My best friend and I visited Duval Point Lodge the week of Aug 8th for our annual "Sons in law" fishing trip. We met Captain Dave at the public dock in Port Hardy Monday morning - loaded an enormous amount of stuff into his boat and headed out to the lodge. From this point on we found Mr. Beckman to be a very attentive host. He made an extra effort to make sure that we had everything we needed and more during our stay. This place is great with a beautiful location nicely removed from civilization but still close enough that you have reasonable access to Port Hardy if needed. The cabins exceeded expectation with plenty of room for the two men that we put in each. They are well kept, clean and appeared to be quite new overall. With a bunk bed in each cabin a 3rd person could easily be added if you wanted to. Every evening Captain Dave dressed out, vacuum sealed and froze our catch. One of the first evenings he came up to our cabin and set up some rigs of his favorite lures while listening to our bad jokes and general BS. We used those lures extensively and had exceptional success using them. Ultimately we went home with a nice bunch of fish, some great new fish stories and a new friend - many thanks Dave!…
We had a great time at Duval Point Lodge. Dave has recently upgraded the docks, brand new steel docks, very stable and easy to tie up. The lodges all are in great shape, had everything we needed for our trip. You CPAP folks, bring an extension cord! We've already booked for next year, could not be closer to the fish if you slept on your boat. Chelsey's first class during booking, always responsive. Ian is always attentive to our needs and Dave taught us some new tricks on where to fish, how to fish and even fish cleaning advice. First class and we'll be coming back.
It has taken me a long time to write this review. The trip was a disappointment due mainly to the overall condition of the facility. We booked a bring you own boat trip in early August 2021. Arrived at the lodge and no one was there. Attempted to tie up to a dock that was covered with debris, falling apart and had broken cleats And was very difficult to tie up our boat safely. The owner arrived shortly and was initially quite hostile thinking we were thieves as he had forgotten we were coming that day. No fuel for generator so we ended up with a small Honda that ran sporadically. Cabin was clean and comfortable and was one of the only things in good condition. Grounds of the lodge are a garbage dump and the pictures showing many features on the website when we booked were no longer there having washed up on the beach in a stories of storms or sunk and broken up. The lodge “boats’ were apparently good at one time but now look seriously unsafe and have not been maintained. The gear we saw (used our own) was in very poor condition. Fishing was OK. Fish processing was not really there and we ended up with some very poor bags that broke quickly so I re-packed all the fish with my own vacuum packer. Would not recommend this place and will not be back. Would suspect the lodge will be out of business soon.…
With such a beautiful location it is a shame Duval Point Lodge has been allowed to get so run down. The 16’ aluminum boats are not sea worthy and there is little to no safety equipment with them. No working bilge pump, one broken paddle, no navigation lights, throw rope or really any safety items. The fishing gear that’s included with the rental is just junk. On land it’s not much better. The main lodge is in decent shape but the outbuildings are in various states of disrepair and the grounds in general look like a garbage dump. The owner has a million excuses but in the end it’s just a good example of why some people should not own a business. All in all, it was the most disappointing experience we’ve ever had at a lodge.
