The Abode is a 250 year old hotel otherwise known as the Royal Clarence Hotel after the Duchess of Clarence who stayed in the 1800s. Horatio Nelson dined here. Franz Liszt played here (see blue plaque on the wall near the entrance). The location is directly on Cathedral Green opposite the splendid edifice of Exeter Cathedral (of St Peter's). The...

We stayed here for one night and were pleasantly surprised. We had a small double on the 3rd floor which was cosy and clean with a modern feel. The view of the cathedral from the room was stunning. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially Stephanie, dropping off bags was easy and car parking is available in a multi-storey...

We booked the Autumn Treat package for a Friday night when our daughter was invited to a sleepover party in Exeter - we thought we'd have a sleepover, too... Our package included a lovely two course dinner, which was really delicious. We could have upgraded to the a la carte menu but we were really happy with the offer menu,...

This hotel is located in the city centre. The room was beautifully decorated. Opted for room service and enjoyed the hospitality as well as the food. I just wasn't too keen on the stairs, could have done with a lift with my luggage though they did offer to help. WiFi connectivity was next to none which was rather disappointing.. However...

Brilliant room with full view of the Cathedral. Very comfortable and beautifully decorated. Delicious dinner in the Michael Caines' Restaurant. Breakfast was very second rate. Under-cooked tomato amd mushroom. Raw black pudding. Delicious sausage and bacon. Lovely staff and in a beautiful setting.

I have stayed many times at Abode Exeter and it is always perfect. Its proximity to the Cathedral makes the setting superb and the room is very comfortable. Not so keen on the stairs however! Well done

Dark and Expensive Having just arrived in Exeter on a lovely sunny day we walked to the Cathedral and spotted tables and chairs outside the hotel so decided to stop and have a drink there. When my husband went inside he was told that drinks were not allowed outside unless we were having a meal. We didn’t really want to...

this hotel was well situated in the centre of the city, the staff were very caring and welcoming. My room although small was ideal for a lone traveller, I would recommend the restaurant the food being top quality. Only niggle charging £2.50 for three pieces of bread is over priced especially as an extra to my special offer of dinner...

Stayed for weekend of great west run. No car parking nearby so have to walk with bags a couple of hundred yards. Apparently can drop off bags normally but car park still a fair walk away. Nice setting by Cathedral. We stayed in a "desirable" room. Looks nice on the website with bath in the room. In reality it is...

We were attending a black tie dinner held inside the Cathedral and given this hotel is so close we treated ourselves to an overnight stay. I have probably been generous with a three star rating but somewhere there is a very nice hotel here amongst a myriad of small frustrations that we experienced. Firstly the room (very small) had a...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking to the future of The Royal Clarence, we have every intention to rebuild the hotel with enormous sympathy.. The 18th-century hotel, said to be one of the oldest in England, was gutted when a blaze spread from an adjacent building on Friday morning. The fire wrecked the inside of the landmark building and left the frontage on the brink of collapse. ... more   less
