice. A major attraction for us is location, only 10 minutes away from Surge Narrows and a well-placed base for kayaking to campsites in the Discovery Islands. Kayakers of all abilities from novice to expert can find nearby places to paddle and the lodge routinely offers day trips. The kayak fleet is excellent and ranges from very solid Current Design and Seaward kayaks to high performance Romany and NDKs. Another big plus is that Discovery Islands Lodge is well off the beaten path, so that when one sits on the veranda to enjoy the view, it is utterly peaceful. The people working at the lodge are very friendly, professional and interesting. The lodge is very clean and has a well-stocked and highly organized communal kitchen with a powerful propane stove and oven as well as beautiful long communal table perfect for meeting other folks. The breakfasts are consistently nourishing and delicious. Some suggestions: get fresh seafood at Crabby Bob's in Campbell River, get gas in Campbell River or at the Gas N' Go in Quadra Island so you don't worry about running out of gas when leaving the lodge, and take advantage of the limited wifi and cellphone access and relax. Finally, the Discovery Islands Lodge is a family run operation who renovated a fish processing building from the ground up and their love of the place and attention to detail shines throughout.

Very friendly staff who outfitted us with our kayak gear for our 2 day paddle - with just enough info to ensure we were safe, but still feel like adventurers exploring the wilderness. Staying at the lodge at the end of the trip was a perfect bookend - The rooms in the lodge are very clean, the kitchen facility inviting and the breakfast served was hearty and delicious. The outdoor shower is a treat. It is fully off the grid. Getting to the lodge takes you on some amazing roads.

While it takes a bit of effort to get to Discovery Island Lodge the rewards are terrific. A wonderfully friendly staff, fantastic breakfasts, a fully equipped kitchen to prepare dinners and views that are amazing. The dock is perfect to launch a kayak and the opportunities are wonderful from beginner to advanced paddlers. I loved this place and will return!!

Excellent four day/night stay despite heavy winds that prevented us from getting out on the water. Spent the time swimming in Main Lake, hiking to Surge Narrows and other spots with varying distances and difficulty. Breakfasts included were good and nutritious. No real problems preparing our own lunches and dinners in the community kitchen. Amazing views from the lodge. Floating sauna available as we needed. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Good to connect with Ralph and Lannie again. Clean and comfortable rooms...shared bathrooms worked well and loved the outdoor showers. All in all....recommend. Only thing ....... roads into the lodge very hard on our vehicle....rough surfaces and loads of hills. Otherwise....great stay.......

We found this to be a very good balance of getting away from it all in rustic surroundings, but still with some important comforts like a decent bed, hot showers and a well equipped communal kitchen. The open plan lounge/kitchen had comfy couches and a lovely woodburning fire that made it really cozy. Beth and the rest of the staff were exceptional hosts. They were attentive, but not intrusive and made sure we had all we needed. The breakfasts were delicious and imaginative. We did our own kayaking, but guests that did use their guides and equipment were very complimentary.

We stayed at the lodge the second week of August for 4 nights and had a wonderful experience. Great set-up for all types of travelers Remote but not too remote, easy to get to but far enoug away that you settle in and relax. Spectacular setting, wonderful sunsets, idillic kayaking for beginners or for experts, friendly kayak guides and lodge hosts who are welcoming and helpful but not intrusive. So convenient to be able to take a guided kayak tour one day, and then rent kayaks the next. Love the flexibility.

Impeccably clean, simple rooms, wonderful private outdoor showers on the deck, and a sauna on the dock. Our kids, ages 11 and 13 had a great time interacting with others, checking th crab trap, being involved in lodge life, clean up and food prep. No electronics since there was no internet. A nice break.

The hike beside the lodge was a wonderful short trek on a rainy day. Lots of board games and cards to enjoy in the evenings while enjoying a glass of wine or cup of tea. Nice breakfasts prepared by the lodge hosts and shared with all the guests.

Just a perfect spot with a wonderful atmosphere of relaxation. We'll be back!
