it was the most glorious life affirming few days with friends, an atmosphere that made you feel inspired to hike and explore but equally to be tranquil and quiet. the food was out of this world delicious and the lodge in inviting and thoughtfully equipped with everyone one could imagine. The staff was delightful and Scott is the most passionate and insightful guide and owner I have ever met. thank you!

I celebrated my 50th birthday with a group of 8 last week and I'm already planning my next visit. I had high hopes and everything exceeded expectations. Our host (Scott) took us hiking, kayaking, tidepooling and on a boat trip around Barkley Sound. Not only is he a great guy but, as a marine scientist, he has encyclopedic knowledge of local flora and fauna. The nuggets of wisdom that he shared made the trip extra fun. The staff was incredibly fun and friendly. The food was simply terrific and rivaled the very best restaurants in my home town (Victoria). Finally, the lodge itself was terrific. You couldn't ask for a better setting, with access to a private beach/bay right on Barkley Sound. There's a wonderful little hilltop for watching sunsets. Jump in the hot tub to relax at the end of the day. Beds are very comfortable and finishings are modern. Our visit was perfect and I have no doubt you'll feel the same.

Outer Shores is simply perfect. While I’ve had the pleasure of traveling to many gorgeous lodges and resorts with incredible locations, great food, and warm hospitality, Outer Shores truly goes above and beyond in every category - it’s a truly unique and special place. The lodge itself occupies one of the most stunning and serene locations on the Pacific Coast - it’s both tucked in the forest and perched over the ocean at the same time, and the rocky coastline rich with marine life is literally at your doorstep. Everyone enjoyed exploring the tidepools every morning, especially the “basketball hoop”, and whether it was in the lodge’s boat or kayaks, getting out on the water and exploring was a key part of every day. We even had a pod of orcas hugging the water’s edge at sunset one night. The food program is exquisite, with Jeanne (a culinary celebrity - be sure to chat with her and leaf through the many cookbooks she’s authored) and Hugo putting out local, seasonal, creative, and beautifully flavoured meals every day. There’s plenty of opportunity for snacking too, with treats out in a little nook, and a happy hour spot every evening. It’s truly the people that make Outer Shores magic - besides Jeanne and Hugo in the kitchen, Jess keeps the place meticulous (and is a talented artist) and Jenn is the loveliest hostess, making sure everything is tailored to perfection for the lodge guests (and she makes excellent Aperol Spritzes). And Scott, the lodge co-owner and incredible guide, is truly awesome. With a PhD and long career in marine ecology, there’s nothing he doesn’t know about the flora and fauna in the area. He caters every activity to ensure the guests are getting maximum enjoyment, and is so inclusive - our group was half adventure-driven activity-seekers and half older guests who had a more relaxed pace, and everybody felt included, cared for, and getting exactly what they came for. And nowhere will you get as much science as part of a luxury lodge experience - as a fellow biologist, I lapped up every bit of marine ecosystem fact that I could get - it as a blast learning from Scott. Be sure to time your visit to permit a trip to Kiixin or see if one of the Huu-ay-aht Knowledge Keepers is able to visit the lodge for a personal storytelling session - we were lucky to have an evening with Keats that was pure magic. So to sum it up, 11/10, A+++, six stars. We can’t wait to return!

Truly an amazing few days! From the minute we arrived at the seaplane dock where Scott was waiting for us to our final goodbyes at the same dock, our stay was perfect. The lodge itself is large and comfortable with plenty of seating and stunning views. There are binoculars on the fireplace for guests to use and fascinating books scattered around on subjects from marine biology to local history. The beds are divine...probably the most comfortable I have ever experienced outside of my own home. The food! I could write a whole book about the glorious food lovingly prepared by Jeanne and Hugo. The wine choices by Jen were always perfect accompaniments to the menu. Every meal was a treat for the senses and in between meals, tasty snacks and treats would appear as if by magic. The Outer Shores Lodge power balls were a particular favourite. Scott was a perfect host. Every day he would help us plan our activities for the day and then execute those plans. There is so much to do! Hiking, tide-pooling, zodiac rides along the shore looking for bears, sea lions, eagles, etc. No two days were alike and activities were as strenuous or easy as each member of our group preferred. A highlight for me was an evening spent with Keats, a Knowledge Keeper from the Huu-ay-aht First Nation. His story telling, drumming and singing touched us all deeply. Each day ended with us climbing up the bluff next to the lodge and watching the glorious sunset. So beautiful! One caution for seniors...you must be sufficiently fit to clamber in an out of a float plane if that is your mode of transportation, hop into and out of a zodiac and walk short distances on hilly, uneven terrain. I certainly plan on keeping myself in as good shape as possible in order to return to this incredible place again.

