The hotel uses the old key cards and mine did not work 9 times out of ten. I was back and forth to the front desk every time I left my room to get help and find that person with the magic touch to get me back in. I was even locked out for an hour in the morning while we waited for the handyman to get on shift and get me back in the rroom. Also, my deadbolt was broken.
The staff was very friendly and dealt with the issue to the best of their ability. I felt bad for them as they probably have to deal with this all the time. The owners really need to buck up and replace this worn out card lock system.
Then the next morning the disappointment: On Tuesdays there is no breakfast here, as the in-house pub was also closed, we were told. For this I had another brown paper bag with "breakfast-to-go". In the nearby, large supermarket, we stocked up before continuing.
The room we had was very specious and well set out. However, as alluded to by other reviewer's comments, the room fittings are dated and the bedding could be better. Certainly a replacement of the mattresses would go a long way as they felt well past their useful age.
Otherwise the property is well-located in good proximity to both town center and short drive to the ferry terminal. So all-in-all, solid option if you're only in Port Hardy for a brief stop to catch the ferry but I wouldn't exactly recommend for a destination vacation.

The carpets are a biohazard in that they probably haven't been cleaned since installation; stained, smelly and outright gross.
The tiny kitchenette's backsplash has food splashes from the 80's.
The bathroom sink is constantly clogged and as a party of 4, we had 2 bath towels provided and when I asked for 2 more, it seemed to be questioned.
The room key cards work 1 out of every 7 attempts.
The hotel room doors have no soft close, so every time a door on the floor closes, it slams and vibrates the entire floor.
There is no AC, which is fine, but with a single window in the room, the dank carpet and stuffiness in the room has no way of escaping.
The windows in the hallways remain open, which lets in a moth colony attracted to the lights nightly and they inevitably end up in your room.
The room layout was awful - the table had 2 chairs and room for only 2 - useless for a party of 4.
Avoid at all costs.

The receptionist on check in was only what I can describe as rude and hostile from the moment we approached the desk. Obviously customers were far too much trouble for her. She demanded (not asked for, demanded) the credit card I had used to make the booking which I handed over but with retrospect we should have just left then because her hostility only escalated. Finally she thrust a slip of paper at us to tick boxes on if we were 'interested in breakfast'. The choices included a box of juice and a piece of fruit.
I stopped her at this point and said we had an inclusion of a full breakfast in our booking which she had just taken payment for, she asked for proof of this which I provided and the response was 'tough, that's what's on offer, take it or leave it, it's all because of Covid'. I asked for a refund on the cost at which point she got up and walked away and did not return, at one level I was glad to see the back of her but what dreadful service.
After a few minutes a second receptionist appeared who was far more helpful and pleasant and she undertook to sort out the booking but again the 'Covid excuse' was rolled out about breakfast. (Do they know the hotel next door has its restaurant open from 06.30-21.00 every day and do they take their own customers for fools on the back of that?)
The room had clean beds and hot water and we were prepared to settle for that, the floor was filthy, - see pic of the carpet. Whatever about being run down, there is no excuse for that level of filth, it was not possible to walk to the bathroom with bare feet.
We slept reasonably well and checked out early the next morning at which point I had to deal with the original receptionist again who was just as rude and just as hostile. The cost of the room had been reduced and when I required she print out the invoice as I wanted proof of that all I can say is that if looks could kill, I would have died in utter agony.
There are NO circumstances under which I would return to this dump again.
It went down from there. The carpet in the room had marks all over it, the bath had black marks in it and to crown it all a beetle ran across the floor. When we arrived we were given a piece of paper to list our breakfast requirements and was told to collect the orders in the morning but there was no public space to sit on. In the morning only 1 breakfast had been made up, there were 2 of us, and this time a different receptionist said that as the breakfast had all been prepared she could not do anything - after a few words some food was found.
But that doesnt excuse the following:
After moving into our room, we had to go downstairs and ask for towels, hand soap, toiletpaper cause none were in the room.
The room clearly wasnt vacuumed and had notes and trash of the previous guests in it.
Every night the bathroom sink filled with black water that wouldnt drain. When it finally did it left a residue of crumbs and dirt in it.
No housekeeping at all, even with sign on the door. New TP or towels only on verbal request.
Ive stayed in Hostels that charged a tenth of the price and had better service.
The breakfast is a joke. Yes, the pandemic makes things tricky, but to charge full price and offer nothing but muffins and coffee is more than dissapointing, especially cause we inquired over the telephone and were promised a full continental breakfast selection.
But the staff is friendly enough, the location is quiet and just a 5 minute walk out of town (in which almost everything is shut as of late June 2020). Beds are comfortable. Most furniture is damaged/broken.
Would not recommend.