We visited Port Hardy after the busy summer season. Dave, the lodge owner, picked us up at the Government Dock. About 20 minutes boat ride later, we arrived this beautiful remote place tucked behind the Duval Island for the first time. We stayed at the 3 bedroom chalet. The kitchen is well stocked with necessities; rooms are clean and comfortable; hot water is always available during our stay. The wether was not cooperating this time, strong wind, rain and cold, but the owner tried his best to make sure our stay is as comfortable as possible. I really enjoyed the wood burning stove which made the place cozy and warm. I had sat many hours on the recliner reading books by the burning stove and fallen asleep like a baby. I wasn’t expecting fishing to be good given the timing and bad weather. Salmon has returned to rivers, halibut long left for deeper seas, but Dave still took us out in his boat to fish his secret spots. We caught a lot of fish, encountered whales playing, watched various wildlife and beautiful scenery. Returned to Dock, Dave packed the fish up nicely using his commercial grade vacuum packer for our trip home. The lodge is not an all inclusive operation, it offer many options. It worked for me, especially spending the quality time with the family in a remote west-coast setting.…
Well, after several good years of fishing in this lodge, this is our last year. There has been a steady decline year over year of the maintenance of the equipment, and delivery of what is advertised. Our last experience was the end of it. We received an email stating "pick up at 10 am at the seaward dock by water taxi". We arrive 15 minutes early, park, unload. No water taxi. Call the lodge at 10 am - lodge says "be there in 15 minutes". 25 minutes pass, call again, "can't get there due to fog". (The fog had lifted by that point - it was an early fog each day)". 11 am, lodge owner picks us up and telling us the generator was dead - $25,000 to fix it. We think "great, no electricity in the lodges". Owner hooks up a small generator so we can have a fridge and a lamp. Fishing was slow, but it seemed to be slow everywhere. Wind was picking up in the evening, so we think to power west, and troll back with the waves. Motor starts smoking as soon as we take off, so back to lodge we go. Turns out was a bent fuel tank nozzle. We didn't go far after that, and the motor was sort of bogging out at power, so not a good idea. (Guys in the other lodge crossed the channel - their motor crapped out in the wind on the way back - they limped and sputtered their way back). So, we stayed close. Finally catch a nice one, but it falls through the hole in the net. The boat was taking on a little water through a drain plug, but we hoped the lodge owner would notice it and sump out the boat, but nope. And i forgot to tell him, but when you do, you lose your boat for an hour "while he gets to it". Two days pass, and two diesel jerry cans come up the doc. Then the generator starts making noise. He opens our cabin door, flicks on the lights almost smugly, and closes the door. We made a comment about it, and he has some excuse and just says "it is what it is". Unless there are massive upgrades in the fishing equipment (boats/motors/downriggers), we feel it isn't safe to be anywhere on the water with the equipment as it is. There is little cell coverage, and if the wind picks up and you have a motor issue, you could be in trouble.…
Our family of four, being myself, husband and two boys(8 and 5) spent the past 5 days at Duval point Lodge. The lodge was clean, comfortable and welcoming. Dave, Lisa and their entire family treated us with great hospitality, it was clear they wanted us to have the best experience possible. The boat was great and we were given great fishing advice. The location is perfect and right on the ocean. We saw whales daily and received a dolphin show within 10 feet of our boat that will create a memory of a lifetime for us all. The best part of the trip was when we were loading up our van as we were leaving and our 8 year old son asked if we could come back next year for his birthday. We will definitely be back next year and can't wait to return!
If you want to Relax, this is the place! If you want to catch Fish, this is the place! If you want to start fishing within 300 yards of the dock, this is the place! We landed several species of Salmon within sight of the lodge including Chinook, Pinks, and Coho, not to mention all the other typse of fish there. It is obvious that this was a great spot to fish as many locals make there every day. Without doubt the best fishing lodge I've ever been to. Simple, and clean. The owners Dave and Lisa are wonderful people, not only unique and genuine, but down to earth. They do everything they can to improve your experience. It is obvious they care about every persons experience at their lodge. Thank you for all the great advice about where to fish and what to use when self guiding. They made us feel and treated us like old friends. Captain Eric, simply outstanding! Thank you as well for not only great advice and great guided fishing experience, but also showing us some of the sights and sharing with us. The whole experience was exactly what a fishing lodge should be.......FISHING FISHING FISHING.…
You wont find a more authentic fishing lodge on the west coast period. Dave and Lisa are as real as it gets. They shared their knowledge of things and made us feel very welcome. The fishing is top notch and right off the dock
Vancouver Island is a paradise when it comes to the outdoors - the ocean, forest, parks, fishing, kayaking, camping, mountains, wildlife and the list goes on. Duval Point Lodge is in the middle of all that and is accessible only by boat. A great fishing lodge where you get to rough it a little by bringing your own food and fishing unguided should you choose. The fishing grounds are almost literally a stone throw from your lodge with some of the best salmon, halibut and rockfish fishing in the world. Owner Dave Beckman will go out of his way to make you feel right at home. The price is very affordable for the average income person and well worth it. A very tranquil place in the great outdoors. I was very blessed to catch my biggest halibut, biggest lingcod and first yellow-eye at this location. Check it out and see for yourself.…