If I could give Outer Shores 10 stars I would. Every aspect of our stay was amazing — the location, accommodations, food (!!), excursions, and staff were all incredible. Scott and Russ are so knowledgable about the area and environment, so it was very special to explore the island while learning from their expertise (hiking, kayaking, whale watching, tide pool walks ... these are just some of the activities you can enjoy while at the lodge). Can't wait to return!

Outer Shores Lodge is simply exceptional. What we loved: morning boat runs to watch bears turning over rocks and breakfasting on seafood up very close. Walks as long or short as you like to nearby beaches and coves. Zipping through the magnificent Deer Group islands watching the seals, otters, birds and other creatures. Toasting marshmallows around the fire pit on the edge of the bay in front of the lodge. Fascinating hands on biology sessions with resident Marine Biologist and host Scott. Watching sunsets up on the headland above the lodge with a mum and cub passing through one evening. Wonderful meals freshly prepared, beautifully presented and made with local ingredients. Great selection of complimentary wines and boutique beers. The lodge itself is lovely and very comfortably furnished, comfy beds, room to spread out. The visit to Huu-ay-aht First Nations was fascinating. Scott and his team did everything to ensure our stay was the best possible and there was always something to make the most of our time there which was simply not long enough so we will be back. The addition of the lovely sailboat Passing Cloud next season will be yet another drawcard. Thank you to all for the best holiday experience.

We just had the absolute best experience at Outer Shores Lodge. Russ, Scott and the whole team were the very best hosts and thought of every detail to make our experience so memorable! We booked the entire lodge for our friends and family for the weekend to celebrate our wedding and wow, we are so grateful we did. We will be remembering these memories for the rest of our lives and look forward to our next visit! The wildlife was phenomenal (bears, orcas and eagles all from the lodge), the lodge was beautiful, renovated, clean and very comfortable, the food was exquisite, and the service from the whole team was above all else! Thank you Outer Shores!

What a fabulous week! Our family needed some time out of our house and off our own island home to recharge, and wow did Outer Shores Lodge deliver a magical time! Some highlights: -Such a fabulous host and staff! Scott and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the area and just wonderful people who warmly welcomed and expertly guided us. -The food! The fabulous, creative, and inventive food was worth the trip just in itself. The chef spontaneously incorporated rhubarb that a sweet neighbor left on my doorstep into the meal. -Wildlife viewing boat trips! We saw bears, seabirds, harbor seals, and beautiful coastal vistas from the boat. Zipping across the water was exhilarating - eliciting lots of whooping and cheering from the kids. And the sweet singing buoy, who we visited up close and could hear at night, became part of our bedtime routine. -Hikes through secret forest paths, seaweed-strewn beaches, and up steep coastal staircases! We couldnʻt resist experiencing a bit of the West Coast Trail, and what a thrill to be shushed as we returned to the meadow because there was a big bear snacking. The beaches are surreal, just so, so beautiful. -Science! We all enjoyed being part of a bioblitz at the intertidal and in the bog, and a tour of the Bamfield Marine Science Lab. We examined and identified dozens of new-to-us species of seaweed, echinoderms, molluscs, and plants. As the tides receded each day, we put on our rain boots and waterproof layers, and splashed through the intertidal to uncover the next marvel. -Learning local history from an indigenous elder! The tour of the Huu-Ay-Aht Kiixin village was another highlight of our week. -Kubota tours! Scott ferried our 2 year-old around, with the garbage and recycling run being a particularly huge hit! -Cozy lodge, with a not-to-be-missed lookout point for a sunset glass of wine. -Sweet fishing town, with wonderful people! During one walk, we met a lodge neighbor tending to his garden. We talked plants, and he ended up leaving some foraged rhubarb at our cabin because I said it was one of the things I missed living in the tropics. So sweet! -For one of our party, the crazy cold swimming was a donʻt miss feature. (For the saner amongst us, not so much. We preferred the warm tea and cookies that were always available at the lodge.) -Interesting guests! We enjoyed conversations over meals and during excursions with the other guests. -Did we mention the food?!?

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Outer Shores. We did private boat rides and hikes with a guide. Food was exceptional. Chef was amazing. Staff was always willing to help and provide guided activities. Our seaplane got cancelled but Scott was able to make alternative transportation to get us to YVR. Highly recommended.
